KINDLY REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERSJohn Baine

May his soul, and the souls of all our faithful departed share in the fullness of life and peace

with God.

WE OFFER OUR PRAYERSfor members of our Collaborative who are ill,

remembering especially: Peter, Celeste, Bob, Julia, Kathy, Bob, Karen, Mike,

Molly, Priscilla, Denise, Caroline, Pamela, Irene and Caroline

Please continue to keep all those affected by the coronavirus, their families, and our health care workers

in your prayers.

We are pleased to announce that our Collaborative Service Commission and POWIR committee have decided to sponsor a refugee family from Afghanistan. Once again, we will be partnering with Catholic Charities in this effort. This year Catholic Charities is collaborating with the Jewish Community Relations Council. Our brothers and sisters at Temple Beth Elohim of Wellesley will also be sponsoring a family and we are looking for creative ways to work together!

Our POWIR co-chairs Barbara Viechnicki and Barbara Weidlich will be looking for as much engagement as possible from parishioners. We need your help for this important act of mercy. Please let us know if you can provide your time and talent in one of these areas: Health/Dental, Education, Community/Employment or Housing/Furnishings. Our present priority is housing/furnishing. Please contact Barbara Viechnicki at [email protected] or Mary Campion at [email protected]. We are not collecting clothing or furnishings at this time. A future announcement will be coming about monetary donations, food cards etc.. We thank you for your continued prayers as we commit to Jesus' invitation to 'welcome the stranger'.

HELPING A FAMILY FROM AFGHANISTAN

Are YOU reading this bulletin? Then this message is for YOU.

Why is this for YOU?Because the people it concerns are not yet reading the bulletin! We need YOU to extend a personal invitation to someone you know who might be interested in finding out more about our Catholic faith.

RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the name of the official process of becoming a member of the Catholic Church. The journey begins with a welcome and an opportunity to share both hopes and hesitations in a small group discussion.

It's as simple as that. There is no commitment required at this stage. We are eager to share the goodness of our Catholic faith. Please join us as our gatherings begin in October. For more information, email [email protected]

RCIA INVITATIONDo you feel a desire to be

trained as a Eucharistic Minister?Do you feel a prompting to

proclaim the Word of God as a Lector at Mass? Are you called to comfort the grieving by serving at the

Altar for funeral Masses?Do you want to steward financial offerings

by gathering the collection?

Have you been waiting for a specific call to serve? THIS IS THAT CALL!

Serving in these ministries is not a weekly commitment. The Pastoral staff will train you and work with flexibility around your schedule. We are the Church! It's time to offer your unique gifts, given in abundance by His grace, to His glory! With an openness to God's call, please contact: [email protected]

Only For Today by Saint John XXIII Only for today, I will seek to live my day positively, without trying

to solve the problems of my life all at once.

Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the next world, but also in this one.

Only for today, I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it.

Only for today, I will make a plan for myself: I may not follow it to

the letter, but I will make it. And I will guard against haste and indecision.

Only for today, I will firmly believe, despite appearances, that the

good Providence of God cares for me as if I were the only person in the world.

Only for today, I will have no fears. In particular, I will not be afraid

to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe in goodness. Saint John XXIII was elected Pope October 28, 1958. He died 1963. His canonization took place in 2014 and his feast day is October 11.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is a tragic reality in families today. The bishops issued a statement on domestic violence over 20 years ago (“When I Call for Help”), but many people do not know what the Church’s teaching is. Some people mistakenly believe that they must stay in an abusive situation. For help or to learn more: Made for Love podcast: The episode “When Love Means Leaving” addresses domestic abuse and a Catholic response; find it at: www.marriageuniqueforareason.org USCCB Statement on Domestic Violence: https://www.usccb.org/topics/marriage-and-family-life-ministries/when-i-call-help-pastoral-response-domestic-violence Education and Research on Domestic Abuse: www.catholicsforfamilypeace.org Domestic Violence Hotline: Call 800-799-7233 or visit www.thehotline.org

Voice of the Faithful's 2021 ConferenceRe–Membering the Church: Moving Forward will look closely at the body of the Church to see how structure, power, participation, and accountability can be brought together within the Church to fulfill its mission of bringing Christ to the world.

The online Zoom conference takes place Oct. 22-23, 2021. At 7pm, Oct. 22, conference registrants can gather for free Zoom listening sessions to talk about issues affecting the church today. The full-day conference on Oct. 23 will begin at 9am. The cost will be $50. College undergraduates can attend for free. To register visit: https://www.votf.org/content/voice-faithful-2021-conference

VOTF supports a vision in the Church of openness and respect between hierarchy and the laity, more inclusivity within the church, and collaborations that lead to more activities

and initiatives within the church that reflect lay voices.

FINANCIAL UPDATES

In today's Gospel and earlier this week in Luke's Gospel we learned that to follow in Christ's example is not to lord our authority over others or to merely adhere to a set of rules but to unconditionally love God and serve our neighbor. Going to church once a week is not sufficient. We must be willing to continually serve others even when it hurts, praise God, and allow his Grace to cleanse the vices that are within. Please remember that there are members in our very own community that need our help.

Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can "make God's presence known" to those who are suffering and poor. All requests are confidential. God Bless.

OPEN HOUSES

Maysoon Khair will be visiting our Collaborative on the weekend of October 30-31, selling handcrafted Olive Wood items such as nativity scenes, crucifixes, rosaries, and many other beautiful religious items in support of School of Joy, a school in the greater Bethlehem area for children with diversified abilities. The continued effects of the global pandemic on the tourist economy in the Holy Land has had a serious impact on the school's finances. If you are able to support this wonderful organization by stocking up on Christmas gifts, you'll be a double blessing! Please look for Maysoon and the wonderful carvings before and after Masses at St. John the Evangelist Church on the weekend of October 30 and 31.
