St. Nersess Seminary’s Dean V. Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan,Director of Youth and Vocations Rev. Fr. StepanosDoudoukjian, and St. Nersess Seminarians visited the NewEngland area on November 7-9, 2008. On Friday evening, aprogram was held for college students at Holy Trinity inCambridge. A program for junior high and high school stu-dents was held at St. James all day on Saturday. OnSunday morning, Fr. Daniel celebrated Divine Liturgy at St.James and delivered the sermon. Fr. Daniel and the semi-narians at St. James that morning spoke to our parish-ioners during fellowship hour about St. Nersess’s missionand their own personal experiences and callings.

It is said that “Each cup of tea represents animaginary voyage.” Indeed, on the afternoon of Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Third St. JamesArmenian Church Hye Tea in Watertown, MA, over 300women embarked on countless imaginary voyages.

Event chairs Mary Goudsouzian and Carol Yeghiayanorganized and planned a lovely and wonderful afternoon.Women entered the St. James Cultural Center to a lobbybeautiful adorned by Faith Patriquin of Cass the Florist.

Guests then entered St. James Keljik Hall and reveled in thebeauty of over 30 tables decorated by creative hostesses.

The afternoon began with guests engaging in conversation and enjoying thebeauty of the tables. The women instantly embarked on many voyages: from anelegant British tea to a garden party, from India to Jerusalem, from a charmingbeehive-themed table to an environmentally sound “green” table to a spa expe-rience. Each table was exquisitely adorned by each of the hostesses.

Then time came for women to enjoy the pleasurable experience of the afternoontea, enjoying Earl Gray and Constant Comfort varieties while delighting indelicious cucumber sandwiches, salmon sandwiches, scones, and Armeniandelicacies (making it a real “Hye” Tea). Guests were also treated to beautifulmusic selections by the Erebuni women’s chorus, as well as an engaging pres-entation by Mary Richardson of New England’s Chronicle newsmagazine.

Henry James said: “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hourdedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” The exquisite tables anddecors, warm conversation, and delicious tea at the St. James Hye Tea made fora most agreeable and memorable experience for all!

Newly Blessed Holy Muron

St. James’ Subdeacon Mark Giragosian attended a special service at theDiocese in New York City on October 12, 2008 to receive the newly-blessedHoly Muron and bring it to St. James. A special service was held at St.James on October 19, 2008 during which Mark presented the Holy Muron,which will be used in sacraments in our parish, to St. James.

e find ourselves at an interest-ing point in time: we’ve electeda new president, we are in the

middle of two wars, and the coun-try is experiencing a difficult economic situa-tion. Many people are anxious and afraid, notsure of what the next day will bring.

It is important especially now to remind our-selves of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ,who repeatedly reminded us not to be afraidor anxious: “Let not your hearts be troubled,believe in God, believe in Me also…. Foryour sake I came into this world.” (John14:1). “Peace I leave with you, my peace Igive unto you… Let not your heart be trou-bled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27).“Do not be anxious for your life, as to whatyou shall eat; nor for your body, as to whatyou shall put on. … And do not seek whatyou shall eat, and what you shall drink, anddo not keep worrying. … For all these thingsthe nations of the world eagerly seek; butyour Father knows that you need thesethings. But seek His kingdom, and thesethings shall be added to you.” (Matthew6:24-34).

We must remember this especially now, aswe enter this blessed time of Advent, whenwe are reminded of these words in the greatstory of the Birth of our Lord, when theangel said to the shepherds: “Do not beafraid; for see — I am bringing you goodnews of great joy for all the people.” (Luke

2:10–11). We certainly are reminded of thisJoy in the Christmas carols we sing: “Joyfulall ye nations rise, join the triumph of theskies,” and “Joy to the world, the Lord iscome,” and “Joy to the earth, the Saviorreigns.”

No matter what we are experiencing in ourpersonal lives – fears, financial concerns,health problems, personal relationships –this is indeed a season of Joy. We must takea moment to experience and to express thetrue Joy that can fill us whenever we con-template the birth of Jesus, of Emmanuel, ofGod-with-us.

We often like to be in control and to haveour desires met and our plans fulfilled as wewant them to be. While as humans we maycreate worldly happiness, God is the onlysource of true Joy. Joy cannot be demand-ed or manipulated or coerced. Unlike pleas-ure or happiness, Joy is rooted in that whichhappens when God is present among peo-ple. Surprisingly, this Joy often coexistswith pain. This can be in a poor economy,during times of war, or during pain and suf-fering. We need look no further than ourown St. James parish – during the darkestof days – the Great Depression – when ourfounders came together in the presence ofGod with Joy in their hearts to build thisparish. And today, we benefit from this Joy,this hope, this presence of God in theirmidst.

It is the presence of God that is the onlycondition for Joy. The opposite is also true– no matter what they own and how healthythey are, if people are not gathered withChrist in their midst, there is no room forJoy.

God is the One who knows how to bring usthrough our difficulties. We read inScripture: “Be anxious for nothing, but ineverything by prayer and supplication withthanksgiving let your requests be madeknown to God.” (Philippians 4:6). We musttrust Him and listen to Him to hear His planfor each of us – not for our will to be done,but for His Will to be done.

At this time of year, perhaps more than anyother, we feel God’s presence through theBirth of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ –God’s presence with us in human flesh.More than two thousand years ago, nearBethlehem, shepherds in the fields weresurprised by Joy. They opened their hearts,followed God’s call, found the young Christchild lying in a manger, and were filled withthe Holy Spirit. May we likewise open ourhearts to our Lord, during this Advent andChristmas season and throughout the year,to be filled by His spirit and joy, to hand overto him our fears and anxieties, and to glori-fy and praise Him, now and always.

St. James held its 2nd satellite pro-gram for Bedford-area parishioners.Scott and Lyn Kapilian graciouslyopened, and warmly welcomedparishioners into, their home. Satelliteprogramming was identified by ourparishioners as a need during the 75thAnniversary needs assessment. Thesatellite programming gathers St.James parishioners in their own com-munities for an evening of fellowshipand friendship. Satellite programmingwill continue in communities in 2009.

The school year started with a registration and orientation onSeptember 13, 2008. It was a pleasure to see all the returning stu-dents and welcome the new ones. We have started with a greatpreschool curriculum, continued with elementary education. It isnever too late to register children for Armenian school. We haveopen registration and special classes to meet the children’sneeds. This year we are also emphasizing the cultural aspect ofthe Armenian school with dance and drama. We are fortunate tohave the dedicated staff who are committing their Saturday morn-ings for the teaching and continuation of Armenian language and

culture to our children. We as staff and parents would like to seethe Armenian school flourish and prosper with the joint forces ofour Armenian community.

The school held its Annual Banquet on November 2, 2008. NancyKassabian spoke eloquently about the importance of theArmenian language in her life and about the need for education.Our students performed songs and dances. It was a beautifulafternoon enjoyed by all. Thank you to our parishioners who sup-ported this annual event and the students of our school.

The 3rd Annual St. James Walkathon was held onOctober 5, 2008. Special thanks to SharonBazarian McDermott for once again organizingthis year's walkathon and to Jim McDermott forhelping organize the day’s event.

Our parish pledged $20,000 over a three yearperiod to raise enough money to build threehouses. Thanks to our parishioners’ support of thethree Walkathons, and their support of our AnnualFamily Day Thanksgiving Dinner and ChristmasEve collections, we have reached our goal!

ACYOA JuniorsMessage from ACYOA Jrs. ChairWe have had a very busy few months so far since we began thisyear. We stared off the year with out Welcome Back Barbecue,welcoming new members and visiting with old friends. We had aScavenger Hunt in Boston on a Sunday afternoon, looking for dif-ferent landmarks and things in the city (we also found Der Arsenand Yn. Varteni in Boston as we were searching!). Almost 30 ofus then headed to a fun-filled Columbus Day Weekend inProvidence for the October ACYOA Juniors Sports Weekend. Wehelped to decorate the church hall for the fall season and theAnnual Bazaar, and ran the Children’s Activities for the Bazaar.Recently, we had a Retreat and Lock-In at the church withJennifer Morris from the Diocese, who led us in discussions andactivities pertaining to choices we make as teenagers. Weended that weekend with a day at Honey Pot Hill Orchards.

Coming up, we will serve our church at Hye Café, will be takinga trip to Providence for their annual Aravod Dance in earlyDecember and will decorate the church for the Christmas sea-son. We have a Christmas Party planned at Fire and Ice inHarvard Square on December 19 and will be Christmas Carolingaround Watertown on December 21 to help spread Christmas joyduring the season. We are also finalizing a fun Winter and Springcalendar which will include snowtubing and our Hye M’rtsoomweekend.

ACYOA SeniorsOn September 26th the St. James ACYOA Seniors hosted theirfirst event – with over 20 new and old members turning out for anight of socializing and fellowship. The center of attention forthis night were the two “Wii” game systems set-up on large pro-jector screens in the Armene and Veronica Tarvezian Hall.Attendees took turns competing in Wii bowling, tennis and base-ball. While not participating in the friendly competition of the Wiigames, members enjoyed playing tavloo, socializing and meet-ing new people. The event was a great success and an encour-aging start for the ACYOA Seniors!

During the early fall months some of our Seniors spent time join-ing the ACYOA Juniors as coaches and chaperones during theColumbus Day weekend in Providence and others helped in dif-ferent ways at the Annual Church Bazaar. Overall the early fallproved to be a good, energetic start for the group.

On November 7, 2008 some of our ACYOA Seniors attended theSt. Nersess Seminary’s College Evening in New England, whichwas held at Holy Trinity. On November 23, the Seniors will helpto serve at St. James Annual Family Day Thanksgiving Dinner. OnDecember 6, the Seniors will attend the Annual AravodChristmas Dance in Providence, Rhode Island.

The ACYOA Seniors is open to young adults who are 18 yearsold and out of high school. People interested in joining the groupshould contact Mark Giragosian, Chairman at, Mark.Giragosian@gmail.com.

St. James ACYOA Juniors Retreat This being my first year as an ACYOA member, I was looking forwardto the lock-in/retreat on October 24-25. I wasn't quite sure what toexpect, and little did i know that I would learn things that would bet-ter me as a Christian and as a person. The evening started withJennifer Morris, the Diocesan Youth Coordinator, and MariaDerderian, who works for the diocese, leading us in icebreakers.Later that night, Jennifer had us play a game in which she would saya statement about choices that the youth are faced with from day today, and depending on whether we strongly agreed, agreed, strong-ly disagreed, or disagreed, we would stand on different sides of theroom. After that, we all participated in small group discussions aboutchoices that the youth are faced with everyday. Then, we spilt up intogroups and came up with catchy “one liners” related to God that weshould live by. We went to bed at 2 a.m. and got up at 8 a.m. to go toHoney Pot Hill in Stow, MA. We went on a hay ride and through amaze, where we had to choose which path we wanted to take. Myfirst experience in our St. James ACYOA juniors was a positive one.

New Vision Once Again OrganizesSuccessful Silent AuctionSt. James New Vision Group completed another successfulSilent Auction at this year’s annual Bazaar on October 17th and18th, 2008. The event raised over $8,000 with the auctioning ofover one hundred items. Highlights of the items auctioned offincluded a collection of art from Armenian, fine jewelry fromArmenian Jewelers in our area, sporting event tickets and giftcertificates, a small oriental rug, and designer sunglasses andhandbags. The documentary film led us throughSaroyan’s life as a child surviving the genocide, immigrating toAmerica and becoming an internationally renowned ArmenianAmerican writer, playwright, and humanitarian. Before the filmguests enjoyed cocktails while viewing artwork from Armenia.After the film a Q&A session was held with the Kalinians, fol-lowed by a mezze and dessert reception. On behalf of St. JamesArmenian Church we would like to thank the Kalinians for givingus the opportunity to show this historic film.

Women’s Guild

Our Welcome Back dinner and meetingbegan the 2008 – 2009 seasons. Under the leadership ofBea Ohannessian, the members enjoyed a delicious din-ner of wine, appetizers, khyema and losh kebab. Pastofficers Anna Bedirian, Norma Shooshan, HelenNalchian, Hripsime Parsikian, Sona Iskandarian, andRuth Harutunian were recognized for their service to theGuild. A rose bouquet was presented to Ora Margossianon the occasion of her 90th birthday.

Preparation for the Annual St. James Bazaar continued throughout the months of Augustthrough October. Thank you to all our members, friends, families and parishioners for joiningin pinching manti, rolling choreg dough, making pie crusts, layering and buttering fillo dough,mixing fillings for buereg and cream khadayif and all the various tasks for the pastry booth. Aspecial thank you to the following who chaired the various committees: Hrip Parsikian, manti;Leslie Cristello, simit and apricot squares; Sossy Derian, buereg; Val Garabedian, cream andnut khadayif and yalanchi; Mark Kavonian, toorshi; Ruth Harutunian, choreg; NancyKassabian, paklava and bourma; Mary Koumjian, porov kufteh; Mary Bazarian, yalanchi; andLyn Kapilian, pastry booth coordinator.

Rest and relaxation was the theme of our October luncheon meeting. Mary Avedisian, LeonaKevorkian, Alice Gelenian, and Mimi Samuelian planned a delicious buffet. Door prizes donat-

ed by Susan Aznavorian added a bit of excitement.

On November 17 a dinner meeting catered by Delicacies was held. Notonly did members enjoy an Apricot Chicken dinner but Delicacies alsodemonstrated how to make the delicious meal. On December 8, 2008our Recipes from an Armenian Table series continues – attendees willlearn how to make manti, baklava and bourma.

According to the new Diocesan bylaws, dues-paidmembers of a parish must pay their Annual Parish duesby December 31 of a given year in order to be able tovote at the Annual Parish Assembly. In the past, we haveallowed our parishioners to pay their dues the day of theassembly. According to the new policy, we are no longerable to do so. As such, we kindly remind and askparishioners who have not yet paid their 2008Membership Dues to become current by December 31,2008.

The Mission The St. James Child Care Center is a safe and loving Christian environment for the toddlers of St. James. The ChildCare Center fosters an environment reflecting and exemplifying our church’s teachings and values. Children learnabout God through Bible stories, music, and arts and crafts, and receive a strong foundation early in their lives forfaith and spiritual growth.

The Child Care Center is open to St. James parishioners only. Currently the Child Care Center serves parishionerson Sundays during Divine Liturgy. This service supports and helps parents of young children participate in DivineLiturgy and the spiritual life of St. James.

Staff Our St. James Child Care Center is blessed with a staff of loving, caring, and experienced individuals who under-stand the Mission of St. James and the Child Care Center and prioritize children’s safety and wellness at all times.Parents are welcome to stop in and meet our Director Celine Abkar and Staff Member Edrina Boroyan at any time.

What Age Must Children Be?The Child Care Center serves St. James children ages 1-4 years and children turning 5 years old after September15, 2008. This serves as an excellent foundation for children to enter our Sunday School at 5 years of age.

How Do I Reserve A Place For My Child In The Center?Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To make reservations, parents are asked to emailinfo@sthagop.com or call (617) 923-8860 extension 22 beginning on Monday and leave a voice mail with the follow-ing information:Parents’ Names • Child(ren)’s Name(s) and Age(s) • Parents’ Telephone NumberDuring the initial visit, parents are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Parents will be asked to complete adetailed information sheet. Parents are also asked to bring children’s personal and insurance information withthem. All information is held in the strictest of confidence.

Where Is The Child Care Center?The Center is located on the lower level of St. James’s Charles Mosesian Cultural and Youth Center. The Center isa safe, bright and happy environment that children enjoy!

What Do Children Do In The Child Care Center?Children are cared for by loving, qualified and experienced professionals who engage them in individual and com-mon play, story-time, arts and crafts, games, and reading. All activities are guided by and strive to teach Christianvalues. Children are served a light snack.

When Do I Drop Off/Pick Up My Child(ren)? Parents may drop off their children between 9:45 and 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Parents must pick up their chil-dren promptly between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m.

What is Required of Parents?Parents are required to have a cellular telephone with them while their child in the Child Care Center. This phone mustbe on and set to the “vibrate” feature at all times. Parents whose children are not potty-trained need to provide need-ed disposable diapers or pull-ups. Parents will be paged if and when the need for a diaper change arises.

Because the purpose of the Child Care Center is to enable parents to participate in the Divine Liturgy and be anactive part of the spiritual life of our church, parents must remain on the St. James property (worshipping in thesanctuary, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, etc.) while children are in the Child Care Center. Given thepurpose of the center, and for the safety of the child(ren), any parent who leaves the St. James premises while theirchild is in the Child Care Center will be not be permitted to leave their child in the center in the future.

How Much Does It Cost To Leave My Child In The Child Care Center?There is no cost to parents to leave their child(ren) in the Child Care Center. The Center is funded by the St. James75th Anniversary Capital Campaign. Donations toward the Child Care Center are always accepted with gratitudeand appreciated.

REQUIEM SERVICE/HOKEHANKISDArrangements for Requiem Service, Altar Flowers andCandles should be made through the church office byThursday at noon. In accordance with the canons of theArmenian Church, Requiem Services may not be performedon the five major feast days: Armenian Christmas, Easter,The Feast of the Transfiguration, The Feast of theAssumption of the Mother of God, and The Feast of theExaltation of the Holy Cross.

BAPTISMS AND CHRISMATIONSAll baptisms must be scheduled at least two months inadvance by calling the church office. According to theArmenian Church canons, a Baptism may only be performedonce in a person’s lifetime, provided such Baptism has beenperformed in a Christian Church and in the name of the HolyTrinity. At least one of the godparents must be a member ofthe Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church.

WEDDINGSParishioners should contact the church office at least eightmonths in advance. A couple must contact St. James toconfirm the availability of the Pastor and sanctuary prior tomaking any other arrangements. All weddings must followthe Canons of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church andthe laws of Massachusetts. In accordance with Diocesandiscipline mandated by the Primate, all Sacraments must beadministered in the church sanctuary. The couple mustmeet with the Pastor at least once for pre-marital prepara-tion and counseling. Weddings cannot be performed duringGreat Lent or Holy Week, or on the five major feast days:Armenian Christmas, Holy Easter, The Feast of theTransfiguration, The Feast of the Assumption of the Motherof God, and The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

FUNERALSFamilies should make arrangements with the funeral direc-tor of their choice, who will contact the church office toarrange the funeral service. Generally, St. James coordi-nates funerals with Bedrosian Funeral Home andGiragosian Funeral Home; both are located in Watertownand are familiar with our Church traditions. Funerals maynot be performed on religious holidays, major feast days,Saturdays after 3:00 p.m., or on Sundays.
