An awesome program available on formed is the Augustine Institute’s “Stations of the Cross” by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, narrated by Dr. Christopher Blum. This prayerful reflection is accompanied by the Schola Cantorum of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Littleton, CO, chanting the traditional Catholic hymn Stabat Mater, in Latin, which depicts the loving presence of Our Sorrowful Mother, sharing in the suffering of Christ at the foot of the cross. Take advantage of this audio on your commute, at home, or anywhere you find the time, to enrich your prayer during Lent or throughout the year, and better unite yourself to the Passion of Christ. FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKMarch 17th – Second Sunday of Lent

Gospel Reading: Luke 9:28b-36Background on the Gospel Reading:

In today’s Gospel, the voice from heaven speaks to the disciples saying, “Listen to him.” The Transfiguration was a focused moment for the disciples when they heard God speaking to them and experienced Jesus in glory. They most certainly left this focused moment with a new appreciation for the importance of Jesus’ words even if they did not yet understand everything that he had taught them. During Lent, we are invited to consider our attentiveness to Jesus and to one another. In the pace and noise that often characterizes everyday life, how well do we listen to one another? What opportunities do we have for quiet prayer?

March 18 – St. Cyril of JerusalemBishop & Doctor of the Church

Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem, was banished from his see on three occasions. With St. Athanasius and others, he belongs to the great champions of faith in the fight against Arianism. Famous as a teacher and preacher, he has left a series of catechetical instructions that constitute a priceless heirloom from Christian antiquity. Of the twenty-four extant discourses, nineteen were directed to catechumens during Lent as a preparation for Baptism, while five so-called mystagogical instructions were given during Easter time to make the mysteries of Christianity better known to those already baptized.

March 19 – St. Joseph, Blessed Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster-father of Jesus, was probably born in Bethlehem and probably died in Nazareth. His important mission in God’s plan of salvation was “to legally insert Jesus Christ into the line of David from whom, according to the prophets, the Messiah would be born, and to act as his father and guardian” (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy). Most of our information about St. Joseph comes from the opening two chapters of St. Matthew’s Gospel. No words of his are recorded in the Gospels; he was the “silent” man. We find no devotion to St. Joseph in the early Church. It was the will of God that the Virgin Birth of Our Lord be first firmly impressed upon the minds of the faithful. He was later venerated by the great saints of the Middle Ages. Pius IX (1870) declared him patron and protector of the universal family of the Church.Sources: loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/sunday-connection/second-sunday-of-lent-cycle-c-sunday-connection; catholicculture.org/culture/

BEING PRO LIFE: RACISMAre you familiar yet with this new free resource? Each month features an interview with someone personally affected by a different Respect Life issue, with a call to action on how to get more involved. Each topic includes an article and a link to an engaging 20 minute video interview uploaded on the web, or you can listen to the full interview as a podcast. You can simply spread the word about this link in your parish bulletins, or even use the videos as discussion starters in youth ministry or adult education. This month is an eye-opening interview on the issue of racism that permeates the fabric of our modern society.
