Page Two St. Eugene Parish Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Mark’s Gospel for today reminds us how Jesus sent his disciples out – two by two – to preach the Good News. Interestingly, Jesus tells his disciples what to bring with them and what not to take on their missionary journey. All that he says was necessary to take with them was a walking stick and sandals. The walking stick would have been used for both ease in navigating difficult terrain but perhaps more as a protection for themselves against robbers or thieves along the road. In essence Jesus was telling his disciples to depend solely on God and on the community they were visiting for both food and shelter. These should be provided because they were carrying with them the authority and power of the Word of God as representatives of Jesus himself. What is even more noteworthy is what Jesus told them to do if the message they brought was not accepted. He tells them, “Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” These are pretty powerful words. On the other hand, the message they carried with them was worthy of the deepest respect and so they went off and preached a message of repentance.

***************

It always amazes me how long time seems to pass when we are eagerly anticipating something exciting in our lives like the start of a vacation or the return of a son or daughter who has been away on a military assignment, or in my case, the start of a new assignment here at St. Eugene’s. Waiting for July 1st to roll around seemed like forever. This weekend will mark two weeks since July 1st. Where did that time go? Older folks always tell me that time goes much faster as you age. Over the years I have come to truly realize the truth of those words. I want to sincerely thank all in our parish for the warm welcome I have received. With all the emotions connected with the departure of Fr. George who has served this community so well and who was loved by so many and the uncertainty of who his replacement would be, I have to say that I truly felt and continue to feel the warmth and hospitality of our community. I want to also thank Frs. Greg, John, Jim and Phil, my brother priests here at St. Eugene for helping me to make the adjustments into a new living arrangement. We are so fortunate to have the rectory accommodations we do here. The founding pastor and those that followed him had great foresight when this parish plant was designed and built. I see so much potential down the road for our diverse facilities. I also want to thank Cathie Scotkovsky, our school principal, for her efforts to introduce me to our school and its many activities throughout the year. It’s going to take me a while to figure out all the different spaces, corridors and classrooms, but I will in time. Thanks also to Deacon Chick O’Leary who has helped me in so many ways to set up my personal and office space. As you might imagine, there have been many questions about how things are done and where things are here. My thanks to all of our many office receptionists for their patience and assistance as I learn the ropes. Lastly, I want to thank Dr. Carolyn Edwards, chairperson of our Parish Pastoral Council, and all of her assistants who helped with the hospitality that was offered after all of the Masses my first weekend here. Please know how much I appreciated your time, service and goodness.

I wish you a great week ahead and relaxing rest of the summer.

CALLED BY GOD Today's scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the "shepherd and a dresser of sycamores" (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out "two by two" (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God "destined us for adoption" (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God's living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A NAME TO STAY ON THE LIST.

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the goal of St. Eugene to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those

parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us.

However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes.

We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission.

We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner.

Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.

Thank you for your patience regarding this process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry's eldest daughter, Mary, restored the "old religion" in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called "Bloody Mary" for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called "recusants," from a Latin word meaning "refuse," since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim "Recusancy" as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

summer travel.

You can always access Mass times via

the internet at: www.Masstimes.org

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

Your parish doesn’t get

two weeks off with pay. Please remember

to send in your envelope even if you

are on vacation.

Find St. Eugene on Facebook!

NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS There is a need for Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers for the Sunday 7:00 am Mass. Some of these lectors and Eucharistic Ministers cover the 9:30 am monthly Altar & Rosary Society and/or the Family School Mass. Please consider becoming a Lector or Eucharistic Minister to help your parish. You must be a parishioner of the parish and have made your confirmation. There would be one class for you to attend before being mandated. If you are interested, please call the rectory and leave your name and phone number. Someone from the rectory will return your call.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

The RCIA is a process by which one enters the Catholic Church through

prayer, study, and discussion.

This class is designed for those who are: not baptized; baptized in another denomination;

or baptized Catholic but did not make their First Holy Communion or Confirmation.

We meet on Thursdays at 7 pm in the

Rectory from October 4, 2018 until the Easter Vigil 2019.

For more information, please contact:

The rectory office at: 773/7756659 and someone will call you back.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
