TO OUR PARISHIONERS

MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE Praying as We Ought There are many examples in scriptures about people trying to figure out what God’s plan is for their life. It should really not come as a surprise that once we acknowledge that God is real that we want to try and figure out what God wants for us. This even transcends into the secular world. In the early 90’s there was an obscure comedian by the name of Emo Philips. He did a bit about how he believed in the power of prayer and that when he was a little boy, he prayed every day for a new bicycle. After praying for many days without any result, he realized that God didn’t work that way, so instead he stole a bike and asked for forgiveness!

All kidding aside, there are times when our prayer life could use some help. Most people experience a “dryness” in their prayer life ever wondering if God is even listening. Once this dryness sets in, it becomes increasingly hard-er to know how to pray and that can lead to abandoning prayer altogether. What can we do when we find our-selves wandering around in the forest of prayer? The second reading today provides us with some guidance when we feel lost or abandoned.

Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

In God’s grand design, the Holy Spirit is available to us no matter where we are at in our prayer life. If we find ourselves stuck in prayer or not even knowing how to pray at all, we can simply call on the Holy Spirit to intercede for us. I know that this has become an important piece in my prayer life and every day I conclude my prayers by asking the Holy Spirit to pray for me for the things that are beyond my knowing. I rest knowing that the Holy Spirit works all things for the glory of God! So if you find yourself needing a jump start to your prayer life…call on the Holy Spirit and see what a difference it can make in your life!

Deacon Mike…...P.S. Please don’t steal a bike.

We want to let you know that our Parish has a Prayer Wall posted on the web page. This Prayer Wall is not to just submit a prayer request, it is also where you can go and pray for the prayer requests submitted. Let us all become prayer warriors and prayer for each other. This is a time when we can come together as one and be united in prayer. To access our Parish Prayer Wall, go the following web page www.stbernardappleton.org and click on the Prayer Wall image.

Wearing a Mask at Mass is not about you; it’s about the other person!

St. Bernard is celebrating its 6th weekend of public Masses! We would like to acknowledge all of our parishioners who have followed the safety protocols for each weekend, especially the wearing of masks. We are so grateful to everyone who puts the needs of others above their own personal preferences when they enter our building. While wearing a mask may not be very comfortable, it represents a true, living example of Christian charity in our current situation. Wearing a mask for a weekend Mass demonstrates respect and love for fellow parishioners, just as Jesus encourages us to do when he says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt. 22:39). The single act of wearing a mask communicates to

other people that they are valued and loved, something that is desperately needed in this time of social isolation and division. Consequently, St. Bernard will continue to strongly promote wearing a mask at Mass, always keeping in mind our care of each other.

MASS INTENTIONS WEEKLY READINGS

ST. BERNARD PARISH STAFF FORMED Well, let’s single out the men this week. Sometimes it’s nice to have something that directs attention to just men or just women; just like some of the articles have focused on children or families.

There’s an incredible study found in FORMED, called “Into The Breach.” It is comprised of a ground-breaking 12 Episodes/Video series, each focusing on what it means to be a Catholic man in today’s world. This series is presented by the Knights of Columbus and are inspired by Bishop Thomas J Olmsted’s exhortation to Catholic men. “Into The Breach” tells men that God has made them for greatness and challenges them to achieve it.

This is focused on the foundation that God gives, along with virtues. These episodes feature well known Catholic speakers like Scott Hahn, Father Mike Schmitz, Jason Evert and many others. In each episode there is a personal story of how a man has experienced the topic at hand. They cover topics of Masculinity; Brotherhood; Leadership; Fatherhood; Family; Prayer, Suffering..to name a few. These can be used for personal enrichment or for group discussion.

Maybe someone from our Parish feels the desire to start a ZOOM study for Men.
