The Baptism of the Lord January 9, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we conclude the Christmas season, please join us for a wonderful evening of

celebration with the Christmas Cantata, “The Seven Noels”, today at 3:00pm in the main Church. This Cantata will weave together The First Nowell tune with original words to create a compelling frame for the beloved Christmas Story. Please come to the concert and support the music program here at STHY.

In the Christian tradition, baptism is not only for repentance but also an entry into the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and anointed as “Priest, prophet and king” to bear the light and life of God to the lost and the brokenhearted.

The Baptism of the Lord concludes the Christmas season in the Church. Living our baptismal vows means that our lives are not guided by our own preferences but by a deeper integration of Gospel values and characteristics. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is a day in which the Church remembers Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River at the hands of John the Baptist. It’s also a time for us in this day and age to recall our own baptism and what happened to us on that day.

From baptism, the entire life of the faithful proceeds, sustained by the Eucharist. It is in baptism that our sins are forgiven. It is in baptism that the original sin that we are born into is washed away. It is in baptism that we are called members of a body, the community of the Church. It is in baptism that we are given the great mandate of Christ. It is in baptism that we are saved!

I want to thank our entire ministry team who help bring to St. Hyacinth a wonderful Christmas liturgy. Without the Sacristans, Ushers, Greeters, Altar servers, Readers, Acolytes, Musicians and Choirs; we could not have a Christmas celebration in the Church. Thank you all and your efforts are appreciated by everyone. Special thanks to Mrs. Pamella Pitman, our Director of Liturgy and Music, for leading our beautiful liturgies this Christmas season.

I want to congratulate and offer my gratitude to everyone here at St. Hyacinth who participated in the 2021 DSF campaign. We have reached our assessed commitment goal of $80,000 for DSF 2021. Cardinal DiNardo has sent his congratulations and appreciation for our efforts with completing this goal. Thank you all for your generosity in completing our goal!!

One of our goals for 2022 is to increase the number of people using our electronic formats for the dissemination of information from our parish. We have our website: Sthyacinth.org, which is updated almost daily with information about the activities that go on in the parish. There is Flocknotes, which is our information delivery service for the parish, in which we email and or text information about the activities of the parish. Go to Flocknote.com/sthyhouston and join the group “Parishioners”. We are on Facebook, go and ‘like’ our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/StHyacinthchurch . Next we have our YouTube channel in which all of our Masses and special liturgies are available for view, so please go and subscribe.

God Bless, Fr. Reginald Samuels

Reading 1 Is 42:1-4, 6-7 Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness. Responsorial Psalm Ps 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10 R\ The Lord will bless his people with peace. Give to the LORD, you sons of God, give to the LORD glory and praise, Give to the LORD the glory due his name; adore the LORD in holy attire. R\ The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the LORD, over vast waters. The voice of the LORD is mighty; the voice of the LORD is majestic. R\ The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

The LORD is enthroned above the flood; the LORD is enthroned as king forever. R\ Reading 2 Acts 10:34-38 Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” . Gospel Lk 3:15-16, 21-22 The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Prayer in the Time of the Coronavirus

Comfort us, O Lord, for we are like your disci-ples on the storm tossed seas, unsettled by what

lies ahead. We turn to You, our Healer and Guide, to still our hearts in our time of need and hear our prayer: Heal those who are sick with

the coronavirus and protect the elderly and most vulnerable. Give strength to all who tend to our health and wisdom to researchers who work to-ward a cure. Open our eyes and hearts, as you

did during Hurricane Harvey, that we may look beyond our immediate needs to care for others who need help. Through the Holy Spirit, guide our leaders to make wise decisions for the wel-fare of all the people they serve. Grant eternal

rest to those who have died from the virus. May Mary, Our Mother, who has heard our pleas in

the storms of our lives, intercede to her Son, that we may find healing and a prompt end to this

illness. Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us.

Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, heal us.
