FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY - (feast day Dec. 30)

Roman Catholic religious festival falling on the first Sunday after Christmas. Although major feast days dedicated to each member of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, an Joseph—also exist, the Feast of the Holy Family commemorates their life together, and the celebration focuses on religious family life. Because of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, a feast for the Holy Family has been observed by the Copts from early times. In Wester Christianity, however, a cult of veneration for the Holy Family as a group, rather than as individuals, did not arise until the 17th century and was not officially recognized until the feast day was formally instituted in 1921 under Pope Benedict XV. Originally celebrated on the Sunday af-ter Epiphany (January 6), the Feast of the Holy Family was moved to the Sunday after Christmas in 1969, bringing it within

The Twelve Days of Christmas In the Catholic Church, Christmas refers to a twelve-day period that starts with Christmas day. This is where the phrase “The 12 Days of Christmas” comes from. The world celebrates Christmas for twelve hours, but the Church celebrates it for twelve days because the gift of Christ is with us for twelve months of the year. When most people hear of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” they think of the song. This song had its origins as a teaching tool to instruct young people in the meaning and content of the Christian faith. From 1558 to 1829 Roman Catholics I England were not able to practice their faith openly so they had to find other ways to pass on their beliefs. The song, “The 12 Days of Christmas” is in a sense an allegory. Each of the items in the song represents something of a reli-gious significance. The hidden meaning of each gift was designed to help young Christians learn their faith. See how many you guessed right!

First day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…”true love” represents God and the ‘me’ who receives these

presents is the Christian. The Partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God.

Second day of Christmas...the Two Turtle Doves were the Old and New Testaments – another gift from God.

Third day of Christmas… the Three French Hens were faith, hope and love—the three gifts of the Spirit that abide.

Fourth Day of Christmas… the Four Calling Birds were the four Gospels that sing the song of salvation

through Jesus Christ.

Fifth Day of Christmas… the Five Golden Rings were the first 5 books of the Bile, also called the “Books of Moses.”

Sixth Day of Christmas… the Six Geese a-laying were the six day of creation.

Seventh Day of Christmas...the Seven Swans a-swimming were the seven gifts of the Holy Spir it (Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Fortitude, Counsel, Piety and Fear of the Lord)

Eighth Day of Christmas… the Eight Maids a-milking were the eight Beatitudes (recounted by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Blessed are the (1) poor in spirit, (2) meek and humble, (3) those who mourn, (4) those who hunger and thirst for justice (5), merciful, (6) pure of heart, (7) peacemakers, (8) persecuted on My ac-count)

Ninth Day of Christmas… the Nine Ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spir it. (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Trustfulness, Gentleness and Self-control)

Tenth Day of Christmas…Ten Lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

Eleventh Day of Christmas…the Eleven Pipers Piping were the 11 faithful disciples.

Twelfth Day of Christmas…Twelve Drummers Drumming were the twelve points of the Apostles’ Creed (1) I believe in God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, (2) Jesus Christ, His only Son, (3) Born of the Virgin Mary, (4) was Crucified, died and was buried, (5) 3rd day He rose from the dead, (6) is seated at the right hand of God, (7)He shall come to judge the living and the dead, (8) I believe in the Holy Spirit, (9) The Communion of Saints, (10) The forgiveness of sins, (11) the resurrection of the body, (12) Life everlasting.
