F rom the Great Fathers From a treatise on John by St. Augustine The Lord tells us: I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In these few words he gives a com-mand and makes a promise. Let us do what he commands so that we may not blush to covet what he promises and to hear him say on the day of judgement: “I laid down certain conditions for obtaining my promises. Have you fulfilled them?” If you say: “What did you command, Lord our God?” he will tell you: “I commanded you to follow me. You asked for advice on how to enter into life. What life, if not the life about which it is written: With you is the fountain of life?”

The Diocesan Services Fund helps us continue Christ’s mission by support-ing works that one parish cannot undertake alone. All funds are used for the purposes described in the DSF literature. No funds are used for administration, legal fees, or other purposes. Fur-thermore, no funds are used to set-tle abuse lawsuits and none are pending, in any case, thanks be to God. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is called “Laetare Sunday,” a term that comes from the first word of the Entrance Antiphon: Laetare, Jerusalem… that is, “Rejoice, Jerusalem.” Today is thus a day of special rejoicing, as the Church approaches Holy Week. One of the distinctive elements of this day is the use of rose vest-ments, and the possibility of reintroducing flowers into the sanctuary. Today is also a day of encouragement. It is as if the Church, aware of how diffi-cult even small penances can be for modern man, is telling us to “hang in there,” and be re-energized for the final weeks of Lent. We are invited to keep our “eyes on the prize,” which is a deeper union with Christ.
Today, the Church expresses hope and joy in the midst of our Lenten fasts and pen-ances. The distinctive liturgical color indi-cates a glimpse of the joy that awaits us at Easter, just before we enter into the som-ber days of Passiontide. Not only is the color rose a sign of joy, re-minding us to be mindful that beyond the suffering of the Passion of Christ, and our penances and sacrifices, there lies the promise of the Resurrection, but it also indi-cates something more. Rose is the color of the sky immediately before sunrise. The rose vestments encourage us to keep look-ing for Christ, who is the light of the world.
In days gone by, Laetare Sunday was also a day for visiting one’s “mother church,” the place of one’s baptism. A family trip to see where mom or dad was baptized could make for an interesting outing for their children.

Continued from front page… Let us do now what he commands. Let us follow in the footsteps of the Lord. Let us throw off the chains that pre-vent us from following him. Who can throw off these shackles without the aid of the one addressed in these words: You have broken my chains? Another psalm says of him: The Lord frees those in chains, the Lord raises up the downcast. Those who have been freed and raised up follow the light. The light they follow speaks to them: I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness. The Lord gives light to the blind. Brethren, that light shines on us now, for we have had our eyes anointed with the eye-salve of faith. His saliva was mixed with earth to anoint the man born blind. We are of Adam’s stock, blind from our birth; we need him to give us light. He mixed saliva with earth, and so it was prophesied: Truth has sprung up from the earth. He himself has said: I am the way, the truth and the life. We shall be in possession of the truth when we see face to face. This is his promise to us. Who would dare to hope for something that God in his goodness did not choose to promise or bestow? We shall see face to face. The Apostle says: Now I know in part, now obscurely through a mirror, but then face to face. John the Apostle says in one of his letters: Dearly beloved, we are now children of God, and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be. We know that when he is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. This is a great promise. If you love me, follow me. “I do love you,” you protest, “but how do I follow you?” If the Lord your God said to you: “I am the truth and the life,” in your desire for truth, in your love for life, you would certainly ask him to show you the way to reach them. You would say to yourself: “Truth is a great reality, life is a great reality; if only it were possible for my soul to find them!”

How to go to Confession
In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.
R i te of Reconci l iat ion
Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace Penitent: Thanks be to God Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
Pasos básicos para confesarse
Entra al confesionario sin miedo, confiando en la misericordia de Jesús: Penitente: Ave María Purísima. Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pecado.

Safe Environment Training
Safe Haven training will replace VIRTUS The training consists of three vignette style training videos that is approximately 60 minutes and will include a criminal background check that must be completed. These train-ings are available in English and Spanish We will no longer offer live trainings, all Safe Environment trainings will only be available online.
All new employees and volunteers will complete the Safe Haven online training program instead of VIRTUS PGC train-ing. The turnaround time for approval may be approxi-mately two weeks or less. All individuals must complete the training and complete a background check prior to the start of employment and/or volunteer service. The five-year anniversary date is still in place, individuals who recently attended VIRTUS will not be due to complete refresher trainings until they have met their five-year anni-versary date. As the five-year anniversary date is met, individuals will need to log into CMGConnect with their previous personal VIRTUS user id and 1234 as the password. Once the individ-ual logs into their CMGConnect account, they will be able to change their password. If they do not remember the user id, they may contact the following:
Daphne Woods at 800.228.6108 ext. 2375 or [email protected] CMG at [email protected]
The following individuals below will now be required to complete Safe Haven online training as well: Individuals who have never attended training. Individuals who are currently due for refresher training
and had not attended VIRTUS training. Individuals who are currently due and have not at-
tended VIRTUS training. Individuals who are out of compliance or past due.

April is the Month of the Holy Spirit The month of April is dedicated to the Holy Spirit, since Pente-cost usually falls in that month. To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess that the Holy Spirit is one of the persons of the Holy Trinity, consubstantial with the Father and the Son: "with the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glori-fied." (Catechism of the Catholic Church) The Holy Spirit is the Person of Love in the life of God. He is also like a breath, an aspiration of infinite Love, from which we draw the breath of life. On the day of Pentecost the Divine Spirit communicated such an abundance of life to the whole Church that to symbolize it "there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind com-ing, and it filled the whole house where they (the Apostles) were sitting."
