God we pray for more men to courageously answer the call to serve you in our Diocese of Altoona - Johnstown as a priest. We ask that you bless our semi-narians. May they persevere and serve in the Diocese as good and faithful priests, but may they do so in accord with your holy will, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Helping Hands Annual Coat Collection The weekend of October 10th and 11th, our Helping Hands Organization will be collecting coats which will be given to Catholic Charities for distribution before the cold weather begins. They can be taken to the St. JP II Building on your way to Mass that weekend. We will be collecting slightly used coats for men, women and children (including snowsuits.) Please be sure they are clean and in wearable condition. Thank you for participating in this important program.

Baptism at Mass on Monthly Baptism Sundays The celebration of the sacrament of Baptism is much more than a private ceremony for your child and for you, your family and friends. Baptism is a sacrament of Christ and of His Church and through this sacrament your child is brought into the royal family of God as His own adopted son or daughter. Through the beauty of this sacrament, the Risen Christ unites your child to him-self in a special way making your child a member of Christ’s Body, the Church. Since the sacrament of Bap-tism affects the entire Church, it is a special day for both your family and for the family of the Church. The entire parish community should be involved as much possible. Baptism is the beginning of a journey; it is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation and looks forward to being completed through receiving First Communion and Confirmation. Baptism leads to the Mass, which is why the Ceremony of Baptism finishes at the altar. Eve-ry Baptism involves the universal Church. Therefore, the best time for Baptism is in the presence of the parish community gathered for worship at Sunday Mass. If you are interested, families will have the opportunity to celebrate their child’s Baptism at the 11:30 am Mass on the first Sunday of the month. If you prefer, however, not to have your child’s Bap-tism during Mass, arrangements can be made for the Baptism to be celebrated after the 11:30 Mass most Sundays.

Scrip Sales Please note that our Scrip sales will be every Monday and Thursday morning from 8:15 to 9:30 am in our St. JP II / Room # 1. You can drop your prepaid order forms in the collection basket at any weekend Mass. You will be called when your scrip is ready for pick up. Thank you for participating in our program.

OUR PARISH CELEBRATES FORTY HOURS

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (September 27th, 28th, 29th), our Parish will celebrate the beautiful Eucharistic devotion of Forty Hours.

The Forty Hours Devotion is a special forty-hour period of prayer made before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition. Of course, the focus of this devotion is on the Holy Eucharist. As Catholics, the words of our Lord burn in our hearts:

"I myself am the living bread come down from Heaven. If anyone eats this bread, He shall live forever; the bread I will give is my flesh for the life of the world" (John 6:51).

The number forty has always signified a sacred period of time: the rains during the time of Noah lasted 40 days and nights; the Jews wandered through the desert for 40 years, our Lord fasted and prayed for 40 days before beginning His public ministry. The 40 Hours Devotion remembers that traditional "forty-hour period" from our Lord's burial until the resurrection.

This year it is our hope to open our devotions with an outdoor procession immediately following the 11:30 Mass. This solemn procession would circle the outside of the church, stopping at three altars for prayer and benediction. We would then return to the church where the Blessed Sacrament will be placed for adoration. If the weather is inclement the outdoor procession would be moved indoors.

We are looking for three families or individuals who will take responsibility for setting up the three out-door altars for the opening procession. The table, candles and kneeling pad are provided by the church. Families need to provide a white tablecloth, flowers or other decorations, and manpower to set up the altars prior to (or during) the 11:30 Mass. Please contact Joe Gaunt (241-1923) if you are interested in helping with this important work.

The Forty Hours Devotion provides an opportunity for the spiritual growth of each person and the parish as a whole. In a world where temptation and evil abound, where devotion to the Mass and our Lord in the Holy Eucharist have declined, where the practice of penance and confession have been forgotten, we need the Forty Hours Devotion more than ever.

In order to assure that adorers are always present before the Blessed Sacrament, we suggest that the following parish organizations take responsibility for the hours assigned below on Sunday, September 27th

1:00 – 2:00 Knights of Columbus, Good News Prayer Group 2:00 – 3:00 Men’s Group, St. Benedict Oblates, Adult Bible Study 3:00 – 4:00 Cantors, Finance Council, Parish Council, Pro-Life 4:00 – 5:00 A&E Committee, Compassionate Friends, Helping Hands, Ushers 5:00 – 6:00 Cursillo, Lectors, Youth Group, Parish School teachers and staff 6:00 – 7:00 Eucharistic Ministers, Religious Education teachers, Stephen Ministers

Of course, you are also welcome to come at whatever time is convenient to you.

Evening devotions begin at 7:00 pm.
