Today’s scripture accounts reveal a little bit to us about first encounters that set in motion some very important scriptural lives. Isaiah has a momen- tous experience of God enthroned while the seraphim chant “Holy, holy, holy!” (Isaiah 6:3). Paul hints at his conversion and call to be an apostle when he refers to himself as one “born abnormally” (1 Corinthians 15:8), which is to say he is the only apostle—the “least,” he calls himself—who did not know Jesus during his earthly ministry. We hear Luke’s version of the first impression the disciples had of Jesus, when they learn an important lesson about being a follower of Jesus: you can labor all you want, but if you do not allow the Lord into your work, it will be in vain. When he enters, get ready to be amazed. FINAL IMPRESSIONS John, the only other evangelist to recount the story of the miraculous catch of fish, places the story after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the beginning of his ministry as Luke does. Unlike Matthew and Mark, wherein the dis- ciples follow Jesus upon his call, Luke seemed to know that his listeners would comprehend the call to discipleship better if it followed a miraculous sign (and Peter’s acknowledgment of his sinfulness echoes Isaiah’s description of his unclean lips). But whether it’s Luke describing the beginning of the disciples following Jesus in mission or John’s depiction of the risen Christ preparing his followers for the mission following his return to the Father, the point is the same, and remains the same for us today. Paul expresses it best. It does not matter who preaches the gospel, or where or when, but only that it is, through the grace of God in us, preached and believed. February 7, 2016 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeWe talk about making a good first impres-

sion or falling in love at first sight. Today’s scripture accounts reveal a little bit to us about first encounters that set in motion some very important scriptural lives. Isaiah has a momen-tous experience of God enthroned while the seraphim chant “Holy, holy, holy!” (Isaiah 6:3).

FINAL IMPRESSIONSJohn, the only other evangelist to recount the story of the

miraculous catch of fish, places the story after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the beginning of his ministry as Luke does. Unlike Matthew and Mark, wherein the dis-ciples follow Jesus upon his call, Luke seemed to know that his listeners would comprehend the call to discipleship better if it followed a miraculous sign (and Peter’s acknowledgment of his sinfulness echoes Isaiah’s description of his unclean lips).

Today’s Readings: Is 6:1–2a, 3–8; Ps 138:1–5, 7–8; 1 Cor 15:1–11 [3–8]; Lk 5:1–11

Reflexiones apollando los candidatos de la confirmación ¿Cómo puedo yo, como un iniciado plenamente miembro de esta comunidad parroquial, ser signo y símbolo para generar y encarnar el fuego de Pentecostés en toda esta comunidad de fe?

Did you happen to be at the 5 p.m. Mass or the 10 A.M. Mass about two week ago and see a large group of our youth sitting together at Mass? The National Evangeliza-tion Team-a team comprised of 12 young adults from different parts of our country-came to our parish to provide the one-day retreats for our youth. Available through our Archdiocese, the team led 77 high-school youth on retreat Saturday Jan. 16 and 71 Junior-high youth Sunday, Jan. 24. The retreat’s theme, “Why Catholic,” left the retreatants very Spirit-filled as they seemed to recharge their faith. With the help of many parents and parishioners without children in the program, we had a very successful, productive and fulfillling time.
