Universal Prayer O Lord, hear us, we pray, O Lord, give us your love!

Psalm 95 If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Merici Chapel…Think of how many times Jesus asked His disciples to come with Him to a quiet or deserted place to pray. Even to go into a boat and push away from the shoreline. No, Jesus is not asking us to get into a boat -- just come to Merici Chapel, a quiet place to pray and talk to Him. No distractions or noise -- just you and Jesus. This Week’s Liturgy

Please check the article in this bulletin detailing St Charles modifications in liturgical practices, effective immediately, in response to the COVID-19 Flu outbreak.

For those who keep count, our fourth (of the season) Lenten Fish Fry will be offered this Friday, March 20, from 4:00 till 7:00pm in the Corrigan Gym. Baked or fried fish, shrimp, fries, cabbage and noodles, coleslaw, and lots of extra fixin’s plus great pies for dessert. Friendly service, dine-in or take-out, and it’s all yours at reasonable prices. See you Friday! Our Soup and Sacraments Lenten Program continues this Monday, March 16. Please come and share a simple Lenten meal of homemade soup, bread, and a beverage. “Dinner is served” from 5:00 till 6:30pm in the Lower Parish Hall. There is no charge, but any free will offering will go to help our Cyrenian Ministry feed the homeless and those without. Then stay for the 7:00pm Mass. Father Matthew Cortnik (parochial vicar at Communion of Saints in Cleveland Heights and formerly a seminarian-intern at St Charles), will be celebrant and homilist. Father Matt will preach on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

* * * * * This Tuesday’s statewide primary election reminds us that another national election cycle is underway. Sadly, our political dialogue in recent years has become particularly contentious. Rather than discussing issues and ideas in a rational and calm way, the volume rises and friendships are threatened. I get lots of advice about politics around election time. “Why don’t you endorse him/her?”, “Why don’t you denounce that candidate?” I hear it all! History and politics are favorite topics of mine. For many years, my particular hero has been Harry Truman. He was President when I was born (not that I remember his time in office!). I have always admired his Midwestern common sense, knowledge of history, devotion to family, simple religious faith, and love of country. So as a Church, and as your pastor, what are we permitted to do and what am I allowed to say? Because we are recognized as a “501(c)3 non-profit organization” the Internal Revenue has some strict guidelines when it comes to Churches and partisan politics. Churches may share the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.. Authentic Catholic teaching on political responsibility, human life, human rights, justice and peace should be shared widely and effectively. Churches may encourage “get out the vote” and voter registration drives. Churches may support or oppose ballot measures, referenda, initiatives, bond issues, levies. Churches may sponsor non-partisan voter education. Churches may not endorse or oppose candidates, political parties, or groups of candidates. Churches may not authorize the distribution of partisan political literature on parish property. Churches may not invite only “selected” partisan candidates to meet or campaign on parish property.

Happy St Patrick’s Day
