A Retreat at El Carmelo Hill
This past week, 57 priests of the Diocese of San Bernardino gathered together for their annual retreat which was held at the El Carmelo Retreat Center. El Carmelo is located on a high hill in Redlands, California. It is surrounded by orange groves and palm trees, with many religious statues dotting the beautiful grounds. The sounds of many birds fill the air as you sit in the sun contemplating God's many wonders.
I found it so conducive to getting me to focus on the message of the retreat, which was the "Person of the Priest." The intent of our retreat master was to give us, as priests, a sense of who we are and how we have been called by God to serve our people. We were reminded that maintaining anger is a major loss of life. We were called to model our lives on the Compassionate and Forgiving Jesus.
The retreat master spent quite a bit of time on forgiveness --- as holding on to hate, anger, revenge -- which can be like a poison that kills us and keeps us from being free. We are called to forgive, in imitation of Jesus Himself.
We came together for daily prayers and daily mass, which was very enriching for the whole community. At the conclusion of the retreat, we were called to come down the mountain to continue to serve and care for the people of God, to whom we have been assigned to serve.
It was a life-giving week, and I am blessed to have been able to attend.

Un Retiro en la Colina El Carmelo
La semana pasada, 57 sacerdotes de la Diócesis de San Bernardino se reunieron para su retiro anual que se llevó a cabo en el Centro de Retiros El Carmelo en Redlands, California. El Carmelo está ubicado en una colina alta en Redlands, está rodeado de naranjos, palmeras y muchas estatuas religiosas que destacan los hermosos terrenos. El sonido de muchas aves llena el aire mientras te sientas al sol contemplando las maravillas de Dios. Me pareció tan concluyente que me concentré en el mensaje del retiro, que era la "Persona en el Sacerdote". La intención de nuestro mentor de retiros fue darnos a los sacerdotes una idea de quiénes somos y cómo Dios nos ha llamado a servir a nuestro pueblo. Se nos recordó que mantener la ira es una gran pérdida de vida, en cambio; fuimos llamados a modelar nuestras vidas como el Jesús compasivo y perdonador. El mentor del retiro dedicó bastante tiempo en explicar el perdón, como aferrarse al odio, la ira y la venganza, es como un veneno que nos mata y nos impide ser libres. Estamos llamados a perdonar en imitación de Jesús mismo. Durante el retiro, nos reunimos para oraciones diarias y misa diaria, lo cual fue muy enriquecedor para toda la comunidad. Al concluir el retiro, fuimos llamados a bajar de la montaña para continuar sirviendo y cuidando a la gente de Dios a la que hemos sido asignados. Fue una semana para dar vida y he tenido la suerte de haber podido asistir. Amor y paz,

Boutique News
The Boutique Committee would like to give a big “Thank You” to everyone who worked so hard to make our Second Annual “Savers’ Run” Event so successful. The check we received will go towards the benefit of our upcoming Parish Festival. God Bless you all for your help and generosity.

FEED THE HUNGRY
“The Feed the Hungry Ministry” of our parish has been cooking dinner for the homeless, once a month, at the Hulen Riverside Community Shelter for over six years. Additionally, once a week, the volunteers prepare sack lunches, which are distributed to the homeless every Thursday in Down Town Riverside. All of this has been made possible by the incredible volunteers who give their time and food donations. Remember, this is an act of mercy, and you will be following the words Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.”
If you would like to volunteer for our Feed the Hungry Ministry, please contact Anthony Lopez at 909-234-6419. You can also participate by putting a donation check in the collection basket at mass, made payable to St. Francis de Sales. Write “FEED THE HUNGRY” on the outside of the envelope and in the memo portion of the check.
English Religious Education
Early registration for the “English Religious Education Program” will be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2019, 8:00 - 11 am, upstairs in Room 5. We have classes from Kindergarten through High School.
The cost is $100 for one child, $120 for two children, and $140 for three or more chidren. Only checks or cash will be accepted as payment. If you are paying in cash, please bring the exact change. New students will not be registered without a Baptismal Certificate. If you have any questions, please call Julia Lee at (951) 224-9981.
Congratulations to all 2019 Graduates! Come to receive a special blessing: Sunday, June 9th, we will be having our SFDS Graduation Masses at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
