Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Size is a tricky thing. If we didn’t know better, who would ever believe that a large oak tree began with an acorn the size of a marble? Who would believe that the Grand Canyon was started millions and millions of years ago by a small stream of water? Great effects are often the result of small beginnings.

For some reason, it’s God’s purpose to use the small to accomplish the great. In Isaiah 62:1-5 we hear that God used a small nation to bless the nations of the earth. He used a humble peasant girl to give birth to the Son of God. In the hands of God, the small can become great.

In John 2:1-12, we hear that the first miracle performed by Jesus was turning water into wine at a marriage celebration. This action may seem to be a terrible waste of divine power. Why not turn stones into bread to feed the hungry? But this miracle sends a message that Christ is concerned about the small pleasures as well as the large problems of life.

Sometimes we are afraid to take our small requests to God in prayer. But Jesus taught that God’s concern touches all things, great and small. No sparrow falls to the ground without his notice. Even the hairs on our heads are numbered. God is concerned about the everyday details as well as the overall direction of our lives.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

“To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” (1 Corinthians 12:7) - St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a reason. How has God blessed you? Are you using your gifts according to God’s plan, helping to do His work here on earth? Remember that if you don’t do the work God planned for you, no one else can do it.

“From Thanksgiving until New Year’s, most of us run at a frantic pace. There are not only the parties and caroling and gift exchanges, but also the extra charitable endeavors we take on: making donations to our favorite charities or an extra offering at Christmas Mass, serving at a homeless shelter or feeding those at a local soup kitchen. Whatever our commitments, the Christmas season

calendar is always jam-packed. So, now that the season is winding down, what comes next? Aside from setting time aside for that long winter’s nap, there is an important factor to consider.

Ultimately, we need to remember that giving is not seasonal. Giving during the holidays can seem exciting, even noble. We may even pat ourselves on the back after doing our charitable Christmas deeds, and then cross them off our to-do lists for the year.

However, for the homeless, the hungry, and the underprivileged, their needs continue after our Christmas giving is done. Sure, it’s wonderful to give more of yourself during Advent and the Christmas season. But it’s important to remember to share your time, talent, and treasure the other 11 months of the year. After all, being a steward is a full time job.” Copyright 2013 Stewardship Education All Rights Reserved. Phone 888-822-1847 Email [email protected]

FOOD FOR FRIENDS NEXT COLLECTION WEEKEND OF

JANUARY 25-26TH

Thanks to all those who supported the Edge food drive at Christmas and to all the young people for their energy and caring spirits. May God bless you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

Please remember to take bags home with you the weekend of January 19-20th and return them to church the follow-ing weekend, filled with items such as canned and dried fruits and vegetables, lunch meals, powdered milk, pasta, spices, rice, peanut butter, jelly, cereals, and other non-perishable foods. Please check the expiration dates and condition of packaged foods. There are suggestion lists attached to the bags, indicating special needs for the month. Please look for the bags in the vestibules at the Mass you attend, and take one or two home with you. You may, of course, bring grocery bags from home as well. Grocery store gift cards and cash are always appreciated as well.

Please come to the conference room at the rear of church after 9:00 a.m. Mass on January 26th, if you’re able to help sort and pack the donations. Thank you for supporting this worthwhile endeavor. God bless you.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL NEWS

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our parishioners, the St. Joan of Arc conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society assisted 22 families with necessary food items and Christmas gifts for children during the month of December. We are very grateful to you for your response to the requests on our Giving Tree ornaments and for contributions of any other kind. We say a special “thank you” to the individual parishioner who provided beautifully assembled food boxes and to the craftsman who constructed 4 lovely wooden dollhouses as gifts for needy children.

The mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is to help all who request assistance. We thank you for your concerns, and we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to help the needy family which has been soliciting donations outside our church grounds for the past few weekends.

We also remind you that the St. Vincent de Paul truck will visit our parish again on the weekend of April 13-14. We encourage you to clean out your closets and save unwanted items for donation at that time.

PEOPLE OF LIFE

“In spite of the debate surrounding abortion, every day thousands of women make this choice. Believing that

somehow the abortion is ‘for the best,’ they go ahead and deny what they intuitively feel. They decide in haste and live out their lives in silent agony. I know because I did. I also know that healing is possible—but only if you face your decision, embrace the loss of your child, and reach out to a loving God.” Terri Luther H.E.A.R.T. Director (Healing the Effects of Abortion Related Trauma) “During my first planned pregnancy, I was shocked and went numb when I heard my baby’s heart beat. That is when I real-ized that my previous abortion had killed my tiny baby—not just removed a mass of tissue as I had been told.” Amy from the Foothill Pregnancy Center
