LITURGY
FIRST SUNDAY
OF LENT
LOOKING AHEAD
LIVE THE LITURGY—WEEKLY INSPIRATION
Temptation is a part of our lives. Even Jesus wrestled with temptation.
Our faith tells us that we are meant to live our lives in service of God's
kingdom. Yet, we often find ourselves pursuing our own desires rather
than God's. The Gospel clearly tells us that true power is found in the
embrace of virtue - living lives of non-violence, mercy, and forgiveness.
Yet, we still are not convinced and seek things that will hurt us and
retaliate against those who harm us. When Jesus faced temptation, he
found security in who he was, which firmly rooted him in his mission
and gave him the determination to trust in God. We, too, must learn to
find security in our identity as a son or daughter of God, to live out our
mission rooted in that truth, and to be confident in God's abiding
presence.

Human beings are faced with temptations that concern our well-
being (bread), our own power and glory (kingdoms of the world), or
the limits of God’s power (throwing oneself off the parapet of the
temple). Jesus overcame each of these temptations with the power
and knowledge of Scripture, and secure in his relationship with God
as his son. As Jesus faced such fundamental temptations, we
shouldn’t be surprised with by temptation either. However in Luke’s
telling, there might be a slight disservice to the reader. For our
temptations will not likely come in physical personification of the
devil, but we will be tempted, nonetheless, by appeals to our well-
being, our own power and glory, and what we would consider the
limits of God’s power. If we, like Jesus, can be assured of our
relationship with God, secure in our filial relationship with the
divine, we can overcome temptation as well. Though the devil left
Jesus for a time, he did return. And it was then that the ultimate
temptation faced Jesus. Then he trusted in God to the point of death,
only to be raised to new life.

LOVE NOTES
Lent is a great time to learn to pray
together as a couple. It has been
said, the couple who prays together,
stays together. If you need help
getting started, you can refer to the
card for couples in the Kiosks,
“Becoming One”. This is an
initiative of the Office of Marriage
and Family Life to inspire married
couples to live out the Sacrament of
Marriage through seeking God in
prayer together. OR, why not use
the booklet the parish is providing,
“Not By Bread Alone”. This provides
citations for daily reading, a
reflection, meditation and prayer.
Both are a great way to get started
praying together as a couple!

♦♦ ST. VINCENT DE PAUL REFLECTION♦♦
In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power
and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of
prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to
celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
♦♦ REQUEST FOR PICTURE MAGAZINES ♦♦
Magazines with pictures are needed for the Confirmation Retreat.
These magazines can be dropped off in the Hospitality Center after
Masses, or brought to the Parish Office during the week. The Retreat
is being held Saturday, March 30. Thank you!!

FORGIVEN: The Transforming Power of Confession
♦♦ HAVING A STAY IN THE HOSPITAL? ♦♦
Some of the hospitals are updating their computer programs. It has come to
our attention that the hospital’s intake system cannot sort and identify
persons from the various parishes so your presence can be made known to us
when we call to see if there are people to visit. There are two ways to work
with this:
1) If you are able, notify your family or friends to inform us of your presence if
you are in one of our local hospitals and would like a visit for any reason and
2) If you are able, inform your nurse and ask them to notify your parish.
If the above is a concern for you, notice the words ‘if you are able’. Tell your
family as a matter of course of your wishes prior should a hospital stay ever
occur.
Next weekend, at all Masses, our parish will be conducting an in-
pew solicitation process for the Catholic Stewardship Appeal of
the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. If you have not already done so,
you will be asked to make a financial commitment to the Appeal.
Funds raised will assist families, train seminarians, educate chil-
dren, change a life or save a soul. We appreciate your cooperation
with this process and your support.
March 10, 2019 Page 5
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
It will take too long. I can't spare it. I don't
know anybody. I am just too busy.
How many excuses can you think of to put
forth as reasons why you should say no to the
call of Jesus Christ? Wait. You didn't know
to whom those responses were directed? We
say no to many things and many people, but
we wouldn't say no to Jesus. Really?
During this Lenten season, like all the other
seasons, we will be asked to respond in many
different ways. There will be fasting,
almsgiving, and abstinence from certain
foods. There will be invitations to various
devotions and formational studies. We will
be asked to reflect on our faith and then dive
deeper.
The argument will be made by some that
many of these things are being asked of us by
others and not Jesus. Of course, that will just
be another excuse like those above. For every
calling upon us comes with a temptation to
take the easy way out or to minimize the
value of the request.
We will stay caught up in an endless cycle of
excuses that lead us nowhere. That is unless
we simply choose to stop the madness and
say YES! This Lent, give up and give in. Let
God take over as you surrender all you are
and have to Him. Now is the time to turn to
Jesus. No more excuses.
-Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Where do I encounter temptation?
When do I give in?
How do I withstand it?
Prayer for Pastoral Transitions
Over the next few months we invite you to pray for the transition of
Pastors at St. Gregory the Great.
While we will not know who our next Pastor will be until May, we pray
for Fr. Tom and his transition into retirement, as well as all pastors who
are in a time of transition.
Loving God:
As Fr. Tom embarks on a new part of life’s journey,
we remember him in prayer.
May he find joy and fulfillment in retirement.
We will miss him,
but we thank you for his ministry among us.
Bless him with your loving care.
Amen.
