August 18, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKToday we come upon Jeremiah, the prophet at the King’s court, having a real bad day.  He refused to butter up the king by just telling the king what he and the people wanted to hear.  Because Jeremiah stood for the truth, he was berated, mocked and thrown into a cistern where he would have died if the King had not saved his life.  The persecution which Jeremiah experienced was something that afflicted all the prophets due to their determination to stand up for God's word, to stand for what was right and good and true, no matter what others would say about them or do to them.   Our Gospel is clear and grounded in reality.  The greatest challenge, in our standing for what is right with God, may be within our family structure.   It may result in being rejected by your own. Yet we have to meet the challenges of life, and we have to overcome all the barriers to the truth that society and we ourselves put in our way.  Being faithful to the Lord is most important.

2020 Mass Intention Book is open. Please contact the Parish Office for the availability and scheduling of intentions for Masses in the Parish for the approaching year.  Because of the demand for Mass intentions, please be considerate of others who also want to make their intentions.  Also, all “living” intentions will be sent to retired priests to be fulfilled in a timely period.

Our Parish Family Mass…is also called Missa pro populo, “Mass for the People.”  It refers to the requirement of all pastors to celebrate a Mass, on each Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation, for the intentions and welfare of the people of the parish.  This is aside from any individual intention, living or deceased.

A note from Sister Jo Ann McPolin, staff member of St. John the Beloved Parish, on her retirement:

Who are the servants of the Lord, but minstrels who raise the hearts of others to spiritual joy!  - Francis of Assisi

For the past 30 years it has been a privilege to be part of the Franciscan education ministry at St. John the Beloved School.  As teacher, mentor, coordinator and spiritual support, I strove to incarnate the peace, the joy and the love of God to all who came into my life.  During this time the parents, students, dedicated colleagues and parishioners of St. John’s have truly become part of the “fabric of my life” – touching my heart with God’s grace and goodness, caring presence and loving ways beyond measure.  Your faith-filled affirmation of Catholic education and the Sisters of St. Francis has been a source of inspiration to me in what it means to live and be Christ for others.  What blessed memories I shall carry with me into the future!   In recent weeks I have prayerfully discerned with my religious congregation my retirement from St. John the Beloved School.  As I share the news, my heart overflows with gratitude for all that we have shared as sisters and brothers in living our Christian faith.  In the spirit of Francis I pray:  May the Lord bless you.  May He let his face shine upon you and give you peace always.

—Sr. Jo Ann McPolin, OSF

Surely we will miss Sister JoAnn's presence in our school after so many years of loving ministry.  Sister is the last Franciscan Sister to serve in our parish school.  The Franciscan Sisters of Philadelphia founded and staffed our parish school for 61 years.  We acknowledge their tireless dedication in Catholic education.  For all they did and continue to do...we thank them.  God Bless!

INSPIRE

God bless our newly Baptized!

Sophie Elle Lennon Rowan Knox Oleksy Paxton Rossi Ruth

May our little ones who were baptized be blessed by our parishioners' prayers and good works.  May they continue to grow in their love for God.

PRAYER BEFORE CONFESSION O most merciful God! Prostrate at your feet, I implore your forgiveness. I sincerely desire to leave all my evil ways and to confess my sins with all sincerity to you and to your priest. I am a sinner, have mercy on me, O Lord. Give me a lively faith and a firm hope in the Passion of my Redeemer. Give me, for your mercy´s sake a sorrow for having offended so good a God. Mary, my mother, refuge of sinners, pray for me that I may make a good confession. Amen.

Marriage Moments: Natural or national disasters can bring out the best in humanity as we rally to help those in need. A marriage crisis can also prompt a couple to sacrifice for each other or honestly deal with a recurring problem.  Don't wait for a disaster, however, to test your love. Prevention is better. Parenting Pointers:Parental discipline (or even self-discipline) is often unwelcome. Talk with your child about the pros and cons of not always taking the easy, pleasant solution to a problem. Share a time when you had to discipline yourself. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

"I have come to set the earth on fire,” Do you want to carry the fire of the Lord to his people as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Call Fr. Norm Carroll 302-573-3113 [email protected].

That with every “Our Father” we will be mindful of His generous goodness and ask that Holy Spirit be given to all those discerning their vocation in Christ, We pray to the Lord. Amen

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION INVITATION (RCIA) FOR CHILDRENThe RCIA is the opportunity for children over the age of 10 who have not been baptized or have been baptized but not received their sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion to come and learn and share about our religion. The RCIA classes are on Tuesday evening from 6:30-7:30pm and are designed to form and educate younger

children on the Catholic religion and to holistically develop these children in their faith. Interested families are asked to contact the Office of Religious Education at 302-994-7757 at their earliest convenience and the classes begin on Sept. 10 and we look forward to welcoming your family to our community.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK . . . Our baptismal rite instructs the parents and godparents of the newly baptized children, "May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts." Faith has often been associated with fire. While fire can be useful and welcomed as a source of light and warmth, it can also be devastating and destructive. The Gospel is very much like this. On the one hand, Jesus speaks of healing, liberty, mercy, and forgiveness. On the other, he challenges the secular mindset and ideology, risks opposition, and pushes people out of their comfort zones. We are more attracted to things that make us feel better about ourselves. Equipped with the flame of faith, are we willing to see the bigger picture and risk popularity and self-preservation in favor of the kingdom of God?

August 18, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL

National Senior Citizens Day recognizes contributions senior citizens make in communities across the United States. It is annually observed on August 21, 2019.

A Senior's Prayer Good and gracious God, I thank you for the gift of life. You have given me so many good things over its course:health of mind and body, friends and family, strengths and weaknesses, sorrows and joys. You have ordained that seasons change and time passes.Help me to surrender graciously to the changing circumstances of my life. Help me to accept my weaknesses, and to see them as opportunities for others to show the love of Jesus.Make me strong in Your spirit, that I may love You all the days of my life. Amen.

The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart?

The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! "There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV. In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.

Prayer: Let the Shooting End God, our hearts are broken with pain at the senseless deaths caused by gun violence. Families mourn, children live in fear, and some in our nation respond by arming themselves with more guns with greater capacity to end life. Our disconnection and alienation has caused some to turn to guns for protection and safety. We ask that you touch our hearts with your love, heal our brokenness, and turn us away from violence toward peace. Help us to transform our own hearts and to seek peaceful ways of resolving our differences. Let our hands reach out and connect with those who feel alone, those who live in fear, and those suffering from mental illness. Let our voices be raised asking our legislators to enact gun laws to protect all in our society, especially those most vulnerable. Let our pens write messages demanding change while also scripting words of hope and transformation.
