St. Eugene’s School Fundraiser

We are very fortunate that St. Eugene School is strong and healthy. Our teachers are faith-filled and gifted, our school is supported by parishioners, and the parents of our students are dedicated to the school. Our parents, school advisory committee, and school staff have worked hard on this year’s fundraiser, which takes place on Saturday, April 30, in our Shaunessy Center. I want to thank all those who made this event possible. This year’s theme is College Days.

The main purpose of Catholic schools is religious; in other words, to form students in Catholic faith, Catholic morality, and Catholic social values. Our schools are meant to be “partners in faith” with parents. However, a school should also have a social component that brings parishioners together. While it is true that our fundraiser is meant to raise money, it also does have that social element. It is a time for adults to gather and celebrate their faith, and their love for their parish and school.

We at St. Eugene Parish, like all parents, want the best for the children who come to us for spiritual and academic formation. As a church and school, we need to be more than a place where children receive the sacraments. We need to be a place where children establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Our school is not a private school, but a catholic school. We are on this journey together - parents, teachers, students, and every parishioner of St. Eugene Parish. We must work together. We need to pray together as we strive to form the students of St. Eugene Parish into the next generation of Catholic leaders.

Let us pray for the success of our school fundraiser. Perhaps if you cannot attend the event, you can send a donation for our school to our principal, Ms. Scotkovsky. All donations are accepted. There is no donation too small or too large. Our principal will gladly accept any amount you wish to give for our parish children.

Yours in Christ,

TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

PEOPLE OF THE CROSS UNITED Killings of Christians in Nigeria has been rampant since 1999. In just one year from 2014 - 2015 the rate of Muslim-on-Christian murder has risen by 62% in Nigeria. Christians are discriminated against. They are enslaved, beaten, and murdered. Their communities are left without basic facilities such as clean water and health clinics. Access to secondary or higher education is denied to Christians. 276 young girls were abducted from a government school in 2014 by the Islamic military group Boko Haram. Most still remain in capitivity. Pray the girls will be returned to their families. Pray for Christians who have lost homes, friends, and family members to persecution.

FRIENDLY VISTORS NEEDED Be a friend to a lonely senior.

The Seniors Assistance Center is looking for outgoing, caring and compassionate volunteers to visit with a senior citizen in the communities of Norridge, Harwood Heights and unincorporated Norwood Park Township. This service provides companionship to the older adults in our community who are lonely, isolated, homebound, or in need of assistance to leave their homes. One of the most important aspects of the program is the real friendship that can develop between a senior and a friendly visitor. Some simple and fun things to do when visiting with your senior - having coffee/tea and conversation; reading aloud; playing a favorite game; sharing memories; doing crafts together; planning occasional outings such as short walks or shopping when possible. For further information about how you can become a friend to a senior, call Anne or Carole at: 708/456-7979.

MINISTRY OF CARE TO THE SICK & HOMEBOUND

Ministers of Care bring the Eucharist to those who are sick, homebound, or elderly. If you would like to arrange a visit, please contact the rectory by calling: 773-775-6659.

CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME Were you raised Catholic… but do not come or seldom come to church anymore? Are you a Catholic who feels separated from your church? Would you like to know more about the Catholic Church as it is today? Would you like to feel at home in the Catholic Church again? No matter how long you have been away and no matter the reason, we invite you to consider renewing your relationship with the Catholic Church. For more information, please call the rectory at: 773-775-6659 and ask to speak to any of our priests.

Highlighting Ministries St. Eugene Lectors

Readers of the Word (Lectors) are an important part of the life of the Church. They play a vital role by presenting the Word of God to the people during the weekend Masses, Holy Day Masses and other liturgical celebrations. St. Eugene Lectors are assigned to specific weekend Masses on a rotating schedule of approximately every three to four weeks. A new schedule is made up quarterly (January, April, July, and October) and copies are available in the Sacristy so that Lectors can know, in advance, the dates and times of their assignments. Special Masses and liturgies, such as Christmas, Easter and Holy Days, are on a volunteer basis and volunteer sign-up sheets will be available in the Sacristy approximately two weeks prior to these Masses. Anyone interested in becoming a Lector at St. Eugene must be a registered member of the parish and must attend at least one orientation class. A Lector’s Workbook is given to each lector annually to help him/her prepare the readings for which he or she is scheduled to present.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
