When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our posses-sions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples. Jubilee Year of Mercy September 4, 2016 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time “If anyone comes to me without hating . . . father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Ju-bilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confront-ing life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even rela-tionships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life ex-ample. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Phile-mon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a coun-ter-cultural, world-shattering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy chal-lenge me to “hate”—meaning reform, redo, even ut-terly revamp—so I can give everyone, no conditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Mother Teresa Canonization September 4, 2016
On October 19, 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who died in 1997. The process leading up to the beatification has been the shortest in mod-ern history. In early 1999—less than two
years after Mother Teresa's death—Pope John Paul waived the normal five-year waiting period and allowed the imme-diate opening of her canonization cause. In 2002, the Holy Father recognized the healing of an Indian woman as the miracle needed to beatify Mother Teresa of Calcutta. That healing occurred on the first anniversary of Mother Tere-sa's death. It involved a non-Christian woman in India who had a huge abdominal tumor and woke up to find the tu-mor gone. Members of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order Mother Teresa founded, prayed for their founder's intervention to help the sick woman. "Her life of loving service to the poor has inspired many to follow the same path. Her witness and message are cherished by those of every religion as a sign that 'God still loves the world today,'" members of the Missionaries of Charity said in a statement after Mother Teresa's beatification was an-nounced. Since her death, they said, "people have sought her help and have experienced God's love for them through her prayers. Every day, pilgrims from India and around the world come to pray at her tomb, and many more follow her example of humble service of love to the most needy, beginning in their own families." In 2001, on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, officials closed the diocesan in-quiry into Mother Teresa's sanctity. The yearlong gather-ing of testimony from those who knew Mother Teresa was the first major step in a typically long process. A year ear-lier, at an August 26, 2000, celebration in Calcut-ta marking Mother Teresa's birth anniversary, Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim admirers joined in common prayers for her speedy canonization.
