The second reading is a concrete and practical application of this teaching. This happens to the lives of persecuted Christians who know that they will always have the Paraclete with them. Meditating on what happened after Jesus sent the Spirit from his Father upon the Church at Pentecost, the apostles went forth to preach the good news and win people to the Church. From a tiny band of dedicated disciples, the Church spread from Jerusa- lem throughout Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the earth. The Church today is truly catholic, a universal Church which embraces people of every nation and ethnic origin. The power of the Holy Spirit accomplished this marvel. Philip was one of the early dedicated preachers who went to Samaria. He baptized many converts. When the apostles, Peter and John, arrived they immediately were concerned that these neophytes should be fully incorporated into the Church. They prayed and imposed hands on them so that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For us the sacrament of confirmation completes baptism. Con- firmation gives us both the right and the duty to call upon the Holy Spirit so that we may be faithful, active Catholics. St. Peter (today’s second reading) warns that we must be ever ready to reply should anyone ask of us the reason for our hope: that means, we must give witness to our faith not only by words but by actions. People should know that we are Catholics by the way in which we live with such a veneration of Christ that Christ and his Church shape our values and our lives. Fr. Paul

The Promise of The Spirit” The main theme of today’s readings is the promise to send the Paraclete, the Spirit of truth. The Spirit’s coming will be solemnly celebrated in the feast of Pentecost. Beside the promise, today’s gospel spells out how to prepare to receive the Spirit. From a tiny band of dedicated disciples, the Church spread from Jerusa-lem throughout Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the earth. Con-firmation gives us both the right and the duty to call upon the Holy Spirit so that we may be faithful, active Catholics. Fr. Paul
