Blessing of Candles Wednesday, February 2, 2011

The Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas Day commemorates the “Presentation of Jesus” in the temple and the purification of Mary 40 days after His birth. Candles have been blessed this day since the 11th century. The Blessing of Candles will take place at the 7:00am, 9:00am and 7:30pm Masses, February 2nd.

Candles for home use will be available in the sacristy after all the Wednesday Masses. These candles will also be available throughout the year in the rectory. We ask an offering of $5.00 per set.

Blessing of Throats Thursday, February 3, 2011 The practice of Blessing of Throats on February 3rd originated with St. Blaise. As legend has it, a mother came to St. Blaise because her young son had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At St. Blaise’s command, the

child was able to cough up the bone. We pray through the intercession of St. Blaise that God delivers us from throat ailments and from every other evil. The Blessing of Throats will take place AFTER the 7:00am, 9:00am and 7:30pm Masses on Thursday.

The Word Among Us Booklets The February issue of the Word Among Us booklets are available at the the exits of the church. Please take one per family as we have a limited supply. The Word Among Us booklet contains the complete Catholic Sunday Masses for the month of February and daily meditations for February 1st to March 8th.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I was so delighted to represent you, our parishioners, at the kickoff reception for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our 2010 final results were as follows:

Pledged $224,926.50, which is 98.38% of our stretch goal of $228,629.50 Our parish rebate, based on payments received through January 12, was the largest ever: $83,974.06.

Payments of $220,019.50 achieved 265.85% of our goal, ranking us once again as 2nd place of all parishes in our Archdiocese. Only one parish received a higher rebate for having raised more money: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Ridgewood.

Thank you to all who made the 2010 appeal another success for our parish and our archdiocese!

Pledge Weekend for the 2011 appeal is February 5th and 6th (next weekend). We will show this year’s video at all the Masses, and invite every parish family to participate once again. Our goal for 2011 has been increased to $95,371.00, and our stretch goal to $242,021.00. On Wednesday, February 2nd, at 7pm, an “Evening Prayer for Consecrated Life” will be offered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Consecrated religious, by their lives of total surrender to God and through Him, to others, render the hope of future blessings for the Church and for the world, enslaved by so many false promises. An “Evening Prayer” gives us a special opportunity to render deep gratitude for the sign of Consecrated witness to every member of the Church. All are welcome! Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

If anyone ever asks you how many beatitudes Matthew’s Jesus preached in his Sermon on the Mount, the answer is eight. You can memorize all eight beatitudes by chopping them in half. The first four can be recalled by using one word for each: poor, mourn, meek, and hungry. The last four “mercifully” have three “P” words in a row: pure, peacemakers, and persecuted. If you make it into two sentences, you will have the beatitudes forever with you. You can be there on the mountain with Jesus listening to him say, “Blessed are the poor...those who mourn...the meek...and those who hunger. Blessed are the merciful...the pure in heart… the peacemakers...and the persecuted.”

Transfiguration Academy The following is a recent letter to the editor of the Twin Boro News, sent by a Transfiguration Academy parent. Sunday, January 31st, 2011 marks the beginning of Catholic Schools’ Week where churches, families and local communities celebrate the positive aspects of Catholic education. Why do we send our four children to Catholic schools when we pay such high taxes toward Dumont government schools? How can any of us afford Catholic schools today when the economy is doing so poorly and many are still out of work? We’ve been asked these difficult questions so many times lately, we felt we should try to answer them honestly and publicly, which hasn’t been easy. After all, Bergen County has some of the best public schools in the State of New Jersey not to mention the United States as a whole. And for many of us, our taxes have risen while our salaries have, at best, stayed the same. In fact, the term “expendable income” is one that’s become almost nonexistent in our home. So, why do we send our children to Transfiguration Academy Catholic School at St. John’s in Bergenfield? First, we believe Transfiguration is beyond excellent from an academic standpoint. The academy has received about 2.4 million dollars in scholarships and awards since its opening four years ago. This not only speaks for the excellent teachers on staff, but also the capabilities of the students. Students are valued as unique and distinct individuals who are encouraged to work to the best of their own personal abilities. At Transfiguration, the students are given the opportunity to utilize an outstanding state-of-the-art curriculum that includes a new Engineering and Technology Lab, Science Lab, and Math Team. In addition, the students are also given an opportunity to excel in extracurricular activities like basketball, tennis, cheerleading, drama, dance, choir, band, debate, and chess. Second, what sets Transfiguration Acadmy or another Catholic School apart from the very good public schools we have right here where we live? At Transfiguration, there’s an intangible element called “environment.” Our children spend more time in school than anywhere else except for the home. Transfiguration Academy has an atmosphere of faith, prayer, discipline, respect, order, and virtue. This is for one simple reason - God. God is allowed in the school at Transfiguration Academy. Each day begins with prayer and Catholic values are weaved into all facets of the educational experience. However, the faculty and students that make up Transfiguration are not just Catholic Christians. They are Protestants, Jews, Hindus, and Muslims who believe in the Catholic school model for individualism and universality. The multicultural aspect of Transfiguration Academy’s community includes students from 55 different ethnic backgrounds and multiple religious denominations. Our annual International Night is always one of the most popular gatherings with hundreds of people sharing their unique cultures and backgrounds with delicious food and diverse entertainment. Third, how can we afford Catholic school with the economy in a downfall? We found Transfiguration to be reasonably affordable. We pay $7,100 per year to send our four children to the school. That is only a little more that $1,700 each per year. Local parishes can provide assistance to families who cannot afford Catholic school. No matter the cost, though, we believe Catholic schools have irreplaceable value. As parents raising children, we begin with the end in mind. We want to raise happy, healthy, and holy childrren who are edudated as complete persons - physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. W. Clement Stone once said, “You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyze your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping toward your success, or are they holding you back?” For us, Catholic School was the only answer, and Transfiguration Academy has become a second home.
