OBLIGATION The Catechism says: “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist...unless excused for a serious reason...Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin (i.e., a mortal sin). Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church...Together they testify to God’s holiness and their hope of salvation” (#2181-82).

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or en-joyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driv-ing schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some reli-gious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scrip-tures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors.

A Stewardship Prayer
Father, out of your goodness and mercy you have
blessed each of us with many gifts. May your spirit give us the grace to recognize our gifts and the faith to use them in service to
you and your Church. May our practice of stewardship be a sign of our trust in
you - trusting that you will continue to provide for all our needs.
We ask that our time, talent and treasure be used to further our mission here on earth.
And when our time on earth is through, may we be welcomed into your heavenly kingdom
and hear you say, “well done my good and faithful servant, come, share your master’s joy!” Amen.
Our Father...Hail Mary...Glory be... Mary, Model of Stewardship, pray for us.
Thank you for your generosity to St. James Parish,

PLEASE THANK OUR ADVERTISERS!
Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we us to communicate with you. Through our ar-rangement with the J.S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin print-ing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers—many of who are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Tell the business owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. This is one small way we can work together within our community.
A strong and vibrant parish is good for community and a strong business community is good for our parish.

BIBLE STUDY AND DISCUSSION
We are offering 3 Bible sessions on Tuesday at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the 17th and 24th of September and October 1st in the Klein Li-brary.
Topics will be in order of the dates: The Bible, Tradition, and
Church teaching. All are welcome.
The Bible: What is it, where did it come
from, how do we use it? Tradition: What was handed down to us
by the Apostles. Teaching: What does the Church teach
and where can I find it. After the three sessions there may be a sec-ondary event whereby further study is taken into individual homes.
Think about it. Hope to see you. Fr. Dave

ALL IN THE FAMILY
The term “family” gets used quite often today to describe a series of close bonds that are (or ought to be) present among various groups. Parishes, schools, scout troops, work groups, many different kinds of or-ganizations commonly refer to themselves as “family” members with each other. How shocking it will be for us today, in our nuclear families or parish families, to learn from the lips of Jesus himself that it is in the re-nouncing of family relationships and the rending of family ties, even the despising of our own God-given life, that we will come to know and understand what it means to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ. Is all of this to be taken literally? Yes and no. The Gospel today is telling us that in order to progress as a disci-ple, to follow Christ more closely, it is Christ and his gospel that alone can be the heart and center of our lives. Will most of us be called upon literally to leave our family members? Most likely not. But if we are dis-ciples, we must be ready to do so. A FAMILY GUIDED BY PERFECT WISDOM
The first reading from Wisdom states, in its own way, this very same principle. All that we know of this life, all that we hold dearest, that we love and cherish most, all of this is still not of the unsearchable and un-knowable riches of divine wisdom. Jesus’ extreme de-scription of what we must reject establishes the same sort of chasm between God’s ways and our ways as the author of the Wisdom passage does. But both teachers also instruct us that God can and God does, through the spirit of grace from on high, come to us and reveal to us the ways of heaven. We do not or can-not search them out for ourselves in our earthly things or human relationships. But we can, with God’s help, set aside our own limited natures and come closer in the loving bond God has for us and is prepared to spread among us.

To Those Who Bring Small Children to Church:
There you are at church. Your baby or toddler is rest-less. Perhaps even a little boisterous. You try to si-lence them, and nothing. You try to pacify them with food or toys, and nothing. Eventually, you resort to the last thing you wanted to do: you pick them up, and be-fore a watching audience, you make the march out of the church. All the while you’re a little embarrassed, maybe a little frustrated too. You might even think to yourself, “There’s no point in coming to church. I get nothing out of it because I have to constantly care for my kid.” I want you—mothers and / or fathers—to know just how encouraging you are to so many. The elderly woman who often feels alone beams with a smile at the sight of you wrestling with your little one. She’s been there be-fore. She knows how hard it can be, but she smiles be-cause to hear that brings back precious memories. Seeing young parents and their small children brighten her day; she may have just received bad news about her health but seeing the vitality of young ones re-moves—if but for one moment—her fears. The older man who always seems to be grouchy notices you too. He’s always talking about how children in this day have no respect or sense of goodness. But he sees you—a young family– in church every week. Like clockwork, he can depend on the sight of you and your young family. You give him hope that maybe the church isn’t doomed after all, because there are still young parents who love God enough to bring their restless children to church. Bring you children to church! If we don’t hear crying, the church is dying. As hard as it might be for you as a parent who’s half-asleep, keep on doing what you’re doing. You are encouragement, and you’re starting off your children’s lives as you should. —Author unknown

The dinner Is set for Sunday, September 22, 2019, after 11AM Mass. We are asking everyone who has donated ANY time to our Parish to let us know if you plan to join us for the dinner. We need to get an idea of how many people would like to attend. If you don’t register, there won’t be enough food!
We realized there are many who give of their time but are overlooked because it is not an “event”. We wish to modify this practice so that our entire Parish family is recognized and afforded our ap-preciation accordingly, so this includes ALL MIN-ISTRIES!
We extend the invitation to all Parish volunteers and a “significant other” guest.
Please complete the form below or go to our website at:
www.saintjamesthegreater.org
Click on the “Appreciate Dinner” button and fill out the RSVP form so we can get an estimate of how many will attend. The dinner is to be buffet style, catered by Scrementi’s of Steger.

HELP ST. JAMES PARISH
Do you shop on Amazon.com? If you do, Amazon will donate a portion of almost
all your purchases to St. James Church!
It’s easy, it doesn’t cost you any more, and you
use the same procedure you are used to. You do not have to change anything except the site
where you shop.
It is still Amazon, just their charitable branch, Smile.Amazon.com
There are two ways to set up:
1. The easiest way is to go to our website,
www.saintjamesthegreater.org and scroll down the home page to the “Support Our Parish” section. There you will see a link asking you if you shop on Amazon.com. Click the link and it will take you directly to the Smile.Amazon.com site which will ask you to verify that you wish to set St. James Catholic Church as your default choice. Click “Yes” and you are now donating to St. James every time you buy.
2. The second way is to direct your browser to
www.smile.amazon.com After you log in you will see a box under the search bar listing your current charitable selection (or probably that you haven’t selected one yet). If there is no selection, click the box and it will open a search window for you to select a charity. You can enter St. James Catholic Church and our listing will come up. Click to add this as your charity of your choice.
Then remember to save (bookmark) the Smile.Amazon.com location in our “Favorites” list so you go to it every time you shop. Remem-ber to check under the product search box to see if St. James Catholic Church is listed. If it is not, or you don’t see it, you are probably on the regular Amazon.com site and your purchases will not count. Smile.Amazon.com foundation donates 0.5% of all your qualified purchases to the organization your choice (hopefully St. James Catholic Church) whenever you shop with them. Make your purchases count and help your Parish at the same time!!!
