The new people of God reaches out more pointedly to all people.) Also, the Church is Jesus Christ continuing to do His work among us through people guided by the Holy Spirit whom He has reunited to the Father through baptism. I believe these descriptions of the Church are agreeable to most Christians. What distinguishes the Catholic vision of Church from most other Christians is the how of Church. It is the how of Jesus continuing to call people to faith and gift them with the new life of grace in Him. I identify two elements of this how of the Church that when fully described, distinguish the Catholic Church from most other Christian communities. The two are an earthly, Holy Spirit guided teaching authority, and the sacraments as instruments of the communication of the new life Jesus won for us. The teaching authority is founded upon Jesus’ interactions and bestowal of power on the apostles, with Peter as their leader, and the promise of the Holy Spirit given at the Last Supper. While most Christians recognize the role of the apostles and even the primacy of Peter, the Catholic distinction is the recognition of the power and authority given to the first apostolic college that has been passed on through the laying on of hands to their successors, the bishops, united around the successor of St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome. The outward signs, instituted by Jesus Christ to give grace, are the other distinguishing elements of the Catholic Church. The sacraments profess that Jesus gave His Church these seven sacraments as the means for communicating and growing the life of grace. (More next week.) Yours in Christ,

MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to return to my brief catechetical outline of the Catholic Faith, moving to the fourth of five sections. Today, it is about the Church. In teaching, I use two distinct sentences to capture the most general description, or definition, of the Church. It is God’s regathering of His people. (The first gathering was of a particular group, our spiritual ancestors, the Jews. God sent His Son into the world to establish a new people with a new relationship. (More next week.)

PRAYER REQUESTS? On Saturday, November 18, 2017, in Detroit, Fr Solanus Casey will be formally beatified (named “Blessed”). Fr Solanus was a Capuchin Franciscan friar who died in 1957, and was well-known and loved for his kindness, humility, and holiness, and who was used by God to mediate thousands of miracles during his lifetime. Most of his immediate family ended up in the Seattle area. Members of St. Cecilia parish will be attending the beatification events in Detroit, and we will gladly convey special intercession requests to the Fr. Solanus Center where he is buried. There will be a basket in the narthex until November 14th to collect prayer requests (sealed if you wish).

The Archdiocese of Seattle Mission Office & Catholic Relief Services welcomes Sally Hewett who has joined the CRS Parish Ambassador Corp. There are 25 parishes in our Archdiocese with Ambassadors. PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

In a recent article shared among teachers at

SCCS, Occupational Therapist Victoria Prooday lists six fundamentals of a healthy childhood. Her top six include: -Emotionally available parents -Clearly defined limits and guidance -Responsibilities -Balanced nutrition and adequate sleep -Movement and outdoors -Creative play, social interaction, opportunities for unstructured time Concrete suggestions to meet the six fundamentals of a healthy childhood include: -Provide nutritious food for meals and snacks -Spend one hour a day in green space: biking,

hiking, fishing, etc. -Have a daily technology-free family dinner. -Play one board game a day. -Involve your child in one chore a day (folding laundry, hanging clothes, unpacking groceries, setting the table, etc.) -Implement consistent sleep routine to ensure that your child gets lots of sleep in a technology-free bedroom. Our OCTOBER FAMILY CHALLENGE is to go on a Pumpkin Walk or visit a Corn Maze or Pumpkin Patch. Spending time doing something active with our families is fundamentally healthy.

With joy, Susan Kilbane
