"It is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would
sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed
would sprout and grow, he knows not how." In today's
parable about the kingdom of God, Jesus gives us the image
of something that grows "of its own accord." Yes, the man
does the initial planting of the seed, but the real miracle of
the seed turning into a full-grown plant happens without the
intervention of the farmer. God makes it happen.
So too, with the kingdom of God, we are called to
participate to a certain extent, but also to allow God to work.
We first do our part when we "scatter seed" of faith, by
living out the baptism that made us children of this glorious
kingdom. But even as we make our daily choices to follow
Christ and live as his children--with all the actions, decision,
and commitments that entails--we still get to enjoy the
miracle of sitting back and watching God's providence in
action.
Just think of the beauty of creation and the seasons. Think
about the gift of a newborn baby in the arms of its parents.
Think about the surprising situations that resolved
themselves in our relationships, jobs, and families. Think of
the encouraging stories of forgiveness, reconciliation, and
conversion that we have heard or experienced firsthand.
Think of the blessings that have somehow come out of the
trials and tribulations of our lives. Think of all the sick,
poor, and lonely who have been comforted by believers.
Think of the moments of peace and insight that we have
received in prayer. So it is that God makes our seeds "sprout
and grow" when we sincerely take that first step of faith to
enter his kingdom.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 14, 2015
Dear Parishioners:
The school year 2014-2015 has quickly come to an end.
We have completed our 52nd celebration of St. Columba
School as we continue in our pursuit of academic excellence,
faith formation and spirit of service.
Our students studied hard and persevered through academic
performance. They have successfully met many trials and
challenges, they have grown a lot, and have kept God as the
center of their lives.
Our parents and guardians have entrusted their children in
our care. They have given us the opportunity to be a part of
your child’s life. They have always strived to provide the
best education and safe environment for their children.
My dedicated and outstanding faculty and staff, for their
tireless efforts, professionalism and unconditional support
are a blessing to the entire school community. They gave so
much inspiration, especially to Mrs. Patricia Bulcavage and
Mrs. Joyce Scanlon for 35 years of dedicated teaching
and love for St. Columba. We wish you well but you will
surely be missed.
Thank you to our pastor, Father Gary for his leadership,
prayers and spiritual guidance throughout the school year.
Last but not least, to you our dear parishioners for your
continued support, prayers and gift of time and service. You
are part of our school community. We look forward to
welcoming 2015-2016, stronger, still united and resilient to
all the challenges and opportunities that will come our way.
We look forward to all the aspirations and inspirations the
next school year will bring.
There is truly a sense of pride and resilience being part of
St. Columba. I am privileged to have served you all.
May you find fun, rest and peace this summer. Please keep us
in your prayers and send us prospective new families and
students. We are steadily progressing towards our
enrollment goal of 220. We have a few but limited openings.
We are closed for 5th Grade and 8th Grade. Our school office
will be open until June 26, from 9-4pm; July 6-24 ,August 10
-21 Monday-Thursdays 9-3 and Fridays 9-12; August 24
onwards 9-4. Contact us at [email protected] or 301
567 6212 ext. 2. August 31, 2015 is our first day of school.
Be safe. God bless and see you all to welcome a school year!!!!
Be happy for the good Lord is looking after you. Tina

MAKE THIS A SUMMER OF SERVICE
WITH CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE
ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON
ST MARIA’S MEALS
This food truck serves meals 3 times a week in different communities in our area. On Tuesday evenings, volunteers serve families in the Camp Springs area. On Wednesday evenings, volunteers serve people who are homeless in front of our downtown headquarters. Bright and early on Friday mornings, volunteers serve breakfast to immigrants who are day laborers in the Silver Spring/Langley Park area. Choose your spot to spend 2 hours feeding the hungry and thirsty-once, once a week, or once a month.
SHELTER HOSPITALITY VOLUNTEERS
The staff who run our 3 low-barrier emergency shelters in DC welcome the help of volunteers to dole out “soup, soap, and hope” to 1,100 people each night. Sign up for a once-a-week/6-month gig. You’ll be amazed what a difference you make to those with no place of their own to call home.
WELCOME HOME RE-ENTRY MENTOR
Become a mentor to someone returning to the community from incarceration. Studies show that a mentor who provides encouragement and support makes all the difference in preventing recidivism. We will train you and provide ongoing support, but you already know what to do: be kind, be compassionate, be caring, be optimistic, be reliable. Mentors are at least 25 years old and commit for an hour a week for a year. You will make a BIG difference in someone’s life.
ESOL INTENSIVE
Catholic Charities’ center in Gaithersburg is offering intensive ESOL classes this summer 4 nights a week in July. We need instructors, conversation partners, and helpers. We’ll train you in June. Commit to helping at least once a week.
Catholic Charities is helping St. John the Evangelist in Clinton open ESOL classes this Fall. We need instructors and helpers. Come to the first volunteer meeting June 16th at 7 pm.
CALENDAR OF MONTHLY AND WEEKLY
PROJECTS
Each month, Hope Corps volunteers lead people in short projects that make a big difference in a few hours: clean up a shelter, pack breakfast bags (Cup of Joe) for people who stay in our shelters, help load up food packages, and more. Do one, do them all.
