This Sunday, May 5th, at the 10:30am Mass, I will be privileged to confirm the following adults who have completed their period of instruction and formation and have been called by Archbishop Myers to continuing conversion:

Alexander Bartke, Jacqueline Burgos, Carlos Nuñez, Lina Villada.

Also at this Mass, receiving First Communion will be Ryan Baxter.

Adults who are interested in preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, and Penance are encouraged to make their intentions known at this time. A monthly session will be held from May through August, and weekly sessions will begin at the end of September. Now is the time to begin the conversation. Contact me or Deacon Jim for our English program and Fr. Manuel for our Spanish program.

    Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings The question of conditions for membership was one of the most serious disputes that raged in the first years of the Church. Since the Jesus movement was originally an internal Jewish renewal, the Jewish Christians continued to observe the religious practices of their former faith, and they expected the same of Gentile converts. However, Paul allowed his Gentile converts to refrain from Jewish observance. An official letter from the Jerusalem Church decided the issue. Though requiring minimal observance, this decree affirmed the belief that salvation came only from Jesus and not even indirectly through the law. Comedian Groucho Marx once said, “I don’t want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member.” We laugh because usually the opposite is the case. We don’t want to belong to any club that would have anyone very different from me as a member. The Church, however, is true to its calling when the welcome mat is out for all. Acts today gives us a “tweeter’s” version of the early council of Jerusalem on the issue of whether Gentiles can be received into the community without circumcision and accepting the Law of Moses. Take some time to read all of Chapter 15 of Acts to hear the three important speeches that determined the conditions for the early Church. In a more intimate manner of expression, though no less binding, Jesus speaks about the requirements for having the Father and him come to dwell with the disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word.” That “word” we heard last week, his great commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus gives further assurance: “The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” In both instances the Holy Spirit is recognized. May the Holy Spirit always continue to work on the Church’s membership drive and guide the deliberations of its leaders. “Holy Spirit, you descended upon Christ at his baptism, guided him through his ministry, and were his first gift after the Father raised him from the dead. Continue to be with his body, the Church, to guide its work so that all its members live according to his word.”

Transfiguration Academy “Being able to make Christ present in the sacraments, in preaching and teaching and loving and serving, is a blessing unparalleled in human existence! After 40 years, I can still say, ‘Here I am Lord. Send Me.’”

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor, St. John the Evangelist, Bergenfield; Pastoral Administrator, Transfiguration Academy Transfiguration, being a co-sponsored school, is fortunate to have the leadership and support of the clergy from Ascension, St. Mary’s, and St. John’s. Not only do they provide financial and moral support, but they also teach at all grade levels in the school. Each has said, in his own way, “Here I am Lord. Send. Me.” In a similar way, all of our faculty and staff at Transfiguration have answered the call in our own way. Transfiguration faculty and staff teaches and preaches the Gospel every day, by word and by example, in their devotion to their faith, their students, and their subjects. Leading by example, many serve in their own parish communities on their parish councils and as eucharistic ministers. To paraphrase St. Francis of Assisi, preach the gospel every day; if necessary, use words. The administration, staff, faculty, and students of Transfiguration Acadamy congratulate and thank Msgr. Richard Arnhols on the occasion of his 40th Anniversary of his ordination. May God continue to bless him.
