RESPECT LIFE BABY BOTTLE PROJECT

During Respect Life month in October, our parish will be participating in The Virtual Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Since we are not handing out baby bottles due to coronavirus concerns, if you would like to participate, please write a check to The Women’s Center. Please drop it in the collection basket in the back of the churches and we will send them to this wonderful organization, which assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies.

Donations can be made on their website: GOTWC.org or call 773–794–1313 and make a donation. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984.

MARRIED 50 YEARS IN 2020?

Please call the Pastoral Center or the Rectory if you were married in 1970 and are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary this year. Even though we cannot gather together to celebrate, the Archdiocese would like to send you a certificate in recognition of this event and the 2020 and 2021 Jubilarians will be invited to celebrate together in 2021.

The Archdiocesan Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass that was scheduled for Sunday, September 13 was canceled because of the pandemic.

VIRTUAL BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3

FOR ALL ANIMALS

Blessed are you, Lord God,maker of all living creatures.

On the fifth and sixth days of creation, you called forth fish in the sea,

birds in the air, and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all animals

his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this animal.

By the power of your love, enable [him or her] to live according to your plan.

May we always praise youfor all your beauty in creation.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.

Franciscan Pet Blessing

We usually honor Saint Francis of Assisi with a Blessing of Animals in October around his Feast Day. Because we cannot gather together, here is a prayer you can offer for your pets.

SAINT THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873—1897)

October 1

“The cornerstone’s dated 1872, but the stained glass is much later,” explained the pastor, astonished when his visitor accurately dated it to just before the Great Depression, explaining, “The window for the Little Flower”—Thérèse’s nickname—“gives it away.” From her canonization in 1925, her statues and windows adorn most churches where European immigrants worshiped. Entering Carmel at fifteen, victim of tuberculosis at twenty–four, Thérèse proposed her “Little Way” to sanctity: doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. Thus ordinary Catholics, many of whom had lost loved ones to tuberculosis, embraced her. Though she never left her cloister, this Carmelite’s spiritual communion and devoted correspondence with missionaries earned her the title Patroness of Missions. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, continuously in print since her death, chronicles her prayerful perseverance through doubt and caused her to be the youngest person ever named a Doctor of the Church. Countless physical healings and spiritual conversions testify to her fulfillment of her deathbed promise: “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth!”

FAMILIAR INSIGHTS

Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings.

People complain God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly.

Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so.

In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work—but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

ON OLD QUOTES, FOUR COFFEE POTS, AND ONE COMFORTING PARABLE

©2020 By John B. Reynolds

([email protected])

Years ago, I came upon a quote I’ve never forgotten. This may not be exact, but roughly, There

are two kinds of people in the world: those who build things up, and those who tear things down.

I hadn’t thought of it for years, but the coffee

pots brought it back. Yeah. While out running at dawn recently, I was surprised to see four small glass coffee pots lined up at the base of a fence near the Metra tracks at the Gladstone Park stop. “Odd,” I thought. And yet, were I a commuter in need of a small carafe, here are four for the taking.

Until days later, I mean, because that’s when I found the four little coffee pots all smashed to pieces. Shards of glass everywhere. The weapon was unknown. A baseball bat? A brick? Regardless, the

instrument did its job, and what had been a pleasant curiosity in my mind was now reduced to just so much brokenness on the lonely curb of Life’s shattered existence (sorry… I digress, as poetically as I’m able). There are two kinds of people in the world: those who build things up, and those who tear things down.

Compare this action, however, to the beauty that Paul gives us today. “If there is any encouragement in Christ,” the apostle writes, “any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others.” I’m guessing that whoever smashed the coffee pots doesn’t read Philippians much.

At least didn’t, perhaps, and that’s the true beauty of the readings. First, God says that if we turn away from sin to embrace the good, we shall live. It’s more about where we’re headed, then, than where we’ve been. And Jesus makes the same case with the parable of the two sons. Here, a father tells both of his boys to go work in the vineyard. The first says no, but later, goes. The second says OK, but later, doesn’t. This proves a brilliant teaching moment, for when Jesus asks the priests and elders which of the sons did the father’s will, the only answer they can give is, “The first.”

This prompts Jesus to tell them that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before they are, because when John came to these sinners calling them to repent, they did, when the religious elite heard the same message, but did not change. I don’t know about you, but I take huge comfort in this parable.

I’ve sinned against my God countless times. Think the Seven Deadly Sins, in one fashion or another. But every new day is a new day. Every breath we take is a new chance for good, a new chance to build up the kingdom. I pray I always remember the coffee pots. I pray I always remember, too, that there are two kinds of people in the world…

RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Many people are searching for spiritual meaning and a deeper relationship with God. Often they feel drawn to the Catholic faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process by which adults explore the Catholic faith and ordinarily become members of the Church.

The program consists of several months of instruction in the teachings, beliefs, customs, and practices of the Catholic faith. Those who complete the process receive the sacraments, usually Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation, or a combination of those, at Easter.

WHO IS THE RCIA INTENDED FOR?· Adults and Teens who have never been baptized.· Adults and Teens who have been baptized in another Christian denomination.· Adults and Teens who were baptized Catholic, but never received First Communion or Confirmation.

Adult Classes meet on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 PM in the St. Cyprian Rectory. The program begins in October and concludes on Easter Sunday.

Teen Classes meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 PM in the St. Cyprian Rectory. The program starts in October and concludes on Easter Sunday.
