It led the magi as they journeyed from their home in the east (probably Persia). Not everyone accepted the light (Herod), but it shone forth for all. The light of Christ continues to be revealed all over the world, just as it was during Pauls time. We are all members of the same body, equally illuminated by the light and promise of Christ. How can you and your community be welcoming to all who are drawn to the light of Christ?

January 5, 2020 Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

-DID YOU KNOW…-the Feast of Epiphany is on January 6. Epiphany means manifestation. This feast day cele-

brates the arrival in Bethlehem of the Three Wise Men (Kings) known as the Magi. Their names were Caspar,

Melchior and Balthazar. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, representing the threefold role of

the Messiah as King, Prophet and Priest (respectively). Their manifestation to the Saviour is significant because it

is when God made his appearance to the world. It is believed their relics are held in the magnificent cathedral in

Cologne.

Living The Word of God:

From our awareness of this wondrous gift that is the Eucharist, and of the Lord's command that it be celebrated in his memory, arise some questions: Am I, in fact, putting the Word of God into practice by participating fully every week in Sunday mass? Do I allow other activities to take priority over my sacred obligation? Do I take time to prepare for mass by reading in advance the mass readings, pondering the many blessings for which to give thanks, or considering the needs I wish to place before the altar of God's mercy?

Light. Without it we would not be able to see. It is no accident that in the beginning the first thing

God created was light. And it was good. One special property of light is that it is not diminished

by the number of people using it. No matter how many people are already outside on a sunny day,

there is no less sunlight for the next person on the scene. Whether the light is from the sun, from a

star, from God, or from Christ, it is available to all and diminished by none. Isaiah speaks of the

light shining forth from Jerusalem after the Chosen People returned from exile. It guided them

back home, but it was also a beacon for people beyond the sea or across the desert. They were in-

vited to witness the glory of God as well. Similarly, the star over Bethlehem was not only visible to the people of

Judah. It led the magi as they journeyed from their home in the east (probably Persia). Not everyone accepted the

light (Herod), but it shone forth for all. The light of Christ continues to be revealed all over the world, just as it was

during Paul’s time. We are all members of the same body, equally illuminated by the light and promise of Christ.

How can you and your community be welcoming to all who are drawn to the light of Christ?
