Weekly Reflection: Pentecost Sunday – May 13, 2018
"Receive the Holy Spirit. Today is Pentecost Sunday or for many will be the Feast of the Holy Spirit. The meaning of the word Pentecost is ‘fiftieth’ – the number of days after resurrec-tion Sunday. After Jesus ascended into heaven he continued to live on in his apostles through the power of the Holy Spirit. The apostles did great work in spreading the faith not only to the Jews but throughout the whole world. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles worked great miracles and the infant Church grew quickly. That is why we consider this day as the birthday of the Church. The Gospel tells us how on the evening of His resurrection, Jesus "breathed on" His disciples "and said: 'Receive the Holy Spirit' “. The breath of Jesus brought the Holy Spirit and the gift of peace to the disciples who then were filled with fear and loss. Indeed, the breath of the Holy Spirit brings every blessing we need to carry out our mission. As the Spirit breathes on us, the divine life of God is passed on to us. We experience the empowering of the Spirit, captivating our hearts that it begins to beat only for God. Then the Spirt begins to breathe through us. His gifts become evident in the way we live and we are challenged to bless others with them - peace, love, forgiveness, unity and conversion. So today on the Feast of Pentecost, let us take a deep breath and "receive the Holy Spirit".
“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”
