Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year had the longest Christmas shopping season with an early Thanksgiving, and the shortest spiritual season of Advent, with only 3 weeks and a day! Hopefully preparations in both areas have been sufficient for you to celebrate with joy the birthday of Jesus at our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses and whatever family celebrations you may have afterwards. As usual, we thank you for your generosity to the parish and to the priests, throughout the year and especially at this festive season.

+++

Also I wish to commend our various choirs who lead us in our many Masses throughout the year, and remind you that choral presentations will precede the 9:00pm Spanish and 12:00Midnight Masses on Christmas Eve. Come at least a half hour early for a good seat and time to prepare for the Mass to follow.

+++

On behalf of all the clergy and lay staff of our parish, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! May we celebrate each day the presence of “Jesus—Emmanuel—God-with-us!”

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Presented with the seeming impossibility of conceiving a child by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary did not stumble in her faith or try to run away from the angel Gabriel. Instead, she believed that God was capable of doing what He promised, and simply asked how it would come about. In faith, Mary relied on God and not on herself. Her “yes” to the Lord on the day that the angel visited her was the result of an entire life built upon saying “yes” to God in the small, every day situations of her life.

In each of the important events in Mary’s life, the writers of the gospels are quick to point out that Mary, though not understanding why things happened, would ponder the events in her heart. She treasured the things God did for her, and she spent time in prayer and reflection over them. As a result, her life flowed out of trust in what God had promised for her and through her Son, Jesus.

Every day, we have the opportunity to imitate Mary in her love for God by pondering who He is and the marvelous promises He has given us. As we draw close to Jesus in our prayer today, we too can be empowered to say “yes” to Him in our everyday situations. Every act of love and trust points to the hope we have in God’s promises. Every act of faith builds the kingdom of God. We encourage one another every time we are obedient to the Lord, and every time we sit at Jesus’ feet and allow Him to fill us with His love.

The life of God within us cannot be hidden but manifests itself in acts of love and generosity. Mary demonstrated great faith and trust when she willingly accepted God’s purposes for her. Even Zechariah, having ample time to ponder the marvels of God, was made ready to raise John to be the herald for the Messiah. At the end of his silence, he could not help but proclaim the wonders of God’s plan of salvation and eagerly embrace God’s purposes for his son. Let us all draw close to God and ask Him for the grace to imitate Mary’s “yes” to Him.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” Luke 1:28

Faith is a gift from God. Take time in silence and thank Him for all the gifts He has given you. Try to set aside any anger or resentment you have and really open your heart to receive the gift of God’s mercy and forgiveness. We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness first before we can give it to others.

Middle States Reaccreditation & Tiger for a Day The Middle States Association of Elementary Schools recently completed their reaccreditation visit of our Academy. This process involves the entire school community examining where the school is now and planning for the continued improvement of the school over the next seven years. Although the written report will not be available for several months, at the conclusion of the three day visit, the team was very affirming of Transfiguration Academy. They especially commended the quality of the instruction, the community spirit they experienced throughout their visit, and the strong Catholic identity that was evident at the school. They were particularly positive about their interactions with the students, parents, advisory board, faculty and staff. We appreciate that our students’ families have selected Transfiguration Academy as their first choice for their children’s academic, social and spiritual needs. On February 21, 22, and 23, we are offering an opportunity for public school children to experience Transfiguration Academy firsthand by being a “Tiger for a Day.” Students in grades K - 8 can spend one of those three days at Transfiguration Academy when the local public schools are closed. Each student visitor will be partnered with a student ambassador from the Academy, attend all classes for his or her grade level, be treated to a hot lunch, and take home a small gift in remembrance of their “Tiger for a Day” experience.

To learn more about our “Tiger for A Day” program, please email [email protected] or call the school office at 201-384-3627.
