Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Glossop North End. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. Tuesday’s game here against Stone was really disappointing as our Achilles heel of late our lack of killer instinct in front of goal was plain for all to see again as we dominated the first half but only netted once and were made to pay in a second period that our visitors did a lot better in. After completing our 1-1 draw with Stone Dominoes here we have now completed a third of our matches in this seasons league campaign and so now is as good a time as any to review the first third of the season. We started off like a house on fire and after four matches were top of the pile having secured three victories over Ramsbottom & AFC Liverpool here and also away at Colne. Sandwiched in between we had disappointingly drawn 0-0 at Atherton LR, in what was an early demonstration of our wastefulness in front of goal. LR then visited us in the FA Cup and duly dispatched us 2-0 before the run defeats started with a reverse at Stone before a run of three home defeats against Flixton, Bootle and Winsford United. We then continued on with a large road trip start with a heavy loss at Squires Gate before a single goal loss at Flixton. We broke the run with a 4-2 Liverpool Senior Cup win “away” at Ashton Town and exited the FA Vase with a 1-0 reverse at Squires Gate before another 1-0 loss in the league this time at Congleton Town prior to Tuesday’s disappointing draw with Stone. This afternoon’s contest will be a challenging one for Jimmy and the lads and we will need to be more clinical in front of goal if we are to get any return against our visitors this afternoon. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto a much needed victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Glossop North End were founded in 1886 and began by playing friendly amateur matches. They played at a variety of grounds, including Pygrove, Silk Street, Water lane, and Cemetery Road before settling on North Road. The club joined the North Cheshire League in 1890, before moving to the Combination in 1894, becoming a professional club and introducing professional players. The club moved again to the Midland League in 1896 before being elected after their third application, to the Second Division of the Football League in 1898. The club won promotion in that first season, after finishing second to Manchester City, (and finishing

above Newton Heath, who of course went on to become Manchester United). In the Summer of 1899, the club changed it’s name to Glossop FC. Sadly though, the glory didn’t last, as The Hillsmen were relegated after just the one season. They struggled to just 4 victories and finishing bottom, were relegated back to the Second Division. However they did manage a 1-0 victory at home to then Champions Aston Villa and beat another future European Champion side when they thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0. In 1908/09, the club recorded their best FA Cup performance when they reached the quarter finals, before losing in a replay at Bristol City. However, the adventure had been financed by cotton magnate Samuel Hill-Wood, and with that industry in terminal decline (at least as far as Glossop and surrounding area was concerned) he upped sticks to London, investing his money in, and becoming chairman of Arsenal, who were elected to the top division from where they have never been relegated. Indeed his great grandson , Peter Hill-Wood is still chairman there. The club then struggled for several seasons (though it did manage it’s record attendance of 10,736 against former namesakes Preston North End in the FA Cup during the 1913-14 season), finishing bottom at the end of the 1914-15 season. With the onset of World War 1 the Football League closed down until the start of the 1919-20 season, by which time Glossop had dropped out of the League, and started the 1919-20 season in the Lancashire Combination, sharing a ground with Northern Nomads for several years. Although no longer in the illustrious big league, Glossop endured thanks to Oswald Partington MP; a former captain in the 1890’s, who reformed the club after the Great War. To this day Glossop are often cited as the smallest town in England to be home to a Football League top Division Club. After just one season, the club dropped out of the Lancashire combination and into the Manchester League of which they were champions in 1927/28, and also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Glossop again ceased playing during the Second World War and then rejoined the Manchester League. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 Glossop moved from their original League ground at North Road to the present ground; the ‘Arthur Goldthorpe Stadium’, better known as Surrey Street. Goldthorpe was a local Estate Agent who made a donation of £700 to build the stadium – over half the cost. A crowd of 2000 attended the official opening of the ground, and the improved facilities meant the club were accepted back into the Lancashire Combination. The Club almost went out of business in the 1990/91 season when the then Chairman sold the ground to the local Council and left the Club with huge debts thanks to criminal activity. The new Board of Directors took over in January 1991 and reconstituted the Club, reverting to the original North End name which had been abandoned back in 1898. (the name incidentally, was homage to Preston, who Samuel Hill-Wood had greatly admired). During the summer of 1992, floodlights were erected by volunteer supporters, with many of materials being donated by the local community in order that the ground could meet first division standards. In 1997 Glossop North End AFC won the Manchester Premier Cup under the guidance of Manager Syd White,

. . . Glossop North End Football Club beating Trafford FC at Old Trafford, and retained the title in 1998 with a 1-0 victory over Radcliffe Borough at Maine Road. When Chairman of the club in the 2000-01 season, Syd White stepped in temporarily following Mickey Boyle’s departure and again led the team to silverware, with the club winning the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history, beating Glapwell in a two-legged final. Chris Nicholson was then appointed as manager in the summer of 2001 and instilled a superb spirit at the club again, following a few unsettled seasons, where final league positions were on a downward slide, and relegation battles had been faced before safety was secured. After two seasons, Chris had reversed this trend; the 2004/2005 season was the best for 7 years, finishing 13th, reaching a semi-final and producing the league’s highest scorer with 40 goals, Garry Kharas. Chris and assistant Steve Young introduced a number of young players from the successful league/cup winning reserve side of 2003-04 in the years that followed, and in 2006-2007 North Endhad their youngest squad for many years, and finished a creditable 9th in the NWCFL, the highest position achieved by Chris in his 6 seasons. When Nicholson announced his intention to step down at the end of the 2006/2007 season, due to his impending emigration to Australia, the club advertised the vacancy, and despite fierce competition for the job, Assistant Manager Steve Young was appointed for the start of the 2007/08 season. Steve’s appointment, along with that of his vital right hand man Terry Hincks, has seen on-field results improve dramatically, with the team finishing 7th and 5th in their two seasons at the helm.. The biggest day in the history of the club came in 2008/09, when they embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away. This forms part of a more dramatic overhaul that has seen a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new clubhouse and a new covered standing area. With a new manager in Paul Colgan, special events to mark their 125th anniversary, and playing in a kit that replicates that the 1899/1900 side played in, there is a real sense of optimism about 2011/12 and beyond at Surrey Street at the moment. Everyone is hopeful that Glossop North End can now plan for an exciting future as a club at the heart of the community.

A word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and a warm welcome to today’s home NWCFL game against our friends from Derbyshire Glossop North End FC. Let’s hope everyone connected to the club have enjoyed a safe journey getting here and enjoy a great game of football before making their way back home. The last few weeks have seen massive upheavals to the playing squad and the team that starts today will bear very little resemblance to the one that started the season against Ramsbottom United on the opening day of the season. I feel though that we are just starting to find our feet again and the lads are playing as a team once more, we just need to keep working hard and I am sure the results will start to pick up for us. Tuesday’s game against Stone Dominoes saw us create a host of chances in the first half and only take one of them, something that we ultimately paid the price for in the second half when Stone equalised leaving us to settle for a point when three were there for the taking. On to today’s game and today’s opponents, Glossop will provide a stern test for us and one that I am hoping that the players will rise to and meet full on. Although we were disappointed only to draw on Tuesday night we really need to build on that and try and kick on from here. We are now starting to get players back from injury and holidays and the squad is looking better by the day, so the time has come were we need to be competing with the top teams and today is the perfect time to start against one of the top sides who also like to play football. Enjoy the game Jimmy McBride

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West counties Football League Premier Division against our friends and rivals from Glossop North End FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials Messrs Hayes, Connett and Frazer who have travelled across from Manchester. Tuesday evening saw Town entertain Stone Dominoes here at Ashton Town and looking for revenge for the 2-1 defeat at Stone in late August. Despite a completely dominant first half in which we could have been 5 goals to the good we only led by a solitary Andy Ledger strike. The second half saw our visitors improve and Town failed to build on their first half exploits eventually allowing Stone to level and with ‘their tails up’ they could have nicked it in the dying seconds! While disappointed we failed to get three points I am hopeful that things are moving in the right direction with the squad now starting to settle after a month or so of significant upheaval with player departures, injuries, work commitments, holidays, etc. In recent games we have failed to score when chances have been created and ultimately suffered the consequences with a 1-0 defeat at Congleton last Saturday. Prior to that Town had been dumped out of the FA Vase courtesy of a 1-0 reverse at Squires Gate in another tight game. However, our recent victory over Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup has been rewarded with a home draw against Everton on a date yet to be arranged (before the end of November). It will hopefully provide a great opportunity for the club to generate some much needed income - as a consequence we are on the look out for a match and match ball sponsor for the game as well as anyone wishing to take an advert in the commemorative programme we are planning. Today’s game will prove another tough encounter as Glossop’s midweek 5-0 victory over previously unbeaten Runcorn Linnets shows what excellent form they are in! Glossop, who have won four of their last five games, currently lie in sixth placed but have games in hand over the clubs above them.

Congratulations to last weeks 100 Club winners - Ian Frazer (£130), Jeff Voller (£50) and Mike Burns (£20) - if you like to join the monthly draw please see Andy Langley at today’s game - it’s a great way to support the club. Enjoy the game and don’t forget to join us in the club for the usual post-match debate and the St Helens Town Man of the Match presentation and our Player of the Month award for September. Next up Town travel to early league pacesetters Barnoldswick Town on Saturday 15th October, kick off 3.00pm. Our next planned home fixture is a week later when AFC Blackpool make the trip south to Edge Green Street.

Match Report v Stone Dominoes . . . Tuesday 4th October 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-1 Stone Dominoes Town’s lack of killer instinct in front of goal cost them dear again as they dropped points against Stone Dominoes despite dominating the first half and creating enough chances to have won the game during the opening half hour. The hosts dominated the early exchanges and the only surprise was that it took until the 13th minute for the Stone goal to be threatened when a throw in was taken by Michael Kavanagh to Ian Roby and he gave it back to the thrower who sent a dangerous cross into the area which had to be cleared by James Curley with Andy Olden in attendance. A couple of minutes later Roby linked with Shaun McKeegan finding him on the right hand edge of the area and his cross come shot blazed just wide of the left hand upright. Further Town pressure saw David Berry advance down the left and send a dangerous cross into the box which just evaded the slide of Andy Ledger on the far post. Next up saw Andy Olsen receive the ball with his back to goal and his turn and shot from just outside the box went just over the bar. Town broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark when a fine move saw Berry play an one-two with Che Morgan on the left wing with the former sending a pin-point cross into the box which found Olsen whose shot was blocked and broke to Ledger who made no mistake firing home from 12 yards out. Olsen could have doubled the lead five minutes later when he latched onto a defensive error and got into the box where he unleashed an effort which the visiting stopper just managed to tip over the bar. A short corner saw Town rattle the crossbar Berry linked with Roby with Berry receiving the ball back and sending a cross come shot into the area which beat the keeper cannoning off the bar and the loose ball was eventually cleared. Stone almost levelled just before the interval when Steve Allen took advantage of a rare error by Michael Burns but he mishit his shot when he seemed certain to score. Quickly at the other end Olsen latched onto a loose ball and appeared to have fired home but the ball took a late bobble off the surface and ended just the wrong side of the left hand upright. In added on time Town had keeper Nick Jackson to thank for keeping the advantage going into the interval as Ashley Miller cut inside from the left and fire a shot from an acute angle which Jackson kept out with an excellent reflex save with the rebound being cleared. The second half saw the visitors buoyed by the fact that the game was not well beyond them came back into the game and started to threaten the Town goal. Allen blazed over the bar when well placed and Chris Smith had an effort tipped wide by Jackson. Allen threatened again when he got down the left and cut inside before send in a cross/shot that was cleared off the line by Andy Flood. The pressure told on 64 minutes when Mike Marren beat his defender on the right of the area and sent the ball towards the unmarked Allen on the far post who applied the simple finish to level matters. Town almost regained the lead a couple of minutes later when a deep cross from Morgan was misjudged by the visiting stopper and found Roby on the far post but his could only direct his header at the recovering keeper when anything either side of him would have been a goal. Moments later Morgan again delivered from the left and again found Roby on the right but his effort across goal went wide of the left hand post. The hosts felt they were denied a blatant penalty on 81 minutes when Ledger got into the box and unleashed an effort which struck the outstretched hand of defender Gareth Mayer but the referee waved play on. In the closing stages Stone spurned three golden chances to earn the victory. The first saw a counter culminate with Gareth Rowe delivering from the left of the area towards Dwayne Spencer on the far post and he somehow failed to hit the target when it seemed easier to score. Deep in added on time a long ball into the Town box was spilt by Jackson in heavy traffic but he recovered well to push Smith’s shot from the edge of the box around the post from the resultant corner Mayer was found on the far post but he could only send his unmarked header wide of the left hand upright and the spoils were shared. St Helens Town; Jackson, Kavanagh, Morgan, Frazer, Flood, Burns, Roby, McKeegan (C), Olsen (Addison 78), Ledger, Berry (Gardner 74). Subs Not Used; Bold, Corrie, Hansard.

Stone Dominoes; Weston, Villers, Shenton, Lowndes, Mayer, Curley (C), Southern (Rowe 85), Smith, Allen, Marren (Spence 80), Miller. Sub Not Used; White.

NWCF League News . . . Everyone at Congleton Town is now preparing for the start of a new era, following Ken Mead’s decision to step down as Secretary and Programme Editor. Last Saturday’s game against St Helens Town at Booth Street was Ken’s last in his long accustomed roles, and while he will continue to follow the club, his duties have now been taken over by new Secretary Ken Stephenson and new Programme Editor Paul Brindley. Congleton Chairman Peter Evans said: “Ken’s contribution to the club has been immense in the 17 years he has been at the club. Dave Wilcock, our groundsman, remarked the other day that Congleton Town FC, as we have all known it in the past and see it today, would not exist without all the hard work knowledge and expertise that Ken has put in. Ken is the type of person that never misses a meeting, no matter where these have been held, and believe me I know because he always talked me into going with him. His knowledge of the rules in the various competitions is amazing, and he seems to carry whole rule books around in his head. Travelling to away games, his car boot is always full of kit, water bottles, strips and first aid equipment. Any players who hadn’t got transport on the day would often jump into the “team bus” as his car is known. Ken and I always said we would leave together, but one thing we have also said is that when we do leave we would like to leave the club in a better and stronger position than when we came in, and Ken has certainly done that. The good news is that we won’t be losing touch with him completely as he will still continue to attend as many games as he can, and we are planning on giving him an ambassadorial role at the club. Apart from his knowledge of the game, he knows lots of people throughout the league, from opposition officials, players, supporters and match officials, and we want to use that experience for the benefit of the club”. For Ken himself, he can look back on a busy 17 years, which as he recalled began one September afternoon in 1994. “I asked a simple question of the then Chairman Cliff Salt – do you need any help at the club? By November I was Treasurer and that was the start of it all. Over the years I have held that role for pretty much all of the time, but in addition have performed the roles of Commercial Manager, part groundsman, Programme Editor and in latter years Secretary. A long time ago it was clear to me that my simple objective was to merely leave the club in a better state than it was when I joined. Back in 1994, the club was in debt, the pitch was bare, the pitch perimeter was posts and rails, and the clubhouse was never in danger of burning down because it was too wet. Floodlights made white shirts yellow, showers were in a poor state and the gas boiler ready to be condemned. Now we are sound enough financially, have a decent playing surface, good pitch perimeter walling, good clubhouse facilities, tarmac car park, new club entrance and a number of other additional features. That has been the culmination of many years hard work by many people at the club and quite a few are still here. I have chosen to leave at this juncture because the time is right for me. The club is in good hands and is continuing to move forward. Unless a club goes out of business, everyone leaves for personal reasons, and so it is for me. There is nothing sinister in the timing, especially within the football club. I have other things I need to be doing and there really isn’t much time left after work and club business matters. I will always have a place in my heart for the club and will be at as many games as I can, but I can turn up later and leave earlier with no responsibilities to take home – just enjoy the football. Although it was generally known I was stepping down, not everyone knew that Saturday would be my last game, and I would like to thank everyone who has sent good wishes. I’d particularly like to thank League Registration Secretary John Cowley for coming down to see me on Saturday at the St Helens Town game, and also to a number of our former players who are now at Alsager Town. Their management team of John Brown and Stuart Heaps and around seven of the present Alsager squad played at Congleton in the past, and before our game against them they presented me with a card and a bottle of wine, wishing me all the best. It was a very nice gesture and one that I greatly appreciated. “But now the baton is handed over to the next generation of budding club officials and I wish them all the best”.

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review 5 . . . Blast from the past . . . ST. HELENS TOWN v CONGLETON – FA Cup 1st QR, Saturday, 15th Sept 1984 Town increased the size of their programme for the 1984/85 season, to three A4 sheets folded in the middle, with a pre-printed blue and white cover, with club details across the middle and adverts for Fisher Street Motors at the top and Boundary Garage and Sutton Tyre Co. at the bottom. “Talk of the Town” inside mentioned the new club strip, sponsored by CMA Cycles of Chain Lane, Blackbrook. There was also mention of one Mike Wilson, a spectator, who followed the FA Cup rounds right through to the Final and who always started off at St. Helens Town. Town beat Congleton 2-0 in the game, only to go out at Formby in the next round. The League table, printed on page 9, showed Town fourth from bottom in the North West Counties League Division One (then in its third season) with a win and two draws from 7 games, 8 goals for and 14 against.

Congleton were immediately behind Town with a win and a draw from 8 games. Winsford United and Curzon Ashton were locked together at the top of the table with Glossop and Penrith at the other end. Accrington Stanley, now in League Two, were just ahead of Town.

On a level playing field . . . STONE DOMINOES v ST. HELENS TOWN – Tuesday, 23rd August 2011 Stone’s programme is a rather basic production, albeit priced at just £1. The colourful cover featured a couple of stickers glued over the old Vodkat League logo and the ground’s previous name and the contents included standard club histories for both teams, fixtures and results from the North West Counties League, results charts for both divisions, up-to-date league tables and a rather amusing article about league committeeman Geoff Wilkinson who had gone to Nelson’s game with Daisy Hill and finished up standing in as reserve official after the Assistant injured his leg. Where would some clubs be without the league’s comprehensive output of statistics and standard articles and items of interest? Still, one should not criticise too much – at least there was a programme and, for the interested spectator (only 54 were present), all the

information he or she might need was in there and it was up to date. One word of advice if you haven’t been to Stone before – get there early, especially for midweek games as very few programmes are printed.

They’re in a different league . . . THACKLEY v SELBY TOWN – NCEL, Premier Division, Tuesday, 6th Sept 2011 Having journeyed over to Bradford on a Tuesday evening, I was most impressed with the ground and set-up at Dennyfield, just off the Leeds Road, about 11 miles further on than Silsden. In common with all of the Yorkshire grounds visited by Town over the last few years – Parkgate, Nostell Miners and Winterton – the facilities were very tidy and well-presented, probably grant aided, but nonetheless impressive. Impressive too was the programme, priced at a bargain £1. It ran to 44 pages, including the colour cover and there was even a list of contents. There were comprehensive match reports (including one from the previous Sunday’s FA Cup defeat at Wakefield), pen pictures of both sides with individual photographs and full statistical analyses of first team, reserves and the under-19s. This is probably the best programme I have seen at non-league

level so far this season. Did you know? Thackley and St. Helens Town share the same proud record as being the only ever-presents in the top flight of their respective leagues since their inception in 1982. For the record, Thackley led 5-0 at half-time and that’s the way the score remained until the end.
