St. Charles Borromeo Church February 19, 2017
Don’t forget the Ladies Guild Day of Recollection this Monday, February 20, 8:30am to 2:30pm, with Father Doug Brown, in the Lower Parish Hall. The theme is “Our Lady of Fatima, 100th Anniversary.” It’s Presidents’ Day, so there’s no school--the Charles
Ave parking lot is all yours! Check the article in this bulletin for details. When you were younger, did something happen and you never managed to get confirmed? Are you an adult now, but would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, the third of the Sacraments of Initiation? Then we have an opportunity for you! St Charles is offering an Adult Confirmation Class. There will be two one-hour sessions, scheduled on two successive Sundays, March 5 and 12, from 1:00 till 2:00pm each day. You will then be scheduled for Confirmation, here at St Charles, with Bishop Roger Gries, on Sunday, April 2, at 2:30pm. Pastoral Minister/Adult Education Coordinator Brian Pelcin will conduct the two one-hour sessions and he will help you with any details. Just call the Parish Office (440-884-3030) by Ash Wednesday, March 1, and let us know that you plan to attend. Please share this information about our Adult Confirmation Class with family, friends, or neighbors who might be interested. Lent 2017 will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 1. We will offer Stations of the Cross, extra times for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions), Friday Fish Fries, and other spiritual and community activities. Since I became pastor in 1987, we have always offered a Lenten Parish Retreat. That Retreat has taken a variety of forms over the years. This year we are offering a unique, two-step, Lenten Retreat program. On five successive Lenten Wednesdays, March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5, we will begin with a simple supper of soup, bread, and a beverage, served in the Corrigan Gym from 5:00 till 7:00pm. The three Big Ideas of Lent are: prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. In the spirit of fasting, we share a simple meal. Although there is no charge, we welcome your free-will donation, as almsgiving, that will go to feed the poor in the many “give food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty” locales where our parishioners volunteer to help the needy. After the Lenten Soup Supper, you are invited to prayer at the Wednesday 7:00pm Mass. We have invited a guest priest-celebrant each evening who will offer a special reflection for our Lenten Parish Retreat. Please mark your calendars now, Wednesdays of Lent: Soup Supper 5:00 till 7:00pm with Lenten Parish Retreat 7:00pm Mass to follow. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) will be offered in all churches of our Diocese on Wednesday March 15, 5:00 till 8:00pm.
Looking for a Mardi Gras Party before Lent begins? Why not attend Mardi Gras 2017, sponsored by St Mary Seminary, and scheduled for this Friday, February 24 from 5:00 till 8:00pm? St Mary Seminary is located on the grounds of the Center for Pastoral Leadership, 28700 Euclid Avenue, Wickliffe, OH 44092. The evening will feature authentic New Orleans style cuisine. And the price is right: $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12. More info needed? Call 440-943-7600 for details or with questions.
Merici Chapel… How many times in your life have you said, “I know I should have called” or “I was busy—I forgot, or I just don’t have the time right now—maybe later.” We could go on and on making excuses for our actions or lack thereof. What excuse will you give to Jesus when you meet Him and He asks, “Why didn’t you stop and see me? I was waiting for you in Merici Chapel, just for us to spend some time together and talk.”
LADIES GUILD DAY OF RECOLLECTION

2017 FIRST STEP PROGRAMS: CONTINUING EDUCATION REGARDING
MARRIAGE & DIVORCE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Attempting to pick up the pieces of one’s life after the tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person’s relationship with God and the Church. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do?
The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland offers its First Step Program to help individuals deal with these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen their relationship with God & the Church. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching regarding marriage, divorce & remarriage. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain the resources they offer to the divorced.
Everyone is welcome to: Deepen knowledge of the Church’s teaching on marriage… Learn about the Church’s ministry to the divorced/separated in the Diocese… Hear about the annulment process and how to submit a case…
Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to strengthen In any endeavor, taking the “first step” is always the most difficult.
