‘’Give to God What Is God’s’’ Taxes in Jesus’ time were more of a ‘’tribute’’ , a pay-ment to the conqueror on the part of the conquered. The money went to Rome to be used by Romans as they wished. There were no social services, no accountability. The Roman bureaucracy spent the money where it wished. Nationalistic Jews saw the payment of these taxes as an offence to Israel. On the other hand, the Ro-mans, their supporters or those who simply feared their power saw refusal to pay as inciting rebellion. So when Jesus was asked by the Pharisees and the Herodians about the lawfulness of paying the census tax to the Ro-man emperor, he was actually being led into a trap. Ei-ther yes or no would make him an enemy of Rome or of his oppressed people. Jesus’ sharp response, ‘’Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God’’ has the tone of righteous indignation. He knows that the Pharisees ask him with malicious intent. They first praise him as a truthful man only to lay a trap for him. The issue is not really the payment of taxes but their hypocrisy. They use religion to destroy Jesus. Deep human relationship, whether in friendship, mar-riage, or any form of commitment, is sustained by good-will and honesty. People who are transparent are true to their words; they do not praise others for their own ad-vantage. People may not always agree with them but will always trust them. A hypocrite does not give to God what belongs to God, for God wants a sincere heart. Only an upright heart, only he who does not regard a person’s status, pleases God. Fr. Paul

Understanding Marriage Nullity~Saturday, October 28th from 9 am to 12 noon at St. Paul Catholic Church,
1410 Pine St., Silverton. The Archdiocesan Tribunal Office will
offer this presentation on questions and topics surrounding petition
for nullity. All parishes in the vicariate and surrounding area are

A $500 grant is available to St. Mary’s Parishioners who send their chil-dren to a Catholic High School. To obtain the grant, please contact the
parish office in person during regular business hours. **Each family must meet with Fr. Paul **Each Family must be registered at St. Mary’s Shaw **Each family will attend Sunday & Holy day liturgies in the parish. **Each family must use their collection envelopes weekly or monthly to support the parish **Both students & parents must be involved in the parish community ministries. The grant will be paid out in November, to credit the students account.
Adult Faith Formation October 24th, at 7pm at St. Boniface hall. Come and learn about the history and content of the Nicene Creed, which we say every Sunday. The Creed summarizes the dogmas we believe in and is a symbol of our Christian faith. We will go in depth about key phrases used in the Creed. The Creed also provides a basis for a deeper spiritual life and personal relationship with Christ. Dennis Rose from St. Mary’s will lead the discussion.

This non-denominational study will be a 7 week program every Tuesday, ending December 5th. There is no cost, and we offer a free warm breakfast. Workbooks are $15. This excellent video series offers a vision for manhood as modelled by Jesus in his 33 years on earth, and helps men in our journey to reject passivity, accept responsibility, lead courageously, and seek God’s reward, using Christ’s example of “Die to Live.” Come join us, and bring a friend.
