Oh, by the way,

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Alleluia!

Who would have ever imagined on Ash Wednesday

what kind of Lent we would have this year? Fasting sure

took on a radical transformation this Lent! Liturgy and

prayer life have been altered. The first Easter didn’t

happen in a Church. It happened outside of an empty tomb

while all the disciples were sequestered in a house, grief-

stricken and wondering what was going on. So, we’re all

going to be keeping things rather biblical this Easter. And we continue to ask: what is

going on? Spiritually, only time will tell yet all of us will be changed! COVID-19, what is

going on? Only time will tell yet all of us will be changed! Please continue to pray…and

wash your hands. For a little levity: Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or

should we just keep washing our hands? LOL

Our Gospel Acclamation “Alleluia” returns! The word "Alleluia" or "Hallelujah" (from Hebrew ey esiarP" snaem yllaretil hcihw ,)הללו יה Yah", is a brief form of "Praise Yahweh" and often rendered as "praise the Lord".

Easter is our principal feast in the ecclesiastical year. Pope Leo I calls it the greatest feast saying that Christmas is celebrated only in preparation for Easter.

The Easter Vigil is the “Mother of all Vigils”. Easter is also called Pascha (Greek/Latin) or Resurrection Sunday. Easter Sunday, then, is the greatest of all Sundays, and Easter Time is the most important of all liturgical times. Easter is the celebration of the Lord's resurrection from the dead, culminating in His Ascension to the Father and sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church at Pentecost. There are 50 days of Easter from the first Sunday of Easter to Pentecost. It is characterized, above all, by the joy of glorified life and the victory over death, expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian: Alleluia! All faith flows from faith in the resurrection: "If Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching; empty, too, is your faith." (1 Cor 15:14).

In 325 A.D. (or CE for historians) the Council of Nicaea established that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox.

The word "Easter" comes from Old English, meaning simply the "East." The sun which rises in the East, bringing light, warmth and hope, is a symbol for the Christian of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. (During a burial, the head of the deceased is at the west end of the burial plot symbolizing that when Christ comes again, the person is facing

east!) The Paschal Candle is a central symbol of this divine light, which is Christ. It is kept near the ambo throughout Easter Time, and lit for all liturgical celebrations.

How long does Easter last in the Catholic Church? Eastertide, or Paschaltide, the season of Easter, begins with the Easter Vigil and lasts until the day of Pentecost, seven weeks later!

The weekdays from the Ascension up to and including the Saturday before Pentecost prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.

The liturgical color for Easter is white. The General Instruction of the Roman

Missal (no. 346) also states: "On more solemn days, festive, that is, more precious,

sacred vestments may be used even if not of the color of the day. The colors gold or

silver may be worn on more solemn occasions in the Dioceses of the United States of

America."

The Congregation for Divine Worship has promulgated a new Mass formulary, In Time of Pandemic. The usual guidelines for the use of Masses for Various Needs and Occasions apply to this Mass. The Introduction for Masses And Prayers of Various Needs, no. 2 states, “In case of some grave need, a corresponding Mass may be said on the instructions of the local Ordinary or with his permission, on any day except on Solemnities, the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, days within the Octave of Easter, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day), Ash Wednesday, and on the weekdays of Holy Week.” The Mass Propers (Gathering Prayer, Prayer over the Gifts and Prayer after Communion) are all new. The Church gives two (2) options for readings. Feel free to review them: First Option: Lamentations 3.17-26; Psalm 80; Mark 4.35-41. Second Option: Romans 8.31-39; Psalm 123; Mark 4. 35-41.

A brother priest had a couple interesting thoughts printed for Easter. Before Lent, the question was, “What are you giving up?” Today, Easter Sunday, the question is, “How will you be feasting?” So, how should we feast? First, while the emphasis is not on

self-indulgence, it is on God’s abundance. Think of the miraculous meals Jesus provided, with basketfuls of bread leftover. Coffee and a bagel can be an abundant feast.

Second, feasts must be shared. The people at the table are much more important than the food on the table. How about adjusting schedules to make a regular family meal (without

texting, TV, or other distractions) a possibility. .

Friday afternoon, 3 April, was a grand time! This was a grace filled time seeing

so many of our people. Starting at St. Francis, cars were lined up 6-7 deep! Smiling

faces wanting to chat. Cross country to St. Joseph, cars were circling the horseshoe

patiently awaiting their turn. Up 119 to St. Peter, the loop on the parking lot was 10

cars deep at one time! All parishes comprised a steady stream of parishioners. What

an awesome time…and thank many of you for your contribution envelopes.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch….fr. K

Quick one-liners for you:

◼Liturgical directives during the Octave of Easter: We pray/sing the Gloria every day; the

double ‘Alleluia’ concludes all Eucharistic liturgies.

◼The Knights of Columbus meeting scheduled for Monday, April 13th has been cancelled.

◼Sympathy is extended to the family of Deb Girton on the

recent passing of her husband, Tim, age 64. Tim passed away

on Monday, April 6. A celebration of life will be postponed to a

later date because of the current restrictions. Please keep Deb

and her family in your thoughts & prayers during this difficult

time.

◼Just for fun! A man and his nagging wife were on a holiday in Jerusalem, when the

wife suddenly passed away. The funeral company told the man that it would cost $45,000

to ship his wife home or $500 to bury her in Jerusalem. The husband said, “ship her

home.” Shocked, the undertaker asked, “but Sir, why don’t you bury her in the

Holy Land and save the money?” To which the husband replied, “a long time a

ago, a man was buried here and 3 days later, he rose from the dead…I can’t

take that risk!”
