Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, At this time I put out an urgent request for volunteers to help us move items from our parish buildings to the special dumpster we will be obtaining for Saturday, August 12th, beginning at 9am. For more information, see the announcement on page 5.

Cardinal Tobin recently received a letter from the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This year marks the 400th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul’s realization that he was called to serve the poorest of the poor. The theme of this anniversary year is from the Gospel of Matthew: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” In 1833, this gospel story inspired their founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, to recruit fellow students to go out into the streets of Paris to bring food and other necessities to the very poor, strangers no more! The Society of St. Vincent de Paul seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity by person-to-person involvement of its members, to help those in need.

Our parish is pleased to be part of this worldwide ministry of service to the poor. Contributions to our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Fund are always welcome, as we continue to provide assistance to those in need. This may be done by a direct contribution to “St. John’s St. Vincent de Paul Fund” or by placing your donation in any of the poor boxes in church. I join with the officers of the national society in expressing our gratefulness for the welcoming spirit and generosity of so many who help the poor in so many ways on a regular basis.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

What does being a citizen of the kingdom of heaven mean to you? Take a moment to think about this question before you continue on. If we don’t have a deep appreciation of what it means to be in the kingdom of God, then it is unlikely that we will consider it worth sacrificing everything in order to attain it.

If, on the other hand, we know in our hearts the deep love of Jesus and how He came to rescue us from the power of sin and condemnation by His death and resurrection, we will let nothing come between ourselves and Him. He has forgiven every sin of those who have turned to Him in repentance; He wants to restore us to true life with the Father. If we recall these things with gratitude each day, we will know that the kingdom of God is like a treasure or a pearl of great value and we will do all we can to obtain it.

Scripture itself provides us with many examples of people who knew the worth of the kingdom and of those who did not. Consider the case of the rich young man (Mt. 19: 16-22). Jesus tested his heart by asking him to abandon his beloved worldly possessions. This was more than the wealthy Israelite expected to be asked to do. His wealth was more meaningful to him than Jesus; his material goods were more real than the promise of eternal life.

St. Paul’s outlook was the complete antithesis of this (Philippians 3: 7-9). He considered everything as loss compared to the inestimable treasure of knowing Jesus and serving Him. His greatest desire was to know Christ; all else was refuse—in Greek, skubalon, which is literally “dung”.

If we are to be like Paul and treasure the kingdom of God, we need to know God’s love in our hearts. The experience of God’s love will make us long for His kingdom above all else. The Holy Spirit will reveal the depths of this love to us as we pray and ask the Lord to show it to us.

“Holy Spirit, come and touch our hearts that we may know the great love of God the Father in Jesus Christ and, knowing this, may come to understand that the kingdom of God is worth everything.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Do you really trust God? Do you believe that all things work for good? Faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, means that God’s plan for our lives may be different than our plan. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God; His plan is always better!

Also, we will be looking for volunteers from parish groups and organizations who can actually help us on that Saturday to move the items to the dumpster. If you can help, please contact Deacon Jim or leave a message for him at the rectory.

Testing for Catholic High School Entrance This Fall, 8th grade students in Catholic elementary schools and public school students seeking admission to an archdiocesan Catholic high school will take a new testing vehicle under the Cooperative Admissions Examination Program (COOP) to assist school staff in evaluating freshmen candidates. The High School Placement Test (HSPT) produced by Scholastic Testing Services, Inc., replaces a previous test by CTB McGraw-Hill that they are not expected to keep offering. The new version of the COOP exam is a comprehensive high school admissions guide that has been used extensively through the nation for over 50 years. The test, which is updated each year, provides each participating school with score reports highlighting details of performance of individual students. The COOP exam measures scholastic aptitude in verbal and non-verbal abilities and achievement in reading, language arts and mathematics. However, it is only one criterion for admission to participating Catholic high schools. When used in conjunction with effort and performance ratings from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, as well as previous standardized test results, secondary schools are able to gauge the readiness of applicants seeking admission to college preparatory educational programs. Most high schools also consider other factors such as attendance and disciplinary records, and some may choose to consider essays and interviews. Go to http://njcoopexam.org for more information!

Academy of the Holy Angels Beginning September 1, 2017, all applicants to Academy of the Holy Angels must take the Upper Level Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) as part of our application process. For details and to register on line visit:

https://www.holyangels.org/admissions/ssat-prep-classes.
