Deacon Steve Tabor Phone: 503.769.8089
‘’True Love’’ A teenage boy was shooting some baskets in the driveway on his home when he lost one of he contact lenses. He looked for it but could not find it. He went into the house and said, ‘’Dad, I lost one of my contacts and I can’t find it.’’ His father got up from reading his paper, went outside, and in a few moments returned with the lens. The boy was amazed. ‘’How did you find it?’’ he asked. His father replied, ‘’You were looking for a piece of plas-tic. I was looking for $150.’’ When we do not have the right sense of values, we can fail to find the important realities of life. That is why the people in the Gospel today rejected Jesus. They could not accept a home town boy as their Messiah. They missed out on what was really important. To them Jesus was no more than a piece of plastic. Something like that was going on in Cor-inth when Paul wrote his letter to them. They had become enam-ored of the charismatic gifts. Some could speak in tongues, others could interpret tongues, some had the gift of healing, and others could prophesy. These gifts were good in the themselves, but the Corinthians were failing to value the greatest gift of all, the gift of love. That is why Paul said to them, ‘’I will show the way that surpasses all others.’’ That way is the way of love. But with St. Paul love was not abstract or merely theoretical. He was not thinking of a honeymoon and romantic love. For him love was practical, down to earth, a day-in and a day-out way of dealing with each other. Love is kind, patient, not jealous and so forth. Finally love never fails. All real love, and not just a mere, fantasy love, is for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in heath. For, we can begin eternity now by praying for and by putting into practice a Christ-like love for each other.
