Jesus teaches us in today’s parable to pray in perseverance for our needs (Lk 18:1). Else-where in Scripture, Jesus reveals more about how to pray always with perse-verance and power:• Pray by listening to

God (Lk 10:38-42).• Pray in a love-relation-

ship with “Abba” (Mt 6:9; Gal 4:6).

• Pray with faith. Jesus is always looking for faith (Lk 18:8).

• Pray without ever los-ing heart, that is, not growing weary and not going through the motions of prayer (Lk 18:1).

• Pray the words of Scripture (2 Tm 3:16). Praying the Word of God has powerful force (Jn 10:35).

• “Pray in the Spirit” (Eph 6:18) using the spiritual gift of tongues. The Holy Spirit direct-ly intercedes through us in tongues and helps us in our weakness (Rm 8:26).

• Pray without ceasing (1 Thes 5:17).Observe a young couple

in love. They spend day after day in each other’s presence without grow-ing weary of each other. Therefore, ask Jesus to give you a new heart (Ez 36:26) and open it to re-ceive the love He is pour-ing out through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5). Then your prayer will grow in love instead of growing weary.

Modlitwy do Maryi są modlit-wami ostateczności. Niema żadnej takiej mod-litwy w całej liturgii,której najnędzniejszy zgrzeszników nie mógłbywypowiedzieć w całejprawdzie. W całymmechanizmie zbawienia „Zdrowaś Maryjo” toostatni ratunek, które-go nie można zatracić.Modlitwa ta odmawi-ana sercem wzbudza pragnienie, by śpiewać,nie tylko głosem, alecałym życiem, miłośćdo Dziewicy Maryi”. Nie wszyscy jed-nak – nawet wśród ka-tolików–wierząwmoci skuteczność modlitwy.Powód?W naszej epoceczłowiek bywa częstorozczarowany braki-em natychmiastowych efektów. Jeszcze innitwierdzą, że wszystko,co nas spotyka, jest jużzapisane w gwiazdach i nie unikniemy przecieżswojego przeznacze-nia. Zatem po co więcwytrwale modlić się inie ustawać? To ważnepytanie. Być może,szukając odpowiedzina nie, odnajdziemy na nowosenssłów,mechan-icznie powtarzanych dotąd rano i wieczorem.Pamiętajmy, by modlićsię. Pomimo piętrzącychsiętrudności,któresąpo-dobne do wojsk silnego przeciwnika. Many prison inmates find their sentence is atime for a very deeply personal soul searching. As a result, some people discover God and, hid-den from public gaze, try to turn around their lives. Unexpectedly, prison be-comes a place where they find both wholeness andholiness.

Within the prison en-vironment, inmates daily face challenges to their sense of self, their fami-lies, their faith and their futures. Many also en-counter further stressors in the form of radicali-sation, drug abuse, self-harm and other negative agendas. These form part of their daily struggle to “make good” in the light of their growing religious awareness and under-standing.

Faith Inside: a guide forCatholics inprison isthe first-ever catecheti-cal resource uniquely tailored to the needs of Catholics inUKprisons.It is a direct response to a need expressed by chap-lains, current and former inmates. Addressed to people with widely vary-ing personal stories and motivation, Faith Inside

is written by Fr Eddie McGhee, a serving prison chaplain in Scotland.

In order to create Faith Inside:aguideforCatho-lics in prison, Redemptor-istPublications,theCath-olicBishops’Conferenceof England and Wales and the Bishops Conferenceof Scotland have worked closely with prison chap-lains, serving and former inmates.

The book begins with the participant’s arrest and looks towards the possibility of release and rehabilitation, tak-ing the inmate on a jour-ney through fundamental Christian beliefs, prayer,the sacraments, coping with death and bereave-ment, and preparation for release.

The resource consists of a book for each pris-oner, which they can personalise and keep. There is also a leader’s book which the chaplain may adapt for use in in-dividual or group situa-tions. Importantly, Faith Inside is created to allow for periodic lockdowns in which participants might beconfinedtotheircells.
