Talk of the Town Good Evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against Glossop North End. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

First may I take this opportunity to congratulate our visitors Glossop North End on their progress to the Semi Finals of the FA Vase on Saturday after securing their berth in extra time with a 3-1 win over Shaw Lane Aquaforce who had seen off Ashton Athletic and Runcorn Linnets in earlier rounds they now face one of the longest trips you could find in a national competition as they take the trip to Cornwall this Saturday for the first leg against AFC St Austell prior to welcoming them back to Surrey Street the following Saturday. We wish the Hillmen all the best in their attempt to return to Wembley for the first time since their 2009 defeat at hands of a Whitley Bay outfit who were in the middle of a spell of domination in the competition. As a result of Glossop’s advancement in the FA Vase our away league contest at Surrey Street which was scheduled for Saturday (21st March) will now need to be rearranged which may be a bit of an ask for the league fixture secretary as Glossop have what can only be described as a “busy” schedule between now and the end of the season! Onto matters closer to home and we have suffered three defeats since we lost hosted a game here at Brocstedes Park which started when we hosted Nelson here 10 days ago. We started the contest well with Marcus Perry carving out two good openings which came to nothing and a corner just evaded the lunge of debutant Christian Banasko. A controversial penalty was converted by Keiran Walmsley and after the break Nelson scored direct from a corner and Peter Wright made it 3-0 before a spell three goals in five minutes late on followed by a Town consolation in added on time from Frazer Findlay saw the final score of 1-6. We then visited 1874 Northwich last Tuesday and they gave us a lesson in taking your chances as we again had some good spells and created some good openings which we didn’t take and ended up on the wrong end of a 5-0 reverse. Saturday saw us take the trip to Gorton as we visited Abbey Hey. The staring line up showed six debutants and again we started off brightly and had all the chances in the opening 25 minutes with the most notable being Ryan Taylor steering a shot just over the bar and an effort from Fraser Derby taking a deflection before being tipped over the bar by the home stopper. We were then caught by a classic sucker punch as a fine move saw a left wing cross swept home by Brandon Zibaka and after the interval goals from Justin Pickering and a second from Zibaka made it 3-0 to the hosts before Aaron Morris fired into the roof of the net to give Town a glimmer of hope but it was too little too late. We know that we will be in for a challenging contest this evening against a Glossop outfit who are still challenging on three fronts and will be looking to capitalise on Runcorn Linnets slip up at AFC Liverpool on Saturday as they fought out a 0-0 draw. The Hillmen have four league contests including

this evening prior to getting back to FA Vase action. We will need to be on top of our game if we are take anything from this contest and ease the threat of relegation which is looming largely over our shoulder. In Town Today It’s a classic quiz question - Which is the smallest town in England to have

been the home of a top division football club? The answer is Glossop. Of course, it’s a long time since that 1899/1900 season but the Hillmen (or Hillsmen, as they were known back then, in honour of owner Sir Samuel Hill-Wood) supporters never forget the proud history of the club. However more recently they were given some more moments that they will talk about in the town for years to come and are hopeful of providing a few more. Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches. They entered the North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced professional players in 1894. Their Chairman and benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who later left to become Chairman of

Woolwich Arsenal. In 1898, on their third application, they were admitted to the Football League. In their first season, by finishing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion to the Football League Division 1. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-0 result against Nottingham Forest. Glossop played in League Division 2 until the end of the 1914/15 season, In 1908/09 reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay. They ceased playing during the latter part of the First World War but were reformed by Oswald Partington MP, who had been club captain in the 1890’s.

Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of which they were champions in 1927/28. They also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at Surrey Street. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire Leagues before becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982. Glossop have spent most of the time in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against

relegation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only the hard work of board members and supporters kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime. There was a little success â€” the club was Manchester Premier Cup winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01. More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008/09 saw the biggest day in the history of the club after Steve Young & Terry Hincks’ side embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd

Glossop North End minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way.

Whilst the final saw a disappointing result - losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay the run awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away. This forms part of a more dramatic overhaul that has seen a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new clubhouse and a new covered standing area. Ground grading for the league above has been achieved too and the club feels it is ready to progress up the pyramid. Manager Chris Willcock is the man appointed to the task, and he had a very exciting first season in charge in 2013-14, taking the club to a 3rd place finish – it’s highest in the NWCFL – and a Derbyshire Senior Cup Final. At the start of the season optimism was high for what could be achieved in the 2014-15 term with everyone at the club hopeful that Glossop North End could realise plans for an exciting future as a club at the heart of the community. The term has not been a disappointment with Glossop and Runcorn Linnets battling it out at the top of the division for the NWCL, Premier

Division title and also looking forward to a Challenge Cup Semi Final with Bootle and a two legged FA Vase Final against St Austell in the coming weeks it could be a record breaking season for the Hillmen!

From the Chair Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with Glossop North End. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining evening. Firstly let me congratulate the Glossop players and staff as well as Chairman

Dave Atkinson and his committee on their fantastic FA Vase progress which last Saturday saw them reach the semi-finals with a 3-1 extra time replay victory over Shaw Lane Aquaforce. We’ve included the match report and a number of photos from the excellent ones on offer from Jim Lockwood. We wish them every success when they take on AFC St Austell for a place a Wembley. Tonight sees two teams battling at opposite ends of the league table - our visitors are chasing league leaders Runcorn Linnets and if they can make their eight game advantage count they will go very close. They are also looking to progress in the MEN United Cup where they met Bootle in the semi-final early next month. For Town our dismal form continued on Saturday with a 3-1 loss at Abbey Hey and with just seven games remaining the chase to avoid a relegation spot is definitely on. Saturday saw six new faces start and with a few players hopefully returning from injury we are hoping for an improvement on the pitch. There’s plenty of points to play for and we have to have show some faith in the lads and give them our

support. We have some tough games to come but so have the other teams around us and we need to battle to the end we are to maintain our ever-present North West Counties League top flight status. We will meet Glossop once again at Surrey Street before the season ends (return league fixture) - the original scheduled date is now the FA Vase semi-final first leg. This Saturday we host in-form Congleton Town who have recorded six wins on the bounce and then it looks likely we will have a 17 day period without a game before we host Silsden on Tuesday 31st March. Congratulations to Nick Matthews and his U17s on reaching the final of the South Lancs Counties League Wilf Hickson Memorial Cup where they will meet Southport U17s - date to be confirmed. Glossop NE in the Vase Two goals in extra time from Jason Carey helped Glossop North End to clinch a 3-1 win over Shaw Lane Aquaforce and a place in the semi-finals of the FA Vase. The Hillmens' Wembley dreams looked dead and buried when visiting striker Joe Thornton put the Northern Counties East League side ahead with just 13 minutes of the game remaining. But a dramatic late equaliser from substitute Sam Hind - a member of the Glossop squad who reached the final in 2009 - took the game into extra time, and Carey's two goals ensured that the Hillmen now face St Austell of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League in the two legged semi-final on the 21st and 28th March. The game kicked off in fine sunny conditions, but both sides took time to settle into the game, and the first clear chance of the game arrived at the midway point of the first half, when a good build up down the Glossop left set up a chance for Lee Blackshaw, who was denied by a smart save from Shaw Lane keeper Ben Gathercole at his near post. Five minutes later Shaw Lane created their first chance, when a long ball forward was diverted by Eddie Moran into the path of Joe Thornton, who turned a defender and curled a shot just wide of the far post from the edge of the box. That effort sparked the visitors into life, and they proceded to create two more chances in as many minutes, as the game approached the half hour mark. Andrew Fox squandered a great opportunity when he miskicked from eight yards after latching on to a quickly taken free kick, and then Anton Foster fired wide from a good position when he had time and space to find the target. But Glossop hit back and enjoyed the better of the closing stages

of the first half, with Lee Blackshaw again coming close with a shot into the side netting. The second half began in lively fashion, with Glossop forcing four corners in succession, and from the last of those Martin Parker powered a firm header just over the crossbar. Shaw Lane's Shane Kelsey spurned a chance when he headed well over from a Joe Thornton cross, and as the game approached the hour mark, a ball into the box was headed out into the path of the same player, who tested Greg Hall in the Glossop goal with a rasping shot on the volley that the keeper did well to push away at full stretch. But with 13 minutes remaining a strong run from Andrew Fox took him into the penalty area, and

when he squared the ball to Joe Thornton on the left hand side of the area, the striker buried a shot in the far corner of the net giving Hall no chance. It looked like it was destined not to be Glossop's day four minutes later, when after a Dave Young header was cleared off the line, the ball fell to Tom Bailey whose shot beat the keeper but agonisingly hit the crossbar before being hacked to safety. But with two minutes remaining, Surrey Street was rocking once more when Glossop grabbed a dramatic equaliser. A delightful through ball from Lee Blackshaw sent Sam Hind through on goal, and the Glossop substitute rifled an unstoppable shot past Gathercole in the Shaw Lane goal to spark wild celebrations on and off the pitch. That goal took the game into extra time, and after taking a breather both sides started the first period slowly, although Hind had a chance when he cut inside from the left wing and fired in a shot that Gathercole deflected wide with an outstretched foot. But with three minutes of the opening period of extra time remaining, Jason Carey ensured the volume level inside the ground was cranked up once more, when he chested down a cross, and with defenders bearing down he squeezed a shot between the keeper and the near post to give Glossop the lead. From that point onwards, Aquaforce looked spent, and five minutes into the second period of extra time, Glossop made sure of victory with a clinching third goal. Jason Carey and Tom Bailey broke through on goal, being played onside by an injured Shaw Lane defender lying out of action wide on the left wing. Carey set up Bailey for a shot that Shaw Lane keeper Gathercole pushed round the post, and when the resulting corner was played short to Carey, he picked his spot with a shot across the keeper into the far corner to seal victory for the Hillmen. From then on, it was a case of just seeing the game out against a Shaw Lane side that looked completely out on their feet, and the final blast of the referee's whistle produced predictable scenes of celebration among players and supporters alike.

Match Report 1874 Northwich 5-0 St Helens Town

The expulsion of Stockport Sports from the NW Counties Premier Division, together with the cancellation of all their results, has left St. Helens Town only two points clear of AFC Blackpool and one point ahead of Barnoldswick Town near the foot of the table, with Bacup & Rossendale Borough adrift at the

bottom, but running into form with two victories in recent games. With two clubs going down at the end of the season, it is a battle St. Helens could do without and their young, inexperienced side have not won a game since the end of November, a run of 11 games, extended by a 5-0 beating at title-challenging 1874 Northwich on Tuesday. The game, played at Winsford, was evenly balanced at half-time, with the home side only 1-0 ahead, for Town’s young forward line, led by the pacy Marcus Perry and the industrious James Rushton-Woods, had had plenty of chances in the opening 45 minutes, but had just lacked the finishing touch in front of goal. The pitch at the Barton Stadium was fairly dry, but uneven in places and control of the ball was difficult and unpredictable. St. Helens fielded a makeshift side, lacking Rory Crowther in goal, Hamish Falconer at the back, Cole Ashton in midfield and Andy Gillespie up front, but youngsters Adam Birchall, Frazer Findlay and James Golding turned in promising displays against the much older, well-paid Northwich side. Ryan Mitchell opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, with a well-placed header just inside Chris Millen’s far post following a failed clearance by the Town defence. Michael Brandon scored the second goal in similar circumstances, netting from a corner, on 51 minutes, but even at 2-0, Town looked likely to score on several occasions and make a fight of it. However, just as they did on Saturday against Nelson, a disastrous spell of three goals in five minutes, took the game away from Town. Firstly, Matt Woolley hit an awkward shot which Millen managed

only to fumble into his own net on 71 minutes, then Brandon scored his second four minutes later following a defensive error which left the centre forward in possession right in front of Millen, giving the stand-in keeper no chance and Joe Woolley completed the scoring almost immediately afterwards in comical fashion, the shot ricocheting off Millen and his near post before ending up in the Town net. Northwich had several other chances during the game, but missed on three or four occasions when it had looker easier to score, but this was a fixture Town were expected to lose, yet they battled to the end to keep the score down to a respectable total, which was probably par for the course. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

of St Helens Town AFC

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL News Eccleshall goalkeeper Brandon McEleny can look back on a day to remember in more ways than one, after an amazing double triumph at the weekend. After being nominated as the Division One Goalkeeper of the Month for February after a series of good performances, Brandon rounded off a great weekend in grand style by scoring the

equalising goal for his side against Irlam at Silver Street on Saturday. Irlam had gone two goals ahead in the first half through a double from Gareth Mooney, but Josh Crofts reduced the deficit with a goal just after the hour for Eccleshall. With the game moving into stoppage time, manager Steve Lloyd waved Brandon up the field when Eccleshall won a corner, and in true Roy of the Rovers style, when the ball came into the box Brandon rose to power a header into the top corner of the net to rescue a point for his side.

Eccleshall Secretary Jim Tunney said: "I checked with the referee's assessor after the game, and he told me that Brandon's goal came in the 95th minute. As soon as play restarted, the referee blew for full time, so you can't get any closer than that. "When we won a corner, I must admit I never even noticed Brandon had come up for it, but when the ball came in to the penalty area, he was positioned around the penalty spot and sent a terrific header into the top corner of the net. A top notch centre forward would have been proud of it! "Brandon has done really well for us since he came into the side a few months ago, but I think he'll be living on that goal for a long time to come".

West Didsbury & Chorlton - Manchester band Dutch Uncles launched their new album "O Shudder" at the Men United Cup quarter final tie against Bootle at Brookburn Road. The band took part in a half time penalty shoot out with fans, and the event was featured in publications as diverse as the Manchester Evening News and the NME. Nelson - the Admirals have appointed Toxy Hussain as their new Head of Community Sport. Toxy, well known in the area as a cricketer with Nelson Cricket Club, will oversee all the club's community based programmes as part of their "Nelson FC In The Community" initiative. Chief Executive Adam Keizer said: "It's important that as a football club we engage with the local community, provide role models for local youngsters, and promote sport for all ages, so it's fantastic that we can finally put our plans into action with Toxy at the helm". Club News #RND15 Town are playing there part in this year’s Red Nose Day 2015 by supporting a number of fundraising activities in the build up to 13th March 2015. Every two years, since 1988, Red Nose fundraising for Comic Relief has been inspiring the nation to help change the lives of people in the UK and Africa. It ’s a fantastic six weeks of fundraising culminating with a fun-filled night of TV

comedy and entertainment on 13th March 2015. 2015 is set to be a big year for Comic Relief. To date, they have raised more than £950 million. Toyota GB have become an official partner of Red Nose Day 2015, reflecting their global vision and commitment to improving lives around the world. The whole

Toyota family is getting together with each Centre taking the opportunity to reach out to their local community to raise funds. As an official partner for Red Nose Day, Toyota is the exclusive retailer of Red Noses for cars – with the aim of raising £1 million through sales and other fundraising. Match Report Abbey Hey 3-1 St Helens Town

St. Helens Town had to endure another dismal week, which produced two defeats and, with only seven games left they sit precariously perched just above the relegation zone.

Tuesday saw a very youthful Town side go down to a somewhat predictable 5-0 loss at 1874 Northwich, a result which was probably par for the course against the well-placed Winsford-based side, but better was hoped for from Saturday’s trip to Abbey Hey, which saw a St. Helens side fielding six newcomers, but they still went down 3-1 to leave themselves a point ahead of both AFC Blackpool and Barnoldswick Town, with Bacup a further 7 points behind at the foot of the table, with two clubs scheduled to drop into Division 1 at the season’s end. It was a bright day at Abbey Stadium in Gorton, but the wind played a major part in proceedings, especially in the first half, when Town had the strong breeze behind them, but it was no real advantage as the ball was very difficult to control. Still, the visitors had the best chances early on, with new striker Ryan Taylor going close with two good shots before another new boy, Fraser Derby, had the best opportunity to score, his rasping shot dipping violently and only a great finger-tip save from Abbey’s keeper John McIlwaine prevented the visitors taking the lead after 20 minutes. Dave Dempsey, who has enjoyed a number of spells with Town over recent years, had to recover from an early injury setback, but he too went close when, making full use of the wind, forced another good save from McIlwaine just under the crossbar a few moments later. It was somewhat against the run of play when Abbey Hey broke clear on 27 minutes and an accurate cross from captain Des Flanagan was met well by Brandon Zibaka, who lobbed Rory Crowther in the Town goal, to put the home side a goal up. From that point onwards, the momentum shifted in favour of the Manchester side, who enjoyed the better of the remaining minutes up to half-time. After the break, St. Helens began well and were in the early ascendency but another break ended with Justin Pickering firing in a shot, which hit one of his teammates on the Town line, but the rebound ran kindly for Pickering who hit home at the second attempt. Zibaka netted again on 76 minutes in

remarkably similar circumstances, following a break by Sam Freakes, to put Abbey Hey 3-0 up. However, Town then hit back with the next move of the game, Aaron Morris finishing well after Nathan Martland’s initial shot was deflected by a defender. Abbey Hey shut down the game at 3-1 and Town never looked likely to reduce the arrears. After Tuesday’s clash against Glossop, Town are next in action again on Saturday when Congleton Town visit Brocstedes Park, kick-off at 3pm. The visit to Glossop, scheduled for 21st March, will have to be re-arranged, owing to a clash with the Derbyshire side’s long trip to St. Austell in the FA Vase Semi-Final First Leg and St. Helens’ next game is at home to Silsden on Tuesday, 31st March.
