ST. NICHOLAS

PARISH BREAKFAST

Saturday, December 14

9:00 AM

EVERYONE is invited to celebrate the Christmas season at our Annual St. Nicholas Parish Breakfast!

Come and enjoy delicious pancakes, sausage, snowman soup (hot cocoa), and coffee for the adults.

We will have a visit from St. Nicholas!

Also during the breakfast, we invite each new family/single or those who missed it in previous years, to pick up a “Chrismon” to take home and decorate. A Chrismon is a Christmas decoration that uses Christian symbols to represent our Lord Jesus Christ. We ask that you return it to the church no later than Sunday, Dec. 22. They will adorn our parish family Christmas trees.

In the tradition of St. Nicholas of showing love and kindness by caring for others and God’s creatures, we will be accepting do-nations for Parish Outreach Pantry and Effingham Humane Society.

Sunday of Advent “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Matthew 24:42 People who have had health issues or near-death ex-periences generally have a greater appreciation for each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usual-ly take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But when you start to look at each day as a gift, you realize all the little miracles that happen daily and grow in gratitude for all that we have been given. You begin to see God’s active presence in your life.

St. Boniface Brick Program

St. Boniface is once again selling personalized bricks that

will be installed in St. Boniface’s patio. Take a look at

our patio that is located on the side of the Hall across

from the children’s playground.

What a wonderful and lasting way to honor or memorial-

ize a loved one or to commemorate a special event such

as a birth, baptism, first communion, confirmation, grad-

uation or wedding!!

All proceeds from the Brick Campaign will go toward the

building fund for our new Church.

We would like to honor all of our Gartland Award win-

ners with a brick. If you would like to contribute some-

thing toward this project, please use a blank envelope to

submit your donation.

The Brick Campaign order period will end December 22,

2019. Forms can be found in the foyer by the white box.

Barren Tree CCW will have the Barren Tree set up in St. Boniface Hall at the beginning of Advent, Saturday, November 30, 2019. There will be 292 tags for children, ages in-fant through 10 years, and the maximum amount for these gifts should be $8.00. These gifts will go to the needy in our community. There will be 7 tags for the Treutlen House boys, ages 13 through 17. These gifts should be $15.00. The counselor at Treutlen House suggests WalMart gift cards. There will be 6 tags for the Family Promise chil-dren. The suggested gift is a $15.00 WalMart gift card. Please take a tag and return your wrapped or bagged gift with the tag by Sunday, December 15, 2019. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing with those less fortunate.

Council of Catholic Women The CCW will hold it’s next meeting on Dec. 4, at 7 pm. All ladies of the parish are welcome! Please bring finger foods to share. CCW is also hosting a luncheon and reception on Saturday, Dec. 7, before and after the 5 pm Mass for Confirmation. Please come to the meet-ing to learn more and if you are willing to help. Our monthly Mass will be on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the 11 am Mass. We will also be working on Barren tree and will need help sorting the gifts on that day.

HOPEFUL EXPECTATION Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent—a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day. Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salva-tion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Children’s Christmas Pageant Please sign your children up for the annual Christmas Eve Mass Children's Pageant. We are looking for chil-dren ages Pre-K (3) - 5th grade to perform in the pag-eant as well as Middle School aged children to narrate. Practices for the pageant will be held Tuesday, Decem-ber 17 at 7pm and Sunday December 22nd following the 11 o'clock mass. The pageant will be performed dur-ing the 5pm Christmas Eve mass.
