As we close out this 49th year and look forward to our half century mark, we acknowledge all of the accomplishments made toward our Strategic Plan. Our strong retention over the past several years continues to drive the need to add additional space for classrooms and for our successful music program. True to the same spirit that brought St. Catherine’s here today for our children, the investment of the parents, grandparents, alumni parents and alumni continue to give strength and longevity to accomplishing our mission. We are grateful to the many people who contributed their time to the Board of Directors, the Strategic Planning Committee, the Building Committee and the Capital Campaign Committee and who have worked tirelessly to bring us toward a ground-breaking in June of 2017.

Also guided by our Strategic Plan, attention has been given to the prudent upkeep of our campus through the direction of the Building and Grounds Committee and the hiring of a Naturalist. Considerations of safety and aesthetics are high priorities at St. Catherine’s and we are grateful to all of those who have given so much of their time to keep our building and grounds looking good.

This year we have implemented a new database that will allow for more efficient and integrated electronic communication and will ultimately provide a vehicle for parents to receive and deliver information to the school more effectively.

In preparation for our 50th anniversary we created a film to capture our history and the spirit of the community. Looking at our 800 year Dominican lineage brings us to reflect on the good work of people like St. Dominic and St. Catherine. Looking within, this year we have taken time to capture some of the stories of our alumni that can be found on our website. Amazing people have come through St. Catherine’s who will definitely make this world a better place.

You are the ones whose generosity and service make a difference in this community and in the world. You are the models for all of our children. We are grateful to all the parents in our Parent Service Organization for their generous contributions and thoughtful considerations of the needs of the school as a whole. I am humbled and honored to be a member of this community.

These are very exciting times for St. Catherine’s Montessori. Guided by our Strategic Plan, in 2015-2016, St. Catherine’s continued its fundraising efforts through the Capital Campaign, “Building on the Legacy,” to fund the expansion of our facilities. Our current Timberside campus would not have existed if it were not for the generosity of our alumni families. Their foresight paved the way for my family and many others. I have been moved by the community’s enthusiasm for this expansion and their strong financial commitment to see it through.

Our faculty and staff’s commitment to educating our parent community on the value of a Montessori education has resulted in unprecedented student retention. This strong retention lead the Board of Directors to approve the establishment of a high school for our 10th to 12th grade students with the inaugural school year beginning in the fall of 2017. As our school history has shown when a new level was introduced, these trailblazers will inspire their younger classmates to continue at St. Catherine’s and experience the fullness of their Catholic Montessori education.

My involvement with the Board over the last several years has affirmed to me that in order to maintain St. Catherine’s elevated place in our city’s educational landscape, it takes our entire community at every level to believe in the mission. This belief inspires a parent to spend countless hours handcrafting an altar for our children’s masses. It is this belief that enkindles the start of after-school music and sports programs, or guides to stay well after our children have left their care to ensure the classroom environment is prepared perfectly for them the next day. It is evident that our co-foundresses’ inspiration has become our own.

As we approach our groundbreaking in June 2017, let us remember to honor the vision that Sisters Shirley and Edna Ann had nearly 50 years ago and pay it forward for future generations. To quote his eminence Cardinal DiNardo during our 50th anniversary mass, “You’re right to be proud of what’s happened here.” I hope that 50 years from now the St. Catherine’s community will reflect back at these present moments and “be proud of what’s happened here.”

Thank you for your continued support of St. Catherine’s Montessori.

Nathaniel MartinezPresident of the Board of Directors

During the second year of the Capital Campaign, “Building on the Legacy”, St. Catherine’s Montessori reached out beyond the immediate community in support of the $5.275 million Phase I of the campus expansion plan. Several key, Houston-based foundations visited our unique school and generously awarded grants to further advance progress toward addressing the most urgent needs for our students. We are grateful for the investment made by Houston foundations, which recognized St. Catherine’s Montessori as an extraordinary school in the educational landscape of Houston.

Looking ahead in 2016-2017, we anticipate celebrating 50 years of St. Catherine’s Montessori by breaking ground for this transformational campus expansion made possible through the love and generosity of our families and the Greater Houston community.

“What a blessed year we had in 2015-2016. In addition to the continued support of our community, several foundations joined our campaign, moving us closer to realizing our expansion goals.”

Annual Fund 2015-2016St. Catherine’s Montessori is a mission-driven, independent school which has held a long-standing tradition of keeping tuition affordable. The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising priority because it provides the essential funding necessary to close the gap between tuition income and the true cost of educating a child at St. Catherine’s. It supports all of the things that make St. Catherine’s Montessori remarkable: an innovative Montessori curriculum, beautifully prepared environments on a 10.4-acre campus and opportunities to recruit and retain talented faculty – the school’s most valuable asset.

Thanks to our community’s ongoing support and generosity, the Annual Fund reached a record 94% parent participation and raised a total of $176,022 or approximately 5% of the annual budget. Every gift from families, corporations and friends of St. Catherine’s Montessori goes to work immediately throughout all areas of the school to sustain a level of excellence for our students’ continued success.

We thank you for investing in the mission of St. Catherine’s Montessori and for believing in the potential of every child.

“With every passing year at St. Catherine’s we enjoy watching Juan Pablo grow in all planes of development on his journey to become a full contributor to his community and society; St. Catherine’s community provides fertile ground to embark on this journey.”

An EducationF O R L I F E

From the earliest days of St. Catherine’s Montessori, our Dominican Foundresses passionately believed in providing an education to children from diverse backgrounds, including families who required tuition assistance. They set the stage for the school’s long-held position to be affordable and inclusive.

St. Catherine’s raises additional funds biennially to provide help for families faced with financial challenges. In 2015-2016 the school distributed $39,632 in tuition assistance on a need basis to 20 children from 14 families. With the support of SCM families, alumni families and friends of St. Catherine’s, almost $50,000 in funding was raised, allowing the school to provide children with an education for life.

Great Conversations: $40,766.65

Pam Warren Scholarship Fund: $6,855

Charles Burton Scholarship Fund: $1,765

Total Tuition Assistance: $49,386.65

“Every child deserves the opportunity for a quality education. Maria Montessori worked to provide that opportunity, Sr. Edna Ann believed in that premise and St. Catherine's Montessori still strives to facilitate that goal through the tuition assistance program.”

Susan TracyHead of School

We are grateful to the benefactors who are committed to educating children from diverse backgrounds.

At the core of Montessori teaching and learning is the belief that each child possesses powerful intellectual and creative potential when presented with a developmentally appropriate environment and guidance within that environment. It is the work of the Advancement Committee to develop strategies for securing resources essential to realizing each child’s fullest potential. With unwavering commitment and generosity from the SCM community and those in the broader community, the school continues to make great strides in meeting the goals of the Strategic Plan.

With an eye toward the 50th Anniversary of St. Catherine’s Montessori, the Advancement Committee worked at strengthening communications and deepening relationships with our current families, alumni families and the broader community.

Highlights of the 2015-2016 year include:

• Defining a comprehensive communications strategy across all media for the 50th Anniversary.

• Creating a film to showcase St. Catherine’s mission, history, philosophy, culture and future.

• Rebranding the Annual Fund as the SCM Fund, Every Family for Every Child. A true reflection of theimportance of the entire community’s philanthropic support for the benefit of all the children.

• Expanding the use of social media and the school website to highlight student experiences and the school’score values.

• Extending further outreach to alumni and featuring their stories on the school website.

“I always thought it was important for my children to see me making the world a better place, to see me giving back to the community. Hopefully, they will do the same. And hopefully, the new parents [at SCM] will pick up the torch. They are the future.”

Debt Free! Not sure I need to say anymore in depicting St. Catherine’s Financial Health. As of June 2016, the remaining debt from construction of the Timberside campus has been paid. There were quite a few people responsible for making sure our costs were minimized, our services rendered effectively and our facilities maintained on schedule. The cash flow of the school and its predictability allowed us to structure the debt repayment plan. I could not discuss this topic without also thanking the entire community for supporting the proposed financial plans as well. I know what we ask and continue to ask from each of you. Thank you for continuing to respond.

As our financial responsibility to the community mandates and our audited financials illustrate again this year, St. Catherine’s Montessori continues to be a lean organization, directing most of our revenue to the classroom, where it impacts our children the most. But our work is not done in supporting our school’s long-term financial and strategic goals. We continue to identify further resources for maintaining the socioeconomic diversity and the financial stability of our community. We need to reach the goals of our current capital campaign to ensure our financial wellbeing as we improve and expand our campus. Through these successive developments and accomplishments, St. Catherine’s will thrive another 50 years.

I say this every year but it is important for me to say, I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors. My daughters attended St. Catherine’s from 1995 to 2008, and Pat and I will always be indebted to the community for the foundation they received here. I wish to thank you, the St. Catherine’s community, for what you do with your time, money and services to enable St. Catherine’s excellent program.

The Building and Grounds Committee exists to support the Board of Directors and the Head of School in the long-term planning and development of the St. Catherine’s facilities, infrastructure, and grounds. Comprised of the Head of School, the Facilities Manager, the Naturalist, a Board member, guides and parent volunteers, the scope of the Committee’s activities includes planning, developing, executing, reviewing, integrating, maintaining, supporting and organizing a wide variety of facilities and grounds matters.

The Committee’s most recent and ongoing focus has been: (1) defining a framework for a 10-year facilities plan; (2) assessment of our facility as it ages and addressing its current needs; and (3) bringing structured support and stewardship to our grounds, while also laying a path for our future through native habitat restoration, and expansion of our growing potential. The Committee meets monthly, although more frequent meetings occur when necessary.

“Preparing our environment for the students of St. Catherine’s Montessori is an exciting and exacting task. The facility and its community are a partnership and work best when mutually reinforced. The Buildings and Grounds Committee strives to create the best possible environment for that partnership.”

The spirit of St. Catherine’s Montessori resides in the work of the many families who have volunteered their time and talents for the greater good of the school. St. Catherine’s is more than a school … we are a community dedicated to creating an environment which encourages children to find their passion and to change the world. Our parent volunteers, from the beginning, worked tirelessly to transform the school. That spirit of community continues on today, especially as we anticipate the celebrations of the 50th year. We are grateful for the parent volunteers whose work supported the following fundraisers in 2015-2016, which collectively generated $69,327.90:

• Square 1 Art (Faculty Enrichment)

• Rebate Programs, Magazine Drive (PSO)

• Hoot for Hoops, Concession Sales, Los Tios and Skeeters Family Dining, Mini Directory (Athletic Booster Club)

• Book Fair, Scholastics (Library)

• Steps for Students (PSO and Athletic Booster Club)

• Sociables (General Operating Fund)

“Volunteering is important to me for the joy of meeting other parents, and also for my children to see me working in their school, be it in the library, gardens, or atrium, they see me there, they know where my heart is.”

Edith NapoleonPresident, PSO

“I enjoyed my time serving as Booster Club president during the 15-16 school year! It was with great joy that I was able to help continue the great work of many of the past presidents. My daughters, Sarah Lopez (AC) and Laura Lopez (UE), have benefited greatly from the wonderful opportunities that our sports programs have offered them. The success of our student-athletes is in large part due to our dedicated coaches, parents and teachers that constantly support and guide them through the many lessons that are learned through sports. Thank you all for your many hours of volunteering and cheering on our student-athletes.”

“Someone already paved the way for my child to be in this school…[Those parents] didn’t get to benefit from all the hard work they put in, but they did it any way, because they believed in the school as a great place for future families and children. To me, I’m paying it forward.”

–Mary Tysor, Current Parent

“We really have found a great sense of community at St. Catherine’s. We appreciate it and feel so blessed to be here every day.”

– Melissa Lopez, Current Parent

“I love St. Catherine’s because in all my time here, it always felt like a home to me. A home away from home.”

– Ian Mann, St. Catherine’s Alumnus ('14)

“I am so moved by how Isabella is respected and encouraged by her teachers, and not just her parents. This school is an extension of our family values. This makes her WANT to work harder. Thank you Saint Catherine's Montessori for your guidance and support for our children.

– Ana Treviño-Godfrey, Current Parent

and spiritual like that of the saint.”

- Maria Montessori

“Every once in a while, that special teacher comes along. One who reaches deep into the hearts of her students and abstracts the absolute best in them. For me, that special teacher was Pam Warren. She looked profoundly at Jake, focusing on his potential rather than the stumbling blocks, and reinforced his self worth and work ethic on an almost daily basis. Even in her retirement, she returned to the school and worked with him on a weekly basis because she was committed to him, his education, his progress and his self-esteem. Everything Pam did was for the good of another and never for her own glory or self-edification. Pam Warren was truly a gem of a teacher and I will forever be grateful to her for the time, love, and dedication she gave to Jake, to make a difference in his life.”

Cathy CrathCurrent Parent

We are grateful for Pam’s decades of service beginning with Sr. Shirley Owens † and Sr. Edna Ann Hebert at the Castle. We are blessed by Pam’s legacy and thankful for the love she shared with her students and with St. Catherine’s.
