Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this FA Challenge Cup, Preliminary Round Tie against Glossop North End. I hope our visitors had a good journey to St Helens, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. We will be looking to bounce back this afternoon after a couple of disappointing results if not necessarily poor performances. Whilst we did not perform against Barnoldswick last Saturday and sank to a 3-0 reverse we put in easily the best performance of the season on Tuesday evening against a Congleton Town side who had won their first three league matches and also demolished Daisy Hill 8-0 in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round but decision conspired against us and we came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline. We had a disastrous start to the game falling being on 10 minutes but recovered well and levelled in added on time at the end of the first half when Liam Pearson netted his fourth of the campaign. A penalty saw the visitors back in front just after the hour mark and Pearson added his fifth goal in six games to level again. Iain Dyson had a goal disallowed for offside in the latter stages of the contest and Congleton saw the benefit of an offside decision not given to net a winner in the fourth minute of added on time. When you consider that we had two good shouts for a penalty turned down, one of those being almost identical to the one awarded to the visitors from which they scored and the timing of the offside (at 2-2) things could have turned out very differently. Onto today’s match the visitors Glossop have similar to ourselves not had the best of starts to the season but will be looking to advance into the next round at what has been a happy hunting ground for them in recent years. The last Town win against Glossop here at Knowsley Road came in March 2006 and since then Glossop have won the four contests netting 19 times to Town’s 1 reply, lets hope that trend is reversed this afternoon! The venue for next Saturday’s home FA Vase tie against Brodsworth Welfare has had to be switched as since Sky have moved Saints game against Castleford from Friday to Saturday we will be unable to play here at Knowsley Road. It will now take place at Alder Street home of Atherton Collieries with a 3pm kick off. Lets get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowlsey Road for this FA Cup Preliminary Round fixture against our friends and Vodkat League rivals, Glossop North End. Let’s hope the players, officials and supporters of both sides enjoy and entertaining encounter. I know that some of the Glossop faithful will be here under sufferance as it seems Knowsley Road is not their favourite venue - thankfully for them it will be their final visit and we look forward to crossing swords with them at Ashton Town in our ‘home’ league encounter at the end of October. Both clubs made FA Cup progress courtesy of replay victories in the Extra Preliminary Round, Town ousting Nostell Miners Welfare with a tremendous 5-4 penalty shoot out win after the replay finished 2-2 after extra time. The ‘Hillmen’ secured a narrow 1-0 win at Wigan Park after a 2-2 draw at Surrey Street. Both clubs will be hoping to make the next round and earn today’s prize money of £1500 along with a home tie against either Witton Albion or Mossley on Saturday 11 September. May I also thank Jim Lockwood who gave his kind permission for us to use some of his excellent photos from Glossop’s recent counters with Wigan RP in today’s programme. Town warmed up for today’s game with a 2-3 loss at home to high flying Congleton Town and while the score line was disappointing the performance was not. The lads more than matched their opponents on Tuesday evening and the score could have easily been reversed with end to end action in the final 15 minutes which saw the ‘Bears’ snatch the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time!! Again, we are left to bemoan inconsistency from the match officials who appeared happy to award Congleton a penalty (which it was) but who denied Town two equally good claims. Lee and the lads must now build Tuesday’s performance and hopefully go one better and in doing so reverse recent season’s home defeats at the hands of today’s opponents. Glossop had to come from two goals down on Wednesday evening when entertaining Stone Dominoes, Anthony Trucca netting both efforts for the Hillmen Our FA Vase fixture against Brodsworth Welfare will now take place at Atherton Collieries FC. We were notified on Monday afternoon that Knowsley Road would be unavailable as SKY had requested a switch in the Saints v Castleford tie from Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th September. We are grateful to Emil Anderson and the committee at Colls for the assistance. Today sees the first of our 100+ Club draws which will take place in the Black Bull after the game. Don’t forget if you want to join it’s £5 per month with a prize fund of around £500 (1st - £150, 2nd - £75 and 3rd - £25) please see any committee member. Unfortunately I won’t be at today’s game having planned (badly) a trip to St Ive’s with my in-laws. In Town Today . . . Glossop North End were founded in 1886 and began by playing friendly amateur matches. They played at a variety of grounds, including Pygrove, Silk Street, Water lane, and Cemetery Road before settling on North Road. The club joined the North Cheshire League in 1890, before moving to the Combination in 1894, becoming a professional club and introducing professional players. The club moved again to the Midland League in 1896 before being elected after their third application, to the Second Division of the Football League in 1898. The club won promotion in that first

season, after finishing second to Manchester City, ( and finishing above Newton Heath, who of course went on to become Manchester United). In the Summer of 1899, the club changed it’s name to Glossop FC. Sadly though, the glory didn’t last, as The Hillsmen were relegated after just the one season. They struggled to just 4 victories and finishing bottom, were relegated back to the Second Division. However they did manage a 1-0 victory at home to then Champions Aston Villa and beat another future European Champion side when they thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0. In 1908/09, the club recorded their best FA Cup performance when they reached the quarter finals, before losing in a replay at Bristol City. However, the adventure had been financed by cotton magnate Samuel Hill-Wood, and with that industry in terminal decline (at least as far as Glossop and surrounding area was concerned) he upped sticks to London, investing his money in, and becoming chairman of Arsenal, who were elected to the top division from where they have never been relegated. Indeed his great grandson , Peter Hill-Wood is still chairman there. The club then struggled for several seasons (though it did manage it’s record attendance of 10,736 against former namesakes Preston North End in the FA Cup during the 1913-14 season), finishing bottom at the end of the 1914-15 season. With the onset of World War 1 the Football League closed down until the start of the 1919-20 season, by which time Glossop had dropped out of the League, and started the 1919-20 season in the Lancashire Combination, sharing a ground with Northern Nomads for several years. Although no longer in the illustrious big league, Glossop endured thanks to Oswald Partington MP; a former captain in the 1890’s, who reformed the club after the Great War. To this day Glossop are often cited as the smallest town in England to be home to a Football League top Division Club. After just one season, the club dropped out of the Lancashire combination and into the Manchester League of which they were champions in 1927/28, and also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Glossop again ceased playing during the Second World War and then rejoined the Manchester League. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 Glossop moved from their original League ground at North Road to the present ground; the ‘Arthur Goldthorpe Stadium’, better known as Surrey Street. Goldthorpe was a local Estate Agent who made a donation of £700 to build the stadium – over half the cost. A crowd of 2000 attended the official opening of the ground, and the improved facilities meant the club were accepted back into the Lancashire Combination.

. . . Glossop North End The Club almost went out of business in the 1990/91 season when the then Chairman sold the ground to the local Council and left the Club with huge debts thanks to criminal activity. The new Board of Directors took over in January 1991 and reconstituted the Club, reverting to the original North End name which had been abandoned back in 1898. (the name incidentally, was homage to Preston, who Samuel Hill-Wood had greatly admired). During the summer of 1992, floodlights were erected by volunteer supporters, with many of materials being donated by the local community in order that the ground could meet first division standards. In 1997 Glossop North End AFC won the Manchester Premier Cup under the guidance of Manager Syd White, beating Trafford FC at Old Trafford, and retained the title in 1998 with a 1-0 victory over Radcliffe Borough at Maine Road. When Chairman of the club in the 2000-01 season, Syd White stepped in temporarily following Mickey Boyle’s departure and again led the team to silverware, with the club winning the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history, beating Glapwell in a two-legged final. Chris Nicholson was then appointed as manager in the summer of 2001 and instilled a superb spirit at the club again, following a few unsettled seasons, where final league positions were on a downward slide, and relegation battles had been faced before safety was secured. After two seasons, Chris had reversed this trend; the 2004/2005 season was the best for 7 years, finishing 13th, reaching a semi-final and producing the league’s highest scorer with 40 goals, Garry Kharas. Chris and assistant Steve Young introduced a number of young players from the successful league/cup winning reserve side of 2003-04 in the years that followed, and in 2006-2007 North End had their youngest squad for many years, and finished a creditable 9th in the NWCFL, the highest position achieved by Chris in his 6 seasons. When Nicholson announced his intention to step down at the end of the 2006/2007 season, due to his impending emigration to Australia, the club advertised the vacancy, and despite fierce competition for the job, Assistant Manager Steve Young was appointed for the start of the 2007/08 season. Steve’s appointment, along with that of his vital right hand man Terry Hincks, has seen on-field results improve dramatically, with the team finishing 7th and 5th in their two seasons at the helm.. The biggest day in the history of the club came in 2008/09, when they embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result - losing 2-0 Whitley Bay - the run has awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town, and promotion to the Evo-Stick League is a stated aim, along with ambitious ground development plans. 2009/10 started off in disappointing fashion with an FA Vase hangover but the club recovered to finish in 7th position doing the double over Town in the process. With a thriving Supporters Club, who funded and built the clubs new dugouts, helping to generate interest in the club, everyone at Surrey Street is hugely hopeful that Glossop North End can now plan for an exciting future.

Match Report Tuesday 24th August 2010; Vodkat League, Premier Division St Helens Town 2-3 Congleton Town 0-1 Shane Reaney 10 Minutes, 1-1 Liam Pearson 45+2 Minutes, 1-2 Matt Haddrell 61 Minutes (penalty), 2-2 Liam Pearson 72 Minutes, 2-3 Mark Beeston 90+4 Minutes. Sometimes football is a cruel game and this was never more evident that this evening when St Helens Town put in their best performance of the season but a goal in the fourth minute of added on time at the end of the match denied the hosts a point which was the least that they deserved. The visitors netted an early goal when Matt Haddrell’s long ball over the top was collected by Shane Reaney and his first time lobbed effort beat the advancing Dale Newbrook in the hosts’ goal. St Helens had a chance to level on 19 minutes but Marc Stephens could only shoot wide of the right hand upright after a surging run. On the half hour mark Congleton almost doubled their advantage when a long diagonal ball from left to right by Jack Watson found Carl Nesbbitt on the left wing and his cross towards the far post found the unmarked Robert Heath but his headed effort was palmed away by Newbrook and the danger cleared. Moments later at the other end of the pitch skipper Ben Kay won the ball in midfield and advanced before finding Iain Dyson on the left of the penalty area he beat his man and got into the before shooting into the side netting. The first of a few moments of controversy were to come in the 40th minute when Liam Pearson got the better of his defender and into the box on the left only to have his legs taken by the Congleton man, stonewall penalty to most but not to the referee and play was allowed to continue. St Helens got their just deserts in added on time at the end of the first half when Mike Fargher found Pearson with an excellent ball and he made space for himself to get into the box and shot home to level matters at the interval. The hosts started the second period off well with chances created for Pearson, Frazer and Dyson but neither of them tested Matt Conkie in the Congleton goal. The second moment of controversy came on the hour mark when in an identical position to the “foul” on Pearson at the end of the first half Ryan Baker was felled in similar fashion and to the astonishment of plenty Mr Copeland pointed to the spot from where Haddrell converted to put Congleton back in the lead. Good work by Pearson on the right and a subsequent cross towards Dyson on the far post could have seen St Helens level had it not been for the intervention of Adam Vickers who turned the ball behind for a corner. The scores were level on 72 minutes when an attack down the right saw Fargher link with Pearson on the edge of the box, the striker tried his luck and Conkie looked to have it covered but somehow managed to dive over the ball and Pearson wheeled away to celebrate. The closing stages of the contest resembled basketball with end to end action as both sides looked to take a maximum return. St Helens had a brace of chances as first Dyson had an overhead kick blocked on the line by Simon Smith before a counter attack saw Daley Woods find Pearson who in turn found Dyson who slotted the ball home only to be denied by a dubious offside flag. Congleton then had a chance when Smith’s effort from 25 yards had to be parried by Newbrook in the St Helens goal and the loose ball was cleared to safety. In added on time at the end of the game the hosts created two chances first Woods on the counter found Pearson who appeared to be pushed in the Congleton box but again no foul was deemed to have been committed. Then Pearson played in Woods and Conkie had to be alert to keep his effort out. The killer blow came in the fourth minute of added on time when a free kick was sent into box and it was flicked on towards the far post where Mark Beeston who was hugging the goal-line with his onside nature being questioned headed home and the goal was allowed to stand. St Helens Town were gutted to have had a share of the spoils snatched from them so late in the day but will know if they carry this kind of performance into the upcoming games they will be winning more times than they lose.

St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. . . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. “Keep on Running: Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge” will begin on the morning of Tuesday 28th September at the KC Stadium in Hull, The Foundation are hoping friends and fans will run alongside Steve as he embarks upon the 104 mile route to Manchester’s Old Trafford. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league.

Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. Vodkat League News New Mills Launch Apprenticeship Scheme

New Mills are looking to recruit 20 full time apprentices through a new scheme launched by the club. The scheme will be run by the club in conjunction with RS Coaching Limited, and is aimed at helping to develop young footballers in the High Peak and Stockport areas, and at the same time enhance their sporting and academic education. The scheme is primarily aimed at both males and females aged 16 to 18 although there is scope to accept 19 to 30 year olds who would like the opportunity to develop as a full time footballer and

be given the chance to play semi-professional football for New Mills AFC. All apprentices will be given a contract of employment and be paid a weekly wage and will combine full time professional football coaching by FA and UEFA qualified coaches with academic studies. New Mills AFC youth team manager Mark Worthington will be leading the scheme alongside Coach Educator Bill Prendergast and Head Coach Gareth Prendergast and together they will be delivering NVQ Level 2 in Sport Recreation and NVQ Level 3 in Sport Development along with a number of other qualifications such as First Aid and Child Welfare. Mark explained: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is serious about trying to make it as a professional footballer. We will be employing, through RS Coaching Limited, a full time football coach whose role will be to develop local young talent and bring them through into New Mills's first team. "This is an exciting time for New Mills AFC as we have put in place a fantastic structure this season with strength across our youth, reserve and first teams and now we are really looking to develop as a Football Club.” "With the first team playing in the Vodkat League Premier Division, the reserves in the Vodkat Reserve League and youth team in the North West Youth Alliance League we will be looking to forge links with local professional Clubs, with a view to offering apprenticeship places to players who are not successful in securing scholar or professional contracts at their current Clubs. "This is a wonderful opportunity for any young footballer recently released by a professional football Club or any aspiring young footballer who feels they have the potential to become a professional footballer. The apprenticeship scheme will run for the entire season (maximum of 36 weeks) and there are around twenty places available".

Around The Grounds The Barton Stadium - Winsford United FC The first Tuesday of the football season proper saw a trip to Winsford United’s Barton Stadium. The ground had one of the biggest car parks I have seen at a football ground at our level and indeed beyond. A short walk from the car park (or a long one depending on which end of the car park you are at) is the turnstiles and once beyond these you are into the ground. The Barton Stadium once housed greyhound racing and this is evident at various points around the ground one of the major factors in this is the length the barriers behind the goals are away from the pitch. When you enter the ground there is a goal directly in front of you (pictured above) and this area is hard standing with no cover if you move off to your left you will make your way around to a long covered terrace (picture below). If you carry on around the ground there is another uncovered area behind the goal and then back around to the opposite side of the pitch to the long terrace in the main stand complex which houses the dressing rooms, hospitality area and also the clubhouse. In front of this is the only seated area in the ground with ample blue plastic seating for all in attendance. The clubhouse is of decent size and has ample stock available but looks like it is in need of a bit of refurbishment to bring it back to its glory days. As previously mentioned there are indicators of the old dog days with old bricked up betting windows next to the main stand and home straight lights,

complete with dangling electrical wires! The snack bar is an old building back towards the turnstiles with more blue plastic seats! All in all a decent facility for our level although quite scary when the wind blow and the floodlights glare moves all over the pitch like the aliens are landing!

All Our Yesterdays . . . St. Helens Town AFC in the FA Cup

Following the narrow victory over Nostell Miners Welfare on penalties after extra time in the replayed Extra Preliminary Round tie, St. Helens Town face the difficult task of eliminating Glossop North End in today’s FA Cup Preliminary Round. The home side will need no reminding that Glossop have inflicted heavy defeats on Town in the last two league meetings here, 0-6 two season’s ago and 1-5 in the last campaign. However, St. Helens did manage a superb 3-1 win at Glossop in April 2009, just before The Hillmen travelled to Wembley for the FA Vase Final. Neither team has started this season impressively so there’s every chance that Town can progress to the First Qualifying Round. Prize money of £1500 awaits today’s winners, as well as a home tie against either Mossley or Witton Albion on September 11. Town have never previously met Glossop in the FA Cup, but they have featured regularly in the First Qualifying Round since the club was re-formed in 1946. Their first attempt at this stage in 1948/49 produced a 1-0 win at Formby, but Bangor City (a frequent stumbling block over the next few years) won 3-0 at Hoghton Road in the Second Qualifying Round. The following year, in Bert Trautmann’s final match for Town, Bangor City again won 3-0 at Hoghton Road, in the First Qualifying Round. In 1952/53, a trip to Bangor resulted in a 2-0 defeat and the following year the clubs met again in the Preliminary Round at City Road: the game ended 2-2, but Town lost the replay 5-1. The next occasion Town reached the First Qualifying Round was in 1957/58, when they lost 3-5 at home to Llandudno and the same team put Town out the following season at the Council Field, this time by 3-0. Between 1961/62 and 1970/71, Town had the good fortune to avoid the Preliminary Round altogether, but only three times did they progress to the Second Qualifying Round, where they lost at Altrincham (4-1 in 1964/65) and at home twice to Skelmersdale United, 0-3 in 1965/66 and 0-1 in 1968/69. Prescot Cables (twice), Ashton United (twice), Earlestown, Rhyl, Chorley, Droylsden and Rossendale United were our conquerors in between. Skelmersdale again, Rhyl once more, New Brighton, Oswestry (after two replays) and Macclesfield accounted for Town at the First Qualifying stage in the remaining years of the 1970s. The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade for Town in the FA Cup. In 1980/81, wins at Southport (3-1) and Leyland Motors (4-0) set up a Third Qualifying Round clash against Fleetwood Town at Hoghton Road, but Town went out 0-1. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Bootle in 1982/83 was a disappointing result, two years later a 2-0 win over Congleton led to a Second Qualifying Round game at Formby, where another 1-0 defeat was the order of the day. 1985/86 saw Town get within touching distance of the First Round Proper when wins at Colwyn Bay by 3-0, at home to Eastwood Hanley (2-0) and at Leek Town (1-0) took Town to the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first and only time in their history. Morecambe were the opponents and a 1-1 draw was achieved at Christie Park.

. . . Town’s Early Years York City awaited the winners in the First Round but, sadly, Town slipped to a 1-0 home defeat in the replay. The Second Qualifying Round was reached again the following year (Town’s FA Vase winning season) when, having thumped Heanor Town 6-0, Armthorpe Welfare were the winners in another Hoghton Road replay. 1987/88 saw another memorable campaign as Town reached the Third Qualifying Round, going out 2-3 at Northwich Victoria, having seen off Ilkeston after two replays and Horwich RMI after another drawn game. The last two decades have seen only modest progress by Town in the premier knock-out competition. On only 4 occasions since 1987 have St. Helens reached the Second Qualifying Round and every time the club has been beaten. In 1993/94, there was a 2-1 defeat at Knowsley United, Ryhope CA won 2-1 in 1997/98, Droylsden 6-0 in 1998/99 and, most recently, in 2005/06, having defeated Crook Town 3-0 in the Preliminary Round and Northallerton Town 3-2 away after a 3-3 home draw, Alfreton Town were 2-0 winners at Knowsley Road. Last season, Town recorded great victories at Parkgate and at Colwyn Bay before going out 1-3 at Cammell Laird in a disappointing performance. Having never reached the First Round proper, St. Helens will have high hopes this time round if Glossop can be beaten, particularly with home advantage in the next round.

Vodkat League News Linnets Part Company With Steve Wilkes

Runcorn Linnets have parted company with First Team Manager, Steve Wilkes. A statement on the club website reads as follows. "Although unbeaten since the start of the season, the performances have been patchy and inconsistent, and the targets and expectations discussed with the Manager in pre-season have not been met, despite the fact that the club has a good group of young players. The club would like to put on record their thanks to Steve Wilkes and Ian McGarry for their efforts, and wish them and their families well for the future. Runcorn Linnets will be having discussions with various parties over the coming days to arrange the appointment of a new management team. The club wishes to appoint a manager with the right credentials to move the club forward and fulfill the great potential at the club.”

Campaign Launched For Non-League Day Two non-league fans have announced the official launch of the Non League Day website (www.nonleagueday.co.uk) in anticipation of the national event taking place on Saturday September 4th 2010. The "non-league football day" is the brainchild of James Doe, a lifelong football fan and supporter of Harrow Borough FC. James has teamed up with Mike Bayly, Commercial Manager at Wingate & Finchley FC, and author of "Changing Ends - A season in non-league football", to promote the merits of non-league football and encourage football followers across the country to visit a non-league game. Saturday September 4th has been chosen because there are no Premiership or Championship fixtures, as England begin their

Euro 2012 campaign against Bulgaria the previous evening. James originally suggested the idea of a Non League Day on a social networking site, and the idea has taken off to the point that it is supported by BBC Radio London, the Football Supporters Federation and various leading sports websites.

A woman is out golfing one day when she hits her ball into the woods. She goes into the dense undergrowth to search for it, and happens upon a frog in a trap. The frog suddenly speaks. “If you can release me from this trap,” it says, “I will grant you three wishes.” The woman frees the frog, which thanks her and explains, “I failed to mention that there is a condition to your wishes. Whatever you wish for, your husband will get ten times more!” The woman ponders for a moment, then says, “That will be okay.” For her first wish, she asks to be the most beautiful woman in the world. “You do realise that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis, who will attract many women,”

warns the frog. “That will be okay, because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will only have eyes for me,” says the woman. So, KAZAM – she becomes the most beautiful woman in the world. For her second wish, she asks to be the richest woman in the world. “That will make your husband the richest man in the world and he will be ten times richer than you,” the frog reminds her. “That will be okay, because what is mine is his, and what is his is mine,” she says. So, KAZAM - she becomes the richest woman in the world. “That leaves you with one wish,” says the frog. “Ah, for my third and final wish,” says the woman, smiling, “I’d like a mild heart attack.” A farmer goes out to his field one morning only to find all his cows frozen solid. As far as the eye can see are cows, motionless, like statues. It had been a bitterly cold night, but he’d never thought that anything like this would happen. The enormity of the situation suddenly dawns on him. With his entire stock gone, how will he make ends meet? How will he feed his family? How will he pay the mortgage? He sits with his head in his hands, trying to come to terms with his impending poverty. Just then, an elderly woman walks by. “What’s the matter, love?” she asks. The farmer gestures toward the frozen herd and explains his predicament. Without hesitation, the elderly woman starts to blow gently on the nose of the nearest cow. After a few seconds the cow begins to twitch and is soon back to normal, chewing the cud. One by one the elderly woman defrosts the cows until the whole field is full of healthy animals. The farmer is delighted and asks her what she wants as repayment for her amazing deed, but she declines his offer and walks off across the field. A passing rambler who has witnessed the whole thing approaches the bewildered farmer. “You know who that was, don’t you?” he asks. “No, who was it?” enquires the farmer, eagerly. “Well, my friend,” comes the reply. “That was Thora Hird.”
