COVID-19 Updates

“We continue to experience the impact of

the COVID-19 virus in many ways in our

local community. As the number of cases

and deaths are increasing with the most

recent variant, we must rely on our faith in

Jesus and the guidance of the Church to

help us navigate these challenging times

that have brought pain, confusion, and

division. Let us remember always that it is

Christ who heals and unites.”

+Thomas J. Olmsted

Bishop of Phoenix

While it isn’t required, we strongly suggest

the use of masks while on campus.

Self-Sacrificing Love: How To Keep The Devil

Out of Your Head

And How To Keep The

Hardness Out of Your Heart I referenced a great article last week entitled

How To Keep The Devil Out of Your Head

by Ray Sullivan and he begins in this way:

“In today’s troubled world, so many people

have so many weird ideas about the family,

gender, politics, money, etc. All of this stems

from a very skewed and upside-down view of

reality. It wasn’t too long ago that good people

could agree on what was good and what was

evil. But nowadays, that doesn’t seem to be

true. And if that isn’t bad enough, a lot of

people really believe that you are full of hate

if you dare to disagree with them, and then

they won’t talk to you anymore. Isaiah 5:20

famously says ‘Woe to those who call good

evil and evil good.’”

In light this and of in light of today’s readings,

we see how they are of huge significance in

the Bible, for they lay out some of the funda-

mentals of life, human anthropology and the

Christian vision of marriage. It is fitting for us

to take a careful and attentive walk through

this brief but highly significant passage from

the second chapter of the book of Genesis

regarding marriage and in our Gospel reading.

How do these words of Jesus affect you? Jesus

speaks these words directly to you…yes, you!

“This Is My Body Given Up For You”

These beautiful words are of

course Our Lord’s from the

Last Supper and repeated at

every Mass and in essence

also at every wedding.

This past year we have had a record number of

weddings here at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish.

Fr. Tommy Lane, a great Irish priest, explains

the beauty of Christian Marriage in this way:

“They say that the wedding lasts one day, but

that the marriage for the rest of life.

“When a couple gets married, it has been said

both go back to school again, to the school of

marriage. It can be a challenge. They begin to

learn again, to learn to love each other in a

deeper way, joining themselves to each other

to become one, as our first reading stated (Gen

2:24), without losing their individuality.

“Two becoming one doesn’t happen over-

night. It is something that is learned and that

the couple becomes better at as they share

their married life together. Becoming one

means loving each other, sharing their lives

with each other, and taking each other into

consideration always. Becoming one means

getting rid of all selfishness because there is

no room for selfishness in marriage.

“If selfishness is not rooted out or creeps in

later on, it is sure to cause problems. If God

blesses the marriage with children, then the

children are taken into consideration in all that

the couple do. So for these many reasons I

have heard it said that marriage is a school of

love.” However, the Devil also knows this….

Check out Ray’s fascinating article. Copies

are available at the Church entrance.

Fr. Kilian, Sr. Mary Beverly, our Deacons,

Parish Staff, Disciples and Volunteers.

We celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul September 27

th.

We reflect that for Vincent, love is always a very concrete, very practical. It is love in practice. “Let us love God, my brother and sisters,” he urges, “let us love

God, but let it be with the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brows.” We are called to follow Christ as servants of the poor. Servants get their hands dirty. They labor long and hard and engage in difficult tasks, visiting the sick and the elderly in their homes, feeding the street people, serving the hungry, helping the widow and orphan. They are on the front lines ministering to the poor. As St. Vincent says, we must first do and then teach.

As St. Vincent de Paul preached the Good News to the poor, may we continue to be effective instruments of Christ to those most in need, may our hearts be filled with compassion and love.

Happy Reading!

A Note from Deacon Larry

A special THANK YOU to Fr’s. Bartell, McGaffin and McCaffrey for their guidance and leadership and to all the great parishioners of SES for the support I received these past 12+ years. It was my honor and privilege to be assigned to SES

and serve here. It is a bittersweet blessing to be appointed to serve at OLL the parish I was at when ordained. I will miss the many friends I

have made at SES, but I will not miss the drive on Bell Road I make 3-5 times a week. I leave you

with a grateful heart and a prayer I say every morning and night. “Lord, let me always

remember, that ministry is not about me, but about the one being served.”

Christ’s Peace & Love, Deacon Larry

To walk slowly, to breathe, to be silent, anticipat-ing her Son, Emmanuel; who is God with us.

Want to ready your soul, or keep on doing all that busy stuff; and wonder where Christmas went.

Come join us to learn to pray with Mary...
