St. George City Parks Thank you for picking up a copy of The City of St. George Urban Trails Map. This map and guide was cre-ated with you in mind, to ensure a safe, efficient and exciting commute on our urban trail system. The City of St. George was one of the first communities in the state to create urban trails that connect urban centers with neighborhoods, parks and rural areas within the city. We firmly believe that our urban trail system has a direct influence on and adds to the quality of life that we have come to expect in Southern Utah. As you travel along the trails, be sure to obey all posted rules and traffic laws and please be courteous to other trail users along the way. If you see vandalism or graffiti on or near a trail please report it to the St. George Police Department by calling 627-4301. We need your help in order to keep all trails pristine for those who come to use them. Whether you use the trail sys-tem as part of your daily commute to and from work or simply like to use them for a leisurely weekend bike ride with family, we hope you make the most of this guide and use the trail system frequently. See you on the trail!
Sincerely,
Daniel D. McArthurCity of St. George, Mayor
Neighborhood Parks Neighborhood Parks are developed recreation areas owned and maintained as public parks by the City. Neighborhood Parks are deliberately close to residential areas so that they are eas-ily accessed by walking or biking. Neighborhood Parks have limited automobile parking, no lighted athletic fields for team competition, and no schedule for organized programs. There may be basketball standards, a tennis court, or a volleyball court with associated lighting within the park. Neighborhood Parks generally range from 4-10 acres.
Community Parks Community Parks are parks owned and maintained by the City that generally range in size from 10-50 acres. Community Parks serve several neighborhoods and can accommodate spe-cial events and gatherings. Community Parks provide the same amenities and elements found at a Neighborhood Park but they may also include sport fields for competitive play, group shelters, nature centers, swimming pools, recreation centers, skate parks, tennis complexes, or other opportunities for rec-reation activity that involve larger groups, competitions, and community gatherings.

Safety Gear Cyclists and skaters should wear helmets, padded gloves, and protective glasses. Water bottles are essential for all trail users.
Night Lights At night, state law requires a bike to be equipped with a white light in the front, a red reflector or red light in the rear, and reflectors or lights on the side; all visible from 500 feet.
Bike Tools Cyclists should carry basic essentials in the event of a breakdown: spare tube, tire irons, pump, wrenches and screwdrivers.
Signs Obey all traffic signs. Bicycles must follow the same rules of the road as vehicles.
Hand signals Cyclists must use hand signals to alert motorists when turning or stopping. See illustration in adjacent column.
Stay Right When on paved trails, always stay on the right side of the dashed or solid center line. Cyclists on the road are required to ride in the same direction as traffic as far to the right as practical.
Be Consistent Be predictable by walking, skating, or biking in as straight a course as possible. This will prevent accidental collisions and make passing slower trail users safer.
Be Alert Always watch for turning vehicles. Be cautious when approaching other trail users. Walk, ride, and skate defensively.
Trail Courtesy Pedestrians yield to horses. Cyclists and skaters yield to horses and pedestrians.
Bike/Pedestrian Bridges Always use caution when crossing trail bridges. Their uneven surfaces and lack of shoulders may make them difficult to negotiate. Never cross a bridge when flood conditions exist.
Pass With Care Cyclists and skaters should give an audible warning whenever passing. Always pass on the left. Do not pass when center line is solid.
Floodplains Many trails are located in floodplains. This means they are subject to periodic flooding. Always use caution when on trails during local or distant rainstorms.
Dress Appropriately Wear clothes in layers to adjust to tem-perature changes. Bright clothes increase visibility. Be prepared for heat, rain and wind as the season dictates.
Speed Limits Do not exceed posted speed limits. Always stay in control by letting the terrain, surfacing, trail width, your ex-perience, and other factors dictate your speed.
Lock Your Bike Never leave your bike unattended. Lock bikes to racks provided and be sure to lock not only the frame, but the front and rear wheels.
Plan Ahead Know where you are going. Tell someone where you plan to be and what time to expect you back. Know your equipment, your ability, the weather, and the area.
Basic Safetyl Your bicycle is considered a vehicle and you have the same rights and are subject to the same provisions as the operator of any other vehicle. This includes obeying traffic signals, stop and yield signs, and all other official traffic control devices.
l Ride in the same direction as traffic.
l Ride as far to the right as practicable except when: passing another bike or vehicle; preparing to turn left; going straight through an intersection past a right-turn-only lane; avoiding un-safe conditions on the right-hand edge of the roadway.
l Ride no more than two abreast and then only if you would not impede traffic.
l In some instances where an off-roadway bike path has been provided, you may be directed by an official traffic control device to use the path rather than the roadway.
l To make a left turn, you have two options as a bicyclist:l Use the left turn lane or two-way left turn lane in the same manner required of motor vehicles; orl Stay on the right side of the roadway, ride through the inter-secting roadway to the far corner and stop. After it is safe and legal to do so, cross going in the new direction, continuing to travel on the right side of the roadway.
l Always signal your intention to turn right or left, change lanes, or stop at least three seconds before doing so. You do not have to maintain a continuous signal if you need your hand to control the bike. Once stopped in a designated turn lane you are not required to signal again before turning.
l The acceptable hand signals are: (See hand signals diagram)l Left turn – left hand and arm extended horizontally;l Right turn – left hand and arm extended upward or right hand and arm extended horizontally; andl Stop or decrease speed – left hand and arm extended downward.
l Always yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when overtaking them.
l Use care and safe speeds to avoid collisions. Never ride where bicycles are prohibited. Never carry more people on your bike than it was designed and equipped to handle; though, as an adult, you may carry a child securely attached to you in a back pack or sling. Never race bicycles on the highway except in events approved by state or local authorities.
l Do not carry any package, bundle, or article that prevents us-ing both hands to control your bike. You must have at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
l You are required to have a white headlight, red taillight or re-flector, and side reflectors, all visible for at least 500 feet any time you ride earlier than a half hour before sunrise or later than a half hour after sunset.
l Your bicycle must be equipped with brakes.
