An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

“There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the holy Rosary.

With the holy Rosary, we will save ourselves; we will sanctify ourselves; we will console our Lord, and obtain the salvation of many souls.”

Sr. Lucia of Fatima

APRIL NEWSLETTER ~ ST. GREGORY CHURCH AND SCHOOL

I hope this letter finds you in good health and peace.

I am sure you are aware of the announcement from the City of San Antonio regarding Fiesta being postponed to November because of the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, we had to cancel our Fiesta de la Familia. We have already had some expenses incurred and our school budget was reliant upon this event for $55,000.00 in net income. Without this event, our school will be put in a deficit position of at least $55,000.00 dollars for this school year. This worries me and I am asking for your prayers as we try to come up with a solution to this problem. Even though we will not be having a festival, we will still be selling the raffle tickets that were already printed. Please help us by purchasing some.

Per the Archbishop’s Decree on March 13, 2020 and for the safety of Catholics in the Archdiocese, Masses were suspended for an indefinite period of time. This caused us to cancel our public Masses until further notice. I felt strange not celebrating Mass with you on the weekends and it feels odd to not to celebrate with you during Holy Week. At the time of this newsletter, I don’t know if the ban on crowds will be lifted or not, but if so the following will be our Divine Mercy Novena:

Financially, the month of February was a nightmare for me. It seemed that one thing after another was breaking down with no end in sight. First the hand dryer in the church’s sacristy restroom went out, then the toilets in the school administration building and the toilet in the church sacristy backed upped and spilled out onto the floor on a Sunday morning right before the 8 am Mass. A few days later the chapel heating unit failed. It was so cold in there we had to move the daily Mass to the church. A short time later the heater in the church broke down and we had to put portable space heaters in the chapel. Just when I thought I had seen it all, the plumbing in the gymnasium failed, and while this was being repaired toilets in a nearby school building backed upped. It took just over 21 working days and $46,558.50 to get all these repairs done. After reimbursements from CYO and the School for their share of the gymnasium bill the church’s overall expenses came out to $41,558.50. Things could have been much worse. Thank God for Vince and DeDe Gillette. When they heard of our situation they said, “If Father can only afford $10,000.00 dollars for the chapel roof top unit, (the actual cost was $14,500.00 dollars plus delivery and installation), then that is all he needs to pay. We will deliver and install the new unit at no cost”. The Gillette family have been very generous to our parish for many years. Please keep them in your prayers. They will always have my gratitude for all they have done in the past for our community and for what they continue to do. When this roof unit is installed I’m hoping that will be the end of our repairs for a long, long time.

Just when I thought the worst was over more bad news! At the recommendation of medical experts, the mayor and governor said that people should not gather in groups of more than ten and for the safety of everyone, the Archbishop issued a decree cancelling all Masses in the Archdiocese until further notice. Since we had no Masses there were no collections and what we received from those who dropped off their church support at the Parish Office was significantly less then what we normally get. On a normal weekend, we receive six to eight thousand dollars, but on that weekend we received one thousand two hundred dollars. Knowing this would not cover our regular bills I began to get worried and prayed. God is so good! He put ideas in my mind and sent people to me who offered good advice. Besides cutting expenses, it was suggested we have a telephone committee to call our donors to gently remind them to continue with their church support and send them self-addressed envelopes which they can use to mail in their church support envelopes. I will also look into the possibility of continuing my communication via emails. After the first weekend without Masses, I sent emails out to Parishioners and Rosa call several families encouraging people to continue with their regular church support. I am happy to say the results for the next weekend were most encouraging. About seven thousand dollars came in and I am most grateful to all those who sent me emails and called me on the phone to express their support for the church and myself. Continued next page.

These peoples friendship lifted my spirits and lightened the burden I was carrying. It felt good knowing I was not alone in all this, that there were others to help me and for this I give thanks to God.

Just when things like our expensive repairs and low collections were getting me down, something happened to lift my spirits. Have you noticed the “new” church floors? Mr. Arthur Gonzales, who attends the Spanish Mass, asked me one day if he could strip and wax the floors for us. He and his nephew worked on them for eight hours on Sunday and he worked an additional eight hours by himself the following day. They did a great job and for this I am very grateful. The whole church looks so much cleaner and nicer; I hope you will see it very soon. While I was at a Holy Name meeting, one of the men mentioned that they knew an electric hand drier was needed in the sacristy bathroom. They said they would take care of the whole project from start to finish and it would not cost the church a single penny. Hearing this made me feel like a load had just been lifted from my shoulders. The last month I attended the ACTS Core meeting and heard the women’s retreat director give the final report on the their retreat. During the report she said after all the bills were paid they had $1,000.00 dollars left over and wanted to give it to me to be used to pay down the church debt. I was so happy to hear this and my heart was full of gratitude for what these women did. I mention these things to make you aware of how good God is to us and what a great parish we have.

During the month of March, we had many blessings. The Parish Reconciliation Service on March 12th was well attended. It made me happy to see so many people avail themselves of this important sacrament. Even though the service started promptly at 7 pm, and there were plenty of priests, it did not end until after 9 pm. The Holy Name Men provided us with a great fish dinner on Fridays of Lent. Many commented on how good the food was. They said our plates were just as good as other parishes whose plates were selling for much more. Thank you to the Holy Name and Fishers of Men ministries for helping our people by providing a great meal at a reasonable price.

As I have said before, I am very proud of our school. We are currently taking registrations for next year so please tell everyone you know with grade school age children to consider sending their kids to our school. Our school is an official STREAM campus. STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. These disciplines are incorporated in all the classes and help prepare our students for successful careers in a 21st century work force. I know it is a sacrifice to send children to a Catholic School but take it from me, a person who has received a Catholic School education from first grade to college, it is well worth it. I want our school to be one of the best, if not the best grade school, in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. In order to do this it must continue to maintain its high academic standards along with its Catholic Identity in a family-friendly environment where students feel loved and are respectful to one another. We must do all we can to ensure our pupils reach their God-given potential and are ready to serve the community through acts of service as commanded by our Lord. I am respectfully asking you to support our school in whatever way you can. One easy way to show your support is to pray for the administration, teachers, and students and support its fundraisers. We need the school and it needs us. I feel our school is in good hands if we continue to work together as one parish family. If you want more information on our school or how you can help it fulfill its mission please call the school office at 210-3142-0281. You will not be disappointed!

In closing, I just want to thank you for your kindness to me and your support of our parish. As mentioned in other newsletters, our community will always be facing some sort of challenge from time to time. When something unfortunate happens in our country, state, or city it is just a matter of time before we feel its effects. If we face them together as one united community, then they are not overwhelming. If we think we don’t need one another and can do it all by ourselves, then we are in serious trouble. We may from time to time have trials in our life but God is so good and will always help us make it through the tough times. Let us resolve to be faithful to our Catholic beliefs and to each other. Let us look at one another as family and be ready to help one another as best we can. We are a diverse community, something to be embraced and celebrated. Please know you can always count on me to be honest with you even when the news is not good. I take seriously my position as Pastor of St. Gregory Parish and School. If there is anything you want to ask me or need something clarified, please see me. I will be happy to discuss any concern you may have. This is one way I can be accountable and transparent to you and our community.

May the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph watch over all of us and keep us in their care. Remember, God loves you and so do I.

Fr. Rudy T. Carrola, Jr. Pastor, St. Gregory the Great Church and School

Mrs. Millican’s Fine Arts Elective News

During the third quarter’s Fine Arts elective period, I’ve had the pleasure of working with our 6th graders. The goal of this class is to focus on four basic strands of foundations: observation and perception; creative expression; historical and cultural relevance; and critical evaluation response. These elements challenge students’ imaginations, foster their critical thinking, teach them to collaborate with others, and help them build their reflective skills. Through their art creations, our sixth graders have been developing their artistic skills and their understanding of the elements and principles of art with various materials and media. They have also been exploring the possibilities of markers, colored pencils, and watercolors to create projects based on contemporary and traditional art. We have been using works of art from various artists to use as inspiration and guidance to create individual art pieces. In the future, we hope to focus on Catholics of the past and how they expressed their faith in God through their art as well as how the Catholic Church uses art to express our faith. Blessings to you and your families, Mrs. Marisol Millican
