Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: Conduct your affairs with humility (Sirach 3). Psalm: God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor (Psalm 68). Second Reading: You have approached the city of the living God (Hebrews 12). Gospel: Those who humble themselves will be exalted (Luke 14). Readings for the Week Monday: 1 Thes 4:13-18; Ps 96:1, 3-5, 11-13; Lk 4:16-30 Tuesday: 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday: Col 1:1-8; Ps 52:10-11; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday: Col 1:9-14; Ps 98:2-6; Lk 5:1-11 Friday: Col 1:15-20; Ps 100:1b-5; Lk 5:33-39 Saturday: Col 1:21-23; Ps 54:3-4, 6, 8; Lk 6:1-5 Sunday: Wis 9:13-18b; Ps 90:3-6, 12-17; Phlm 9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Monday: Labor Day Tuesday: St. Gregory the Great Friday: First Friday Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday Scripture Reflection Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsaken; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.” Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The fall Evening of Confession is held on the Wednesday closest to the Feast of the Exultation of the Cross. To view a one-minute Catholics Come Home video about confession, visit nolacatholic.org/evening-of-confession. Prime Time: September 11 and 23

All new volunteers or employees must attend our Safe Environment Workshop on Thursday, September 19, at 6:30 pm in the Barrett Complex. This training course must be renewed every three years. Please contact Paula Atchley at 835-9343 with questions or concerns. Thursday Morning Study on Acts: September 12

Thursday Morning Adult Bible Study will begin September 12, 10 am (Rosary at 9:40 am), in the Melancon Center, with ACTS: The Spread of the Kingdom! Acts is the story of how a few Christians empowered

by the Holy Spirit were chosen to bring Christ and the Good News to the ends of the earth. They faced secular forces, internal strife, and hostile crowds, and despite all of this, they brought the kingdom of God to a broken world and the love of God to the hearts of men. Please contact Denise Hoffman at [email protected] with any questions or to register.

Concert to Support Prison Ministry: September 26 St. Catherine is privileged to host a concert quartet featuring world-renowned composer and pianist Eric Genuis, on Thursday, September 26, at 6:30 pm, in the church. Eric will perform for SCS school children earlier in the day. His music can best be described as a unique fusion of classical and contemporary sounds that will embrace your

soul! For 90 minutes, you will witness the power of his music and his Christian message of hope that he brings to the marginalized in our society. Eric travels the world over to perform his “Concerts for Hope,” helping to bring beauty and dignity to the imprisoned. Prior to arriving at St. Catherine, Eric and his accompanists will have performed three concerts at Angola State Prison, including a performance for death row inmates. Join us for a delightful evening and personally experience Eric’s powerful message and extraordinary music. The concert is free, but good will donations are appreciated. Eric supports his ministry solely through the generosity of people who believe in his mission. Jesus calls us to live our lives in love and service, and by supporting Eric’s ministry, we are responding to His call. “I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:36). Please visit scschurch.com/concertforhope for more information. Grief Support Program to Begin: October 2 Are you struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one? To assist you in this difficult journey, St. Catherine is offering a Grief Support Group Beginning in October 2019, this ten-week program is designed to guide participants through the four stages of grief using The New Day Journal by Sister Mauryeen O’Brien as well as a variety of activities including prayer, small group discussions, scripture, selected readings and journaling. The group will meet beginning Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 7-8:30 pm in the Parish Office Conference Room. If you are interested in participating in this program or have any questions, please contact Patricia Lawson at [email protected] or 860-214-2681 or Becky Steppe at [email protected] or 289-6636. 2019—2020 Confirmation Registration Registration forms for the 2019-2020 Confirmation class can be found in the narthex of the church and on the parish website. The St. Catherine of Siena Confirmation program is for parishioners who are juniors or seniors in high school. If you have any questions, contact Paula Atchley, Director of Religious Education, at [email protected]. Children’s Liturgy of the Word Seeking Volunteers Children’s Liturgy of the Word is designed to give the word of the Lord to children in a fun and enjoyable way. It is open to all preschool to elementary age children attending the 11 am Mass. Children are escorted to the Melancon Center prior to the Liturgy of the Word where they will experience the Gospel with age appropriate tools. The children return to church after the homily. To continue this wonderful ministry we are in need of new volunteers to rotate two Sundays a month. If this ministry sounds like it is calling you, please contact Paula Atchley at [email protected] or 835-9343, so we may continue on the path to share the Catholic faith with our most precious little ones. Support for Prison Ministry Initiatives This fall our Parish will again support the Kairos Retreat at Dixon Correctional Institute. The retreat begins on Thursday, October 24, and concludes with the closing ceremony on Sunday, October 27, and we are asking that you help. It’s never too early to start! Donations of cookies can be accepted whenever it is convenient and you have them ready. And cards and letters—perhaps as a family, or in a group activity—writing a few each week; these really add up. They, too, can be picked up whenever you have them ready. The cookies and the cards and letters will be delivered to the retreat directors by October 22, so let’s get started! The St. Catherine prison ministry team prays that the current effort will demonstrate how the parish is “Centered on Christ, and Ablaze With Love!” and will surpass the extremely generous previous responses. For guidelines regarding cookie donations and any other questions, or to have donations picked up, please contact Jackie Appleton, at [email protected] or 858-5192.

Trained lay ministers who have been through the annulment process and clergy members who work with the Tribunal will share experiences pertinent to the question of the evening’s meeting to give participants an idea about how to write their story. The leaders also will pray quietly for participants while they are writing and be available to talk or to answer questions after participants have finished writing for the session. Preregistration is requested but participants can register at the door. There is a nominal cost of $25 to cover the cost of handouts and refreshments. There is no charge to the witnesses. For more information, attend the first meeting or call Cathy at 861-6243, 8:30 am-4:30 pm.

Pope Francis’ September Prayer Intention The Holy Father’s September prayer intention is as follows: The Protection of the Oceans: That politicians, scientists, and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans. Lord, Teach Me To Pray: September 23

Do you want to learn to pray or how to improve your prayer life? Lord, Teach Me to Pray is a three-part Ignatian prayer series. It was developed as an outreach program to bring the Holy Spirit into our daily lives in facilitated faith-sharing prayer communities, where the Lord, himself, teaches us to pray. Part 1: Praying Christian Virtues (12 weeks) focuses on the need to develop good religious

habits based on the spiritual teachings on Christian virtues, introduces the prayer of meditation and contemplation, Consciousness Examen, what to do for dryness in prayer, and how to listen. Part 2: My 19th Annotation (27 weeks) is the experience of praying the full Ignatian Exercises written by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Part 1 is a prerequisite. Part 3: Discernment and Gifts of the Spirit (14 weeks) focuses on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and St. Ignatius’ Rules of Discernment. Parts 1 and 2 are prerequisites. There will be three groups offered at St. Catherine of Siena this fall. Men’s Part 3 will be offered on Monday evenings at 7 pm beginning on September 16, in the Melancon Center St. John Paul II room. Women’s Part 2 will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 10 am beginning on September 17 in the Melancon Center St. Teresa of Calcutta room. Women’s Part 3 will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 10 am beginning on September 17 in the St. John Paul II room of the Melancon Center. Plans are to offer Part 1 for men and for women starting in January 2020. Go to lordteachmetopray.com or pick up a LTMTP flyer in the narthex of the church to see the full area schedule. Questions? Letter from the Archbishop Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: It is our archdiocesan tradition to offer the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, better known as confession, on a weekday evening near the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. I am pleased to inform you that many people in the Archdiocese of New Orleans have taken advantage of this opportunity. This year confessions will be available in all Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of New Orleans on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 5:00pm – 6:30pm. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to invite the healing Christ into your heart with his promise of mercy. Pope Francis has reminded us that God never tires of forgiving us. Perhaps we grow tired of asking for forgiveness. Pope Francis said, “Confession is the passage from misery to mercy…This is the heart of Confession: not the sins we declare, but the divine love we receive, of which we are ever in need. The confessional is a place of mercy.” Please consider having your family come to church together for Confession on Wednesday, September 11. Wishing you God’s blessings, I am Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
