ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN
February 7, 2016
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras will be days when the whole city is celebrating, eating good food, watching parades,
catching beads, dancing in the streets, partying with family and friends. Others might watch the parades on T.V.
from their easy chairs in the comfort of their own homes. But wherever we are, these are days to have fun, to
laugh, to enjoy the company of friends and sometimes even perfect strangers, because underneath all of the
frivolity somehow we know that this is one of those times when we experience our oneness as a community. It’s
like when the Saints won the Superbowl, we see ourselves as one big family!
What would it be like if that oneness, that experience of joy, continued among us as we moved into Ash
Wednesday and the holy season of Lent? What if the 40 days of Lent could be filled with the same joy and
freedom as the days of Mardi Gras. The spirit deep in our souls would be the same, only the activities that we do
to express that spirit of joy may be somewhat different; instead of parades and picnics, we would pray and sing
together and do good deeds for those in need. We would fast and give alms. We would do all of this with smiles
and joy in loving and serving others. Lent calls us to turn away from all that obscures God’s life and joy within
us and to believe in the Good News of the Gospel: the Good News of the forgiveness that is offered, the Good
News of God’s love that is greater than anything we have done or failed to do, the Good News of the eternal life
that has already begun for us through the Death and Resurrection of Jesus and in which we share through
Baptism. Lent calls us to life: to become more and more in touch with the reality of God’s life within us, to
awaken to the glorious destiny that is ours. Is this not a reason for deep joy? (Reprinted from 2014)
In the Peace and Love of Our Lord!
Father John Michele Bergeron
