A CHRISTMAS REPRISE

The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.”

The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth.

In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.”

THE ROAD TO GOD

There is but one road to lead us to God—humility; all other ways would only lead astray, even were

they fenced in with all virtues.

—Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux

BAPTIMS

Register at the rectory or call 847-623-5050 for complete details. Baptismal dates requested are confirmed once all requirements are met.

Parents and godparents must take a Baptismal Preparation Class; held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the church for both parents and godparents. Register at the rectory.

Next Session: February 4th and March 3rd

Church Etiquette Please be considerate and arrive to Church before the Mass begins. It is considered disrespectful to arrive after the Mass has begun. The opening and closing of doors, the movement of people to their

pews and the disturbing of people to accommodate people arriving late is very distracting to some very

important moments in the Mass.

RENEW MY CHURCH

Thank you for your participation as we have been discerning the best church, parish and school structures to revitalize the greater ministerial vitality of our Catholic communities.

Over the past several months, the Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team, which includes representatives from all of the parishes in our grouping, met to review and discern the future structure for our area. Based on their meetings and discussions, the group submitted a report to an Archdiocesan Commission, which includes representatives from across the Archdiocese.

Based on the Grouping Team’s feedback report, as well as other considerations, the Commission will present a recommendation to Cardinal Cupich and Archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council.

We want to invite you to join us for a community meeting where all parishioners and school families from across our grouping will gather together to learn an important update and possible decision, as well as discuss next steps for our area.

“The Time of No Room: Thomas Merton’s Reflections on the Past Century” Pauline Viviano, Professor of Theology Emer ita, Loyola University, will discuss “The Time of No Room: Thomas Merton’s Reflections on the Past Century” at 2 p.m. Sun-day, Feb. 16, at the Rectory Assembly of Immaculate Conception Parish, 7211 W. Talcott, Chicago. Pauline is a long-time member of our Chicago Chapter-ITMS who has given four presentations previously, most recently ""Revitalizing our World with Merton’s Understanding of Contemplation." Description: "In Raids on the Unspeakable, Merton speaks of “the time of the end as a time of no room.” In the tradi-tion of the prophets of the Old Testament he looks under-neath the affluence of his age at the problems deeply in-grained in America. It is a harsh assessment, but it ends on a positive note. We will reflect upon what Merton has to say about American culture and how we can move from despair to hope and from hatred to love." Freewill offering ($5 suggested) and refreshments will be served. For more information, call Mike at 773-447-3989 or visit https://ccitms.blogspot.com/2020/01/february-16-2020-pauline-viviano-on.html.

Speaker Series at Carmel Catholic High School

Carmel Catholic invites you to attend the Spiritus Speaker Series. Join us to be inspired, to grow in faith and to encounter Christ. All events are free of charge, open to the public and held at Carmel Catholic High School.

Jen Kramer and the Year of Love Project #yearoflove –Thursday, February 13, 6:30 pm Jen Kramer, CCHS '88, is an average everyday human with one caveat, she has a gigantic heart. As Jen looked at ways to best impact her year in 2018, she created the “Year of Love” as a way to share and express her love for all people (both those she knew and had yet to know) on her social media channels. What started as Jen’s ambitious New Year resolution, the Year of Love has evolved as a social experiment to be Christ-like in our world.

'Open Line', Questions of the Faith with Mr. Mark Plaiss and CCHS Theology Faculty – Thursday, March 12, 6:30 pm Students at Carmel Catholic enjoy the opportunity to ask any and all questions about the faith in a format called "Open Line." They gather together during class time once per month and Theology department faculty members share answers rooted in the authentic teaching of the Church. The resulting conversations are lively and thought-provoking. Deacon Mark Plaiss and other members of the Carmel Catholic Theology Faculty will host an "Open Line" style event for adults interested in asking questions and engaging in dialogue in a friendly, informative environment. All are welcome.

Ready, Set, Renew! It's decision time. Do we stay or do we go? I am hopeful that St. Dismas church is staying. After all, it's supposed to be renew, not remove! Of course, I don't know what the decision is, I have no insider information.

Regardless of the decision, the parishes of St. Dismas and St. Anastasia will merge, both staying one way or another, to form a new combined parish. One way (the preferred way) is the church buildings of both parishes remain open as places of worship. Another way is that the church building of one of the parishes (either St. Dismas or St. Anastasia) would close. Either way, the congregation of both parishes would merge to form a new parish. Staffing decisions would be made to consolidate, cut back, optimize, economize. What will the name of the new parish be? Who will be the pastor? How many associates and deacons will there be? How will mass schedules be affected? What about the clubs, committees, groups, programs? So many details and questions to be answered...

The details will be worked out... given time. There will be a transition period, how long is to be determined. Long term success will be measured by how well three mission imperatives are met: 1) Make Disciples, 2) Build Communities, 3) Inspire Witness. It may take a long time to determine whether these mission imperatives have been met.

However, for me short term success will be measured by who stays! How many parishioners stick around? Do I stay or do I go? Each one of us will be faced with that decision. Each of us reacts to change differently, in our own way. Please be prayerful and respectful to each of our parishioners, and for the parishioners of the other congregation. I urge all of you to be prayerful, talk to and listen to the Lord, seek guidance from the Holy Spirit to discern God's will.

Prayerfully yours, Mark Matias
