We have all faced times when we have found it difficult to share our faith with others. We may be afraid of being criticized, teased or even losing our job. It is difficult to face these pressures and fears alone. The courage to face them comes only from trust in God’s loving care. In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends his disciples on a mission to proclaim his message publicly. He warns them that they will face opposition in the form of difficulties, persecution and humiliations, but tells them not to be afraid. He asks them and us to trust in God’s faith-ful care and attention. God watches over the sparrow, the cheapest life sold at the market. He has also counted the hairs of our head, knowing whether they are many or few. If he cares for even the smallest creatures in nature and the smallest details of our lives, he will certainly not abandon anyone who follows the way of Christ. He will give us the strength and courage to defend our faith in Jesus. Living with Christ

Pastoral Notes by Fr. Edmund

God is not a genie… You have read about the wonderful tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp where the genie plays a central role, that is, the servant who appears whenever someone rubs the lamp and fulfills that person’s every wish. A lot of us still tend to imagine God more or less like a benevolent genie whose main function is to solve our problems, eliminate obstacles, remove suffering or prevent disasters from happening. The type of prayers we frequently make demonstrates this human tendency. We resort to novena prayers or devotions that would appear to guarantee us from most forms of unwanted events happening in our lives. Our prayers revolve heavily on asking or petitioning God for favors, material or otherwise. We have succumb to a popular religiosity that subscribes to the belief that God would intervene in our lives if only we keep our promise to do nine consecutive days/nights of praying, as dictated in a prayer pamphlet, similar to the idea contained in chain letters. Today’s gospel reading should help us dispel once and for all that this fantasy about God--- for it is only that, a fantasy. God’s involvement in our lives is quite different from that of a genie of the classic tale of the Arabian Nights. In our gospel passage today, we hear the words of Jesus in what is known as the Mission Discourse in all honesty and bluntness: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” clearly predicting that some of his followers will be killed or severely persecuted in the course of history. And he also adds that not a single sparrow falls to the ground without God being aware of it. But the sparrow falls… He also adds that even the hairs of our head are all counted. But as we all realize, receding hairline happens. In others words, God does not act like a genie, preventing bad things from happening. This straightforward statement from Jesus should dispel once and for all this genie-myth. God is not a magical genie and there is no magic lamp capable of conjuring Him. God does not magically remove suffering from our lives. But He gives us strength to bear it and to profit immensely from it. He did not protect His own Son from suffering, but through suffering He made Him strong enough to save the world.

Please pray for the sick: Brian McAuley, Gail Willis, Claire Oliphant, Mariah Lerner,

Harry Piet, Shirley Valentine, Betty Harrison, Gabriel Serpas, Jean Doucette, Kathy Oczkowski,

Barry Corns, Sheila Bachynski, Robert Jackson

And for those who have died: Fran Griep, Jairo Restrepo, Victor Shemanski,

Gregorio Legaspi, Arnold Thiele

Congratulations ...to Jack Foxcroft, Deacon Beke, Alexander Huda, and Emma Robinson baptized in the Lord this weekend ... to Hudson Makar who received his First Holy Communion ... to Rob Campbell and Cathie Quiros who were married on Saturday

Stampede Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will once again be serving up a Stampede Breakfast on Sunday, July 9 after the 8:30am and 10:00am Masses. All are welcome!

Come celebrate with us! The parish of St James is proud to announce that one of our long-standing parishioners, Lindsay Oliphant, has been accepted into religious life with the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia in Nashville, Tennessee and will be entering the convent on August 15, 2017. Fr. Edmund will bestow a special blessing on Lindsay at the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, August 5th. A light reception will follow in the hall.

Please Note: There will be no Cenacles or Rosaries before Mass during the month of July.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverently enough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.” (A Sunday bulletin admonition)

Brought together by a common goal—to re-echo the Blessed Mother’s URGENTappeal to the world for PRAYER and REPARATION—these two global apostolates tandem together to bring her Centennial Pilgrim Image to parishes in all countries in the year of her 100th Anniversary as Our Lady of Fatima (1917-2017). After the blessing of the Holy Father, one pilgrim image will be brought and accompanied by the missionaries of the AHFI to visit parishes and dioceses in every country per continent. Sacrament Registration *Baptism Guidelines In baptism, a person may only have one or two godparents (also called sponsors). In order for someone to be eligible as a godparent they must be chosen by the parents, have the ability and intention to fulfill the role, be at least 16 years of age, and be a confirmed Roman Catholic, who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist, and is leading a life in harmony with the Catholic Faith (including Marriage) and will be a good role model for the one being baptized, and be neither the father nor the mother of the child. If you are interested in baptizing your child, please contact the parish office. If you wish to baptize your child, a meeting with Fr. Edmund and a baptism workshop are required. Confirmation Registration—is now open to all students in grade 6 or higher who have been baptized and have received their First Eucharist. Early registration is preferred in order to prepare for the early September start. Registration forms are available at the SW entrance of the church and on the website. Please return completed form with a copy of your child’s baptism certificate if not baptized at St James. Classes will run on Sundays from 11:00-12:00 from September 10 to October 29th.
