ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN September 27, 2015
Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. Gabriel announced to humankind the mystery of the Incarnation, of Jesus becoming one with us. Jesus came
to show us how to love, to demonstrate that God is self-giving and full of love for us. He calls each of us to make
a sincere gift of our self and to become agents of God’s mercy to others. Isn’t that what we do as family? We
learn how to LOVE. We learn how to transcend our various superficial differences, and how to respect the
presence of God in the gifts of all.
This weekend, September 26 and 27, we celebrate our parish feast day, the feast of our patron St. Gabriel the
Archangel. We also celebrate family day. We have purposefully intertwined these two celebrations so that we
may come together anew as a parish family, to give thanks to God for all of our blessings, to renew our
commitment to not only hear but to be Bearers of Good News as our patron St. Gabriel was, and to make the
desire for “family togetherness” a reality we experience this weekend as we gather for an old-fashioned
hamburger and hot dog barbecue.
May the Lord continue to bless our families and our parish!
Family Blessing
We bless your name, O Lord,
for sending your own incarnate Son
to become part of a family,
so that, as he lived within it, its sufferings and its joys,
he would be present and provide newness of life
to all families.
We ask you, Lord,
to protect and watch over these families,
so that in the strength of your grace
their members may enjoy prosperity,
possess the priceless gift of your peace,
and as the Church alive in the home,
bear witness in this world to your glory.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
St. Gabriel, Pray for us!
In the Peace and Love of Our Risen Lord!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the
early church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their
journey back to fellowship at the Lord’s Table seems
arduous and even cruel. However, at no time in the
process were the penitents lacking the support of the
community. Penances were performed for all to see, and
we can tell from the homilies of the day that people
earnestly desired to see the sinner benefit from the
remedy. Tertullian reminded the penitents that they were
living among their brothers and sisters, fellow servants
of the same Lord, still in the embrace of the Spirit. He
tells them that when they extend their hands in blessing
to the faithful, it is Christ they touch. He tells them that
when they see tears in the eyes of believers, it is Christ
who is interceding for them with the Father.
There is a treasure of our tradition woven into this
history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer of
Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ
himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person
down on his or her luck; it was effective and necessary.
The treasure we can see even through the tangles of
history is this: the Spirit of God is poured out on the
church, and brings grace, forgives sin, makes us holy,
and always calls us to fullness of life. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Family Togetherness—Make it Happen!
The Quickest and Most Effective Way: Family
Prayer --Despite what we often fool ourselves into
believing, knowing that family prayer is good,
necessary, and fruitful is very different than actually
taking advantage of it on a regular basis. Everyone
who’s tried it knows how difficult it can be to find a
good time, get everyone to participate, get everyone to
take it seriously, and not let it turn into just another
battle. However, when it is taken advantage of, it
becomes a source of unity more than any other family
activity.
What we’re talking about is more than just reciting
prayers, though that is an important part. We suggest
starting with traditional prayers and then moving into
some spontaneous prayer time in which every member is
able to participate. This provides not only formation in
learning prayers, but also in speaking to God from the
heart and hearing what it sounds like when others
(especially parents) do the same. It also gives each
person the opportunity to get a sneak peak into the
others’ relationships with God and what’s on their minds
and hearts. Talk about closeness! The Most Unexpected Way: Chores--On the
surface, it seems that having the whole family participate
in chores would help get things done more quickly and
easily. But, those who’ve tried it know that it can often
make things twice as difficult. However, if all we see is
a job that needs to be done well or a conflict to avoid, we
end up missing out on the chance for our children to take
some ownership of the home and its operation. This
helps them take pride in it, too, and understand that
they’re not just there to receive, but that they have
something vital to offer the family. This not only makes
a happy, healthy family, but it prepares children well for
whatever God is calling them to in the future.
The Most Important Way: Put First Things
First--Couples often make the mistake of allowing their
children to be their priority. Although this seems noble
and it tends to happen naturally, it’s backwards, and
nobody ends up winning. Kids need to see a strong
unity between their parents more than they need
anything else (just ask a child of divorced parents). We
all know communication is key for fostering unity, but
the most important topics are often only addressed when
they become an issue of conflict, and in that context, true
progress is pretty rare. We suggest a scheduled
dialogue, once a month for a couple of hours (get a
babysitter), and spend the week beforehand praying and
preparing for it. This will make it a three-way
conversation, and God will lead it if you let Him. It’s
amazing what a difference it can make!
