2018 Holy Father’s Appeal
Our parish will hold the Holy Father‟s Appeal next
weekend 30 June / 1 July for which we‟ll ask your support. The appeal highlights the global charitable causes of Pope Francis and is aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by natural disasters, wars, the refugee crisis and poverty, to name a few. It‟s an opportunity for us to get involved in an important initiative of the Catholic Church on a local level, and we ask you to give what you can . A true Christian puts oneself aside in order for God to be seen, as St. John the Baptist did. “A Christian does not announce himself; he announces an-other, prepares the way for another: the Lord,” the Pope observed in his June 24 daily Mass. John the Baptist had a threefold vocation: to prepare the way for the Messiah, to discern who he was and to diminish himself so that others would follow Jesus. Although many began to follow John because “his words were strong” and went “to the heart,” the saint did not give in to temptation “to
believe that he was important. Instead, when asked whether or not he was the Mes-siah, John replied, “I am preparing the way of the Lord.” This is the 1st vocation of the Baptist, to “prepare the people, to prepare the hearts of the people for the encounter with the Lord," Francis said. The 2nd part of John‟s vocation was “to discern, from among so many good people, who the Lord was,” he continued, noting how “the Spirit revealed this to him, and he had the courage of saying: „This is the one. This is the Lamb of God, he who takes away the sins of the world.‟” “This is the one and more worthy than me!” the disciples left him and fol-lowed Jesus. The third aspect of John‟s vocation was to diminish, and his “life began to descend, to diminish, because the Lord would grow until he was destroyed.” “He must increase, but I must decrease,” the Pope said, adding that “this was the more difficult stage for John, because the Lord had a style that he had not imagined.” John the Baptist was imprisoned at the end of his life and had to send his disciples to confirm that Jesus was the Messiah. “He suffered not only the darkness of the cell, but the darkness in his heart: „But will it be this one? Did I make a mistake?‟” Pope Francis said. It was not clear if Jesus was the Messiah, because he came in a much different way than expected, the Pope reflected. However, since John “was a man of God, he asked his disciples to go to (Jesus) and ask: „But is it really you? Or should we wait for another?‟” “And a Christian should be a man who can step aside,” he concluded, “because the Lord will grow in the heart and soul of others.”

Annual Marriage Mass & Renewal of Vows The Marriage Mass and Renewal of Vows will take place on Sunday, 8th July at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, at 10.30 am. All married couples are wel-come. Mass will be celebrated by His Grace, Arch-bishop Anthony Fisher. Married couples wishing to attend to renew their vows should register with the Life, Marriage and Family Centre on 9307 8404 or [email protected]. Registered cou-ples celebrating 50th, 55th, 60th, or 65th wedding anni-versaries will receive a special certificate from Arch-bishop Fisher. Special recognition will also be given to couples who were married at the Cathedral.
The Liturgy Office of the Sydney Archdiocese is offering formation courses for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion over 2 sessions (7th & 14th July) and Acolytes over 3 sessions (4, 11 & 18
Aug) that are to be conducted at St Charles Borromeo. Please see Fr Edu-ardo for a registration form if you are interested. A copy of your Baptism Cer-tificate is required to be attached to your registration form.

World Youth Day Panama 2019 Subsidies on Offer - The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney invites young adults to pre-register for the WYD 2019 Panama via Washing-ton DC pilgrimage, which will be led by His Grace, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP. How does the subsidy work? - Pilgrims wishing to accept the offer of a subsidy need to pre-register by depositing a minimum, non-refundable deposit of $1,000. The de-posit will confirm your place on the pilgrimage. The Archdiocese will then add $1,000 to your account. The indicative cost of the pilgrimage, provided by, is $8,686. For pilgrims considering the optional Mexico extension, the indicative total cost is $9,786. Note that, should the pilgrimage not go ahead as planned, all deposits shall be re-turned in full.
