Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Wigan Robin Park. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at our new home, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. Since we were last here for the opening day 3-3 draw in dramatic fashion against Norton United we endured two losses on the road at first Squires Gate and then Winsford United on Saturday, two grounds on which we have poor recent records. The defeat at Squires Gate was a difficult one to take as we dominated the first quarter of an hour before conceding a soft penalty which was converted and then after this we proceeded to carry on where we left off but failed to net and thirty seconds after the restart we caught with a sucker punch effectively ending the contest and Gate added a third to rub salt into the wounds. Saturday’s trip to Winsford saw Town take the lead for the first time this season after a great strike from Kenny Cooper arrowed into the roof of the net. Winsford levelled soon afterwards but Town had some great chances to add to their tally and as often happens it is about small margins in football and seconds before the break the hosts netted to go into the break 2-1 up. Town were awarded a second half penalty which skipper for the afternoon Chris Williams stepped up to take but fired agonisingly wide of the left hand upright his first penalty miss for Town. There was to be no more scoring in the match

and Town fell to a second consecutive defeat. Our visitors this afternoon have had a turbulent off season with assistant manager Jay Foulds taking over at out landlords Ashton Athletic and seeing the movement of players along with their former stopper to Athletic. Wigan have so far yet to gain any return for thei r endeavours having lost to Winsford 1-3, Silsden 0-1 and Alsager 2-3 with the visitors netting an 88th minute winner.

We know that we will be in for a hard match this evening but at this early stage of the season it is important that we dig deep as both sides will be looking to record their first maximum return of the campaign. Finally, let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them on to a much needed first victory of the season. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Wigan Robin Park Football Club was founded in 2005 and started playing in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League, which is a feeder league for the North West Counties. All the players were local lads and in our first season we made good progress in the Lancashire Shield and Wigan Cup. The team reached the Lancashire Shield Quarter Final upstaged by BAE Systems Barrow on penalties and was sitting 7th in the table.

In addition the team was unlucky to lose in the semi-final of the Wigan Cup but their seasons efforts were rewarded with an appearance in the final of the Murray Shield. Unfortunately falling short on penalties to Walshaw Sports but the benchmark for things to come had been set. The inaugural season's achievements continued into the start of the 2006/07 season with a number of new players joining the club. The team moved into fourth in the table a position they maintained throughout the season. The Robins showed consistency in cup competitions as the team progressed to the semi-final stage losing narrowly to Winstanley St Aidens with a 1-0 score line. From that point the team then went on a remarkable league run which saw them go all the way to the end of the season undefeated. The aim of the club is to compete and the highest level and this was achieved with promotion to the Manchester Premier Division. If we were going to prepare correctly we needed to strengthen the club with the introduction of a reserve team for 2007/08 to compete successfully in the Manchester Premier League. Any Premier division at any level will be hard and a poor start to the campaign did not help, however once the team had become accustomed to the level and speed of the premier division the team then turned the corner and went on an excellent run which saw them lose just once in 24 games in all competitions resulting in final appearances in the Gilgryst Cup and the Lancashire Shield. With the season coming to an end a big push was needed, following another good run the team lose just once in 13 games and Wigan Robin Park claimed the Premier league title in their first attempt which many teams have tried to achieve for years. The next hurdle was to pass the high standards expected to compete at step 6 in the football league pyramid, this was confirmed by the North West Counties ground grading committee and Wigan Robin Park were accepted into the North West Counties First Division. In the inaugural season in the NWCFL good progress was made winning 7 drawing 3 and losing 2 in our opening 12 fixtures. The highlights being the first team to defeat title contenders AFC Liverpool in front of the highest home crowd of 603 at Valerie Park. The Vodkat Challenge Cup paired us against Premier division outfit Bacup Borough and would give us a taste and appetite for the Premier division having narrowly losing out after a reply. The team stayed in the top five most of the season including top spot on various occasion, eventually finishing in fifth position. Season 2009/10 proved to be a learning curve as the Robins finished the season in twelfth place. Although rocked by the departure of some senior players - to clubs further up the pyramid preseason - the club managed to bring in

. . . Wigan Robin Park FC some quality young players who started the season well. However a succession of injuries that decimated the squad saw the team slip to mid-table during the second half of the season. In 2010/11 the team started the season like a house on fire and were rewarded with a place towards the top of the table in the run up to Christmas. Unfortunately they were unable to continue this form and finished the season in eighth place. The Robins however did reach the quarter-finals of the First Division Trophy and League Challenge Cup. Meanwhile the reserves had a fine season finishing sixth in the North West Counties Reserve Division. Prior to the 2011/12 season Wigan Robin Park made important changes behind the scenes. Steve Halliwell the ex-chairman of Ashton Athletic took over the same role allowing manager John Neafcy to concentrate on the playing side of the club. Bearing this in mind the club has also strengthened this side of the club with stalwart Jay Foulds being promoted to assistant manager working alongside John, Craig Barton, Darren Mullen and Bob Howard. With senior players returning to the club, others being recruited and a very strong reserve team management and players being put in place the Robins targeted a very successful season and at the end of that term all the excellent planning and hard work behind the scenes brought unprecedented success to the football club. The first team managed by John Neafcy won the First Division Championship while the reserve team won the Reserve Division. Meanwhile a combined side managed by Assistant First Team Manager Jay Foulds and Reserve Team boss Ian Granite lifted the prestigious Wigan Cup beating local rivals Ashton Athletic in the final. In other cup competitions the club were runners up after an exciting final that went to extra time to league title rivals Norton United in the First Division Trophy while Evo Stick Northern Premier League giants Chorley defeated the Robins in the semi-final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy before a large crowd at the County Ground at Leyland. The momentous 2011/12 season was rounded off when the club picked up the Division One programme of the year award at the NWCFL's annual dinner. During the close season Ian Granite's success as Reserve Team Manager was duly noted and he moved onto St Helens Town as First Team Manager. This saw the club bringing in Jez Neild from Ashton Town as Reserve Team Manager with club stalwart Paul Vermiglio assisting. The Club targeted the 2012/13 season as one of consolidation as they plied their trade for the first time in the NWCFL Premier Division the highest level at which the club has competed in during their short history and finished a creditable 12 position. Meanwhile the committee continue to build the club on and off the pitch bringing in extra committee members, increasing attendances, developing the club's profile in the town, introducing a youth development scheme whilst continuing to enjoy their football in the North West Counties League.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division encounter with our near neighbours, friends and rivals Wigan Robin Park. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters enjoy their stay and along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Many thanks to tonight’s match sponsors Gemini Lettings (www.geminilettings.co.uk) who have offices in St Helens (Alexandra Park) and Warrington offering a comprehensive property management and lettings service which includes Mortgage and Insurance Advice, Property Care & Maintenance as well as a Solicitors Department. We are delighted that you are able to support us this season. It been a difficult start to the Premier Division season for both clubs - Town have earned a solitary point from their opening three encounters, This came on the opening day when two stoppage time goals earned the lads a 3-3 draw against Norton United. Last Tuesday a lacklustre performance at Squires Gate saw the home side run out comfortable 3-0 winners at a ground which has become a ‘bogey’ venue for Town. Saturday saw an improved performance but one which still ended in defeat at Winsford United. Kenny Cooper gave Town the lead when he slotted home from the edge of the box but the Blues his back with two goals before half time. Chris Williams should have levelled the scores early in the second half but his penalty failed to hit the target and neither team was able to add to the score line. Tonight’s visitors Wigan Robin Park, who managed to get a mention during ITV’s build up to the Community Shield game on Sunday, have also had a tough start with three opening defeats against Winsford (1-3), Silsden (1-0) and Alsager Town (2-3). The Robins have seen major changes during the summer with a large number of players departing as well as the loss of Jay Foulds, Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts who are now the management trio of our landlords Ashton Athletic. The competitive nature of the NWCFL has been evident in the opening week as only three teams across both divisions have maintained a 100% record! The club has announced plans to release a ‘Limited Edition’ replica shirt to mark the passing of legendary Club President Bert Trautmann. The retro design produced by the club's Kit & Leisurewear partner Umbro will see the commemorative shirt produced in the club's original blue and white stripes, and with the original town crest. The inscription "Bert Trautmann 1923 – 2013" will also be embroidered into the shirt. The shirt can be purchased through the club and will be priced at £25, with all profits being donated to the club's official charity partner Hearts & Goals. Orders can be taken with immediate effect, and anyone interested in ordering a shirt should contact Town Commercial Manager Darryl Picton. It’s FA Cup day this Saturday and by a quirk of the draw we entertain our landlords Ashton Athletic - let’s hope for a good gate and an excellent game as both sides battle it out for some much needed prize money and a place in the next round. Don’t forget our monthly fundraiser - 500 Club Draw - starts again this month with a £1 securing you a chance of winning one of three prizes (£150, £75 and £25). Enjoy the game John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

Last gasp fight-back earns Town a share of the points St Helens Town 3-3 Norton United Saturday 3rd August 2013, North West Counties Football League Premier Division

St. Helens Town opened their 2013/14 North West Counties Premier League campaign with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Norton United on Saturday. Playing their first game at Brocstedes Park – home of Ashton Athletic – they extended their unbeaten run to 6 matches, the first of which was a 3-1 win over Norton in April, but their opponents fielded a much stronger combination this time round. Indeed, Norton looked to have the game sewn up when they went three up after 41 minutes. However, Town came out fired up in the second half, initially to stem the tide, before gaining a foothold and going on to snatch a point in the most controversial circumstances in the game’s closing stages. Town opened brightly, fielding six debutants, including on-loan Nantwich goalkeeper Josh Clark, but he had no chance with Norton’s opener, a speculative shot from 40 yards out hitting the bar, leaving Brown

to nod in past the stranded keeper after 11 minutes. Six minutes later, it was 2-0 to the visitors, when a 25-yard inch-perfect cross found the head of Smith who beat Clark at the far post. Worse was to come as Talbot’s diving header from another long cross again beat Clark and Norton were apparently coasting to victory. Just before half-time, Town produced their first shot on target, a rather tame effort from Kenny Cooper, who found the goalie well placed. Into the second half and most of the home team’s followers thought it was only a matter of how many Norton would win by, but Town had other ideas. It may have been the case that the Potteries side eased off, but the half-time team talk, coupled with the introduction of the experienced Ste Edwards turned the game on its head. Firstly, the home defence began to snuff out Norton’s attack, reducing the visitors to shots from far out, but later, as the half wore on, the new forward line-up, bolstered by Edwards, started to create chances of their own. Edwards had his first chance after 70 minutes and soon afterwards, Stephen Milne was tripped in the box, as Town surged forward again. Full-back Winkle was dismissed and Chris Williams hammered home the penalty kick to reduce the arrears. As the game entered its closing stages, Edwards again hit a rasping shot which would have found the net, had it not met a defender’s head on the way. From the corner kick, Edwards produced a powerful bullet header, which gave Hemmings no chance in the Norton goal and, with only added time to play, Town had the chance to claim a point. However, it came in controversial circumstances. Piling several men into the Norton box, it was more like pin-ball, as shots rained in from all angles. Finally, Adam Owens beat the keeper but, from behind the goal, the ball had not crossed the line before a defender hoofed it clear. Amazingly, however, the unsighted referee looked to his assistant who gave the nod and the goal was given. Hardly had the Norton protests died down, the game re-started and referee Abson blew the final whistle.

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last

season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

. . . of St Helens Town AFC

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators).

The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story.

. . . Our Charity Partner “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. “The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can

strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny poss ib l e for the campaign.” Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals

campaign as their official charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. “We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a Question of Sport tournament evening on Saturday 24th August and a Race Night on Friday 18th October. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at [email protected] Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

Getting back to Business . . . Its been a great summer of activity for St Helens Town with changes behind the scenes to the committee and management structure, new sponsors coming in and our link up with our charity partner Hearts and Goals. On the pitch the various management teams have worked hard developing the squads and training hard for what will hopefully be a productive season, and its great to finally get the competitive action under way. Tonight we welcome our near neighbours Wigan Robin Park to Brocstedes for what should hopefully be an exciting encounter, our visitors too having had a summer of many changes. But whilst its great to be out and about taking in games, as Commercial Manager the hard work still goes on at my desk as we strive to continue to develop the clubs brand and commercial interests. Amongst the thousands of emails and phone calls that have been made in the period since the end of last season, are those to our new charity partner Hearts and Goals. Having agreed to become a fundraising partner for the charity we are working on a number of for events throughout the season to raise vital funds for the placement of AEDs in the community. Our events list is taking shape and will kick off with our Question Of Sport quiz night evening at our base at Windleshaw at the end of August which should be a fun night for all the players, staff and our supporters , followed in October with a Race Night at the same venue. The Christmas period will see the first of our bigger events with a Comedy & Curry Night on December 7th again at Windleshaw, The night will see two of the funniest local comedians Jimmy O and Russ Bland and a great comedy magic act David Alnwick take to the floor to entertain all in what will be a great night’s entertainment backed up with great food from our trusted local curry house Balti Spice. It should be a great night and anyone interested in coming along can purchase tickets from myself at £15 each. The second half of our season will see the announcement of further events and our seasons activities will culminate with a Sporting Dinner and Sports Auction which should be one of the standout events in this years NWCFL calendar. Plans are still in development and a venue still to be confirmed but a number of high profile guests should be in attendance for what will be a night to remember. The auction of Sporting memorabilia on the evening will be the final fundraising event for our charity partner and I would like to thank the sports stars who have so far contributed to the event with donations for the auction. In no particular order we extend our thanks to Sir Steven Redgrave, Sir Chris Hoy, Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Jamie Carragher, Wigan Athletic FC, Bolton Wanderers FC, Liverpool FC and Celtic FC. Enjoy the game this evening, and please keep an eye out for more announcements about our fundraising events as the season progresses. Warm regards Darryl Picton – Commercial Manager

Match Report & Photos . . . Seaside defeat for Town Squires Gate 3-0 St Helens Town Tuesday 6th August 2013, North West Counties Football League Premier Division

St. Helens Town slipped to their first defeat in seven games on Tuesday when they went down 3-0 at Squires Gate. They have developed a habit over recent seasons of outplaying their Blackpool hosts only to lose through defensive mistakes and, once again, this was the story of the match. Gate finished in the relegation places last term but, like Town the previous season, earned a reprieve due to other clubs’ misfortunes and, just as they did in their last meeting at School Road, Squires Gate strolled to a 3-0 victory. Town are still trying to find their best combination up front and Saturday’s saviour Ste Edwards started the game on Tuesday, alongside youngster Steve Milne. Both caused the home team early problems, but the good work was undone when on-loan keeper Josh Clark conceded a needless penalty at the edge of his box after 17 minutes and Jack Hindle made no mistake from the spot to fire Gate ahead, a lead they barely deserved. Town fought back

and Shaun Judge went close with a piledriver from 30 yards a few minutes later. Edwards then set up Cole Ashton on 27 minutes, but the midfielder was off balance as he placed his shot wide of the home goal. As half-time approached, Squires Gate began to exert pressure and St. Helens were grateful to clear two shots off the line just before the interval. Hope turned to despair within 30 seconds of the restart as a long ball bounced awkwardly between two Town defenders and Jamie McQuillan reacted quickly to steer the ball past Clark to stretch the

home side’s lead. St. Helens struggled from that point on. Edwards was replaced by Ste Bowen after 55 minutes and the latter was sent clear by Ashton’s pass but, with the home keeper struggling to cover his line, Bowen’s contact was poor and Fletcher had no trouble making an easy save. Squires Gate wrapped up the points on the hour when another defensive lapse let in Ben Fishwick for the final goal. Coming back from three down for the second time in three days was always going to be a difficult proposition and with returning captain Lee Crompton having to leave the field before the end, defensive frailties will have to be ironed out if lessons are to be learned and progress made.
