Papal Visit

This week Pope Francis will be visiting the United States. He will be going to Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia. Let us pray that he will have a safe trip and that his visit will bring people closer together.

It is unfortunate, but I believe that the media will twist whatever Pope Francis says when he visits. I have said it before; the media is not a friend of the Catholic Faith. A visit from Pope Francis is an opportunity for reporters to present the church as divided and full of conflict. While it is true that we do have different opinions among theologians, the teachings of the Catholic Faith are clear. What the media does not like is that the Church has a different set of moral values than society. This being said, the Church will find herself at odds with the “politically correct” way of thinking.

Pope Francis is viewed positively by many in the secular society. However, this view may change in time. The Catholic Church will not accept abortion, euthanasia, homosexual unions, and many other laws that go against her faith beliefs. Again, just because something is legal in our secular society, does not make it morally acceptable.

I think the honeymoon period with the media and Pope Francis will soon be at an end. By holding up the teachings of the faith, Pope Francis will be viewed in a more negative light by the media. The only way to win the media’s approval would be to not hold up the teachings and values of the Catholic Faith. This simply cannot happen. To not hold up the teachings of the Catholic Faith would be a sin. If the Pope, or any other Catholic, accepts sin as okay (accepting abortion, euthanasia, etc . . . ), then they have placed themselves outside the Church. The Holy Catholic Church is lead by the Holy Spirit. To go against the Holy Spirit is much worse than going against the secular media.

Yours in Christ,

September 13, 2015 THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR PARISH.

’TIS THE GIFT TO BE SIMPLE The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity: ’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free. ’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today’s Gospel that members of God’s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus’ time, as it does in ours. The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

members suffers, we all suffer. Persecuted Christians and Christians in the free world are not two separate entities but rather are one body. Members of the Church in the

Christ is the head of the body and uses the Church (both free and persecuted) in unique and

40 Days for Life: Chicago A Prayer Vigil to end abortion

September 23 - November 1 at Albany Medical-Surgical Center

(the Chicago abortion clinic that specializes in late-term abortions)

5086 N. Elston Ave., Chicago

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion. If you have heard about and/or seen the videos regarding Planned Parenthood’s selling post-abortive baby parts for profit, 40 Days for Life provides a most appropriate response to such inhumanity. If you haven’t had the opportunity to view the videos, go to www.centerformedicalprogress.org. Consider spending an hour in prayer for an end to taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and an end to selling post-abortive baby parts for profit.

Immaculate Conception, Our Lady Mother of the Church, St. Monica and St. Eugene are joining together to provide 24-hour prayer outside Albany Medical-Surgical Center from midnight Tuesday, September 29 through midnight Wednesday, September 30, 2015. Each parish is responsible for 6 hours of the 24-hour period. Parishioners (individuals, couples, families, neighbors, ministries, groups of friends) in each parish are invited to sign up for a 1-hour period of prayer. Sign-up sheets will be available in the vestibule of church the weekend of:

September 26 - 27.

For additional information, please contact the rectory (773/775-6659) or visit www.40daysforlife.com

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-

ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
