ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH THE BASILIAN DECEMBER 2017 We just need a little love In the 1965 classic A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charlie Brown picks a small, weak and flimsy-looking Christmas tree for the Christmas play he and his friends are putting together. When he goes to put an ornament on it, it falls. Charlie Brown is devastated. However, his friend Linus says the following: “I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all really—maybe it just needs a little love.” At that point, Charlie Brown’s friends rush to help decorate that vulnerable tree and it is transformed and becomes beautiful, strong and bright. I believe the aforementioned scene captures an essential theme of the great feastday of Christmas: weak, broken humanity is refashioned and made spiritually beautiful, strong and bright through the abundant love of God, by God becoming a human being, a reality that Orthodox Christians refer to as the Incarnation. Charlie Brown did not reject this little, weak tree when he first saw it. God also, did not reject His weak, broken and sinful creation. Instead, the eternal Logos came down from heaven to dwell among us and when He did, He did not shun us. Many “righteous” people in the Gospels looked at spiritually weak, sinful and broken people such as the man born blind, the harlot, the tax collector, and the woman caught in adultery and wanted nothing to do with them. Our Lord on the other hand showed mercy, compassion and love to these individuals, establishing the fertile soil for their spiritual rebirth. I believe many people are spiritually broken and weak because they do not have the love of God in their lives. What does it mean to be spiritually broken and weak? It can mean to be confused, lost, empty, selfish or in despair. To be spiritually beautiful, strong and bright means to be full of genuine hope, peace, joy and love. All people need the love of God to be to be spiritually beautiful, strong and bright. The love of God is found in the Church, and who is the Church? We are, both clergy and laity! Every baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christian constitute together the Church of Christ. Just like that little tree was transformed through the love of Charlie Brown’s friends, we too, as the Church, transform the spiritually broken and weak we encounter by giving them the love of Christ. We, as the Church, give the love of Christ, by not giving up on people because of their spiritual weakness and brokenness. We as the Church must see in others what others may not see in themselves: their goodness, value, worth and that they are loveable. We, as the Church, give the love of Christ by treating all people with kindness, respect, care, concern, mercy, and compassion. The tragedy is that it is possible that this love of Christ may not be experienced in a parish. We must make sure that we do our part so that anyone who attends our services, ministries and functions, can tell others that they were loved, welcomed, cherished and embraced. Above all, I hope we ourselves--spiritually broken and weak though we might be--have experienced transformation, being made spiritually beautiful, strong and bright through the love of God found in the Church. It is this love of Christ, and only this love, that can fulfill us and restore us. May you and your loved ones experience the transformative love of Christ in His Church, this Christmas, now and always. With love in the Incarnate Lord, Fr. Panagiotis

We just need a little love

In the 1965 classic A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charlie Brown picks a small, weak and flimsy-looking Christmas tree for the Christmas play he and his friends are putting together.

With love in the Incarnate Lord,

Fr. Panagiotis

THE BASILIAN DECEMBER 2017

At our Fall Parish Assembly held on Sunday, Nov. 12th following the Divine Liturgy, the parishioners in good standing who were in attendance unanimously approved the inclusion in the 2018 budget of a fully-funded 2nd Ministry Leader position with a youth focus. The opportunity of having a 2nd Ministry Leader was made possible by an anonymous donor who has offered to fully fund such a position for three years. The motion that the Assembly passed gives the Parish Council the flexibility ability to choose from one of the following three positions: 1) a Youth Director; 2) a Lay Assistant; or 3) a 2nd clergyman (Priest/Deacon). As was mentioned at the Assembly, a condition of this offer was that any prospective candidate will need to have an Orthodox Theological degree to be considered. Following the Assembly’s approval, the Parish Council has approved a Staffing Vision Team to assist Fr. Pete in his search for the best candidate by determining whichof the three positions best suits the parish and what the position will do. The members of this team are: Teri Blum (Team Leader), George Kaplanis, Maria Karapanos, Dr. Raymond Rishwain, and Tim Wiesner. The Parish Council, per the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Regulations, will ultimately hire any candidate.

The possibility of having a 2nd Ministry Leader is a truly wonderful and exciting opportunity for our parish. With such a position, we will be able to offer more effectively and regularly the transformative and saving love of Christ and His Church to our youth and potentially to other parishioners, prospective parishioners and seekers. We thank our generous donor for this unbelievably incredible offer. Let us all now pray to our Lord that He will help us find the best possible candidate for St. Basil’s. Any further developments and updates regarding this position will be conveyed via the Basilian and St. Basil’s e-mail list.

JOURNEY TO ORTHOdoxy

How do you put into words the joy of making new friends in Christ?

Eight weeks, sixteen Journey to Fullness videos, sharing thoughts, convictions and cookies -- priceless! This series was presented after the Greek Festival as a direct response from people attending the expanded Church Tours. Our Orthodox worship is like no other, and people sense that when they enter the church and learn about this faith that is not ancient, but timeless. The attendance was a combination of inquirers, catechumens, and parishioners.

I’d like to thank Rick Fogle for co-leading the series and Traci Sittig for her support.

ANGEL BABIES

ANGEL BABIES WORK DAY: CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS PROJECT

Our Angel Babies Ministry started the new liturgical year with the annual Christmas Stocking project for the Family Maternity Center at San Joaquin General Hospital. Last year we made 100 stockings. This year, we cut red and white fabric for 150 stockings. During the month of December, the nurses at the Family Maternity Center wrapeach new-born baby in a stocking for a photo opp! The photo and stocking are gifted to the family as a keepsake. During our Angel Baby Work Day in November, the volunteers adorned the stockings with holly and ivy, along with a personalized tag. I would like to extend gratitude to our hard-working volunteers for giving their time and talent to this outreach project: Joanne Panagopoulos, Deana Mariani, Dessie Ksidakis, Bobbe Xenos, Mary Carroll, RoseMary Siliverdis and Joan Cooper (new volunteer). We had a special visit from Anastasia Legatos and her daughter, Lexi Jacobs who are related to Litsa Mandarakis. Anastasia and Lexi met Dessie and Bobbe at the Metropolis Kids n Cancer Camp this past summer —They surprised them with a visit to Angel Babies. Anastasia “jumped right in” and began sewing stockings together! They promised to visit again! The Christmas Stocking project is a worthy community outreach. If you have been searching for a service project, especially during the Christmas season, please stop by the church fellowship hall Tuesday, December 19th, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Angel Babies invites the participation of both men and women!

women’s wellness

The St. Katherine Women’s Wellness has assembled in the Fireside Room the first Tuesday of each month, as we read God’s Path To Sanity, Lessons From Ancient Holy Counselors On How To Have A Sound Mind by Dee Pennock. The book is woven with wisdom from the Fathers and Holy Counselors of the Church to acquaint us with the great physicians of the soul. One of the key factors highlighted by the author is to discern when to seek medical advice and medication from a doctor and when to seek a physician of the soul, “as in the treatment of prolonged or recurring depression” or other spiritual disorders that burden us and hold us back from experiencing the joy of Christ in ourselves and our relationships. Scripture teaches us that we are composed of body, mind and soul (I Thess. 5: 23). With God as the source of healing, medical treatment may accompany spiritual treatment. Join us in meeting the first Tuesday of each month for inspiring reading and great fellowship. In November we surprised Gayle with a surprise birthday celebration! Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 12:00 pm to 1:30pm in the Fireside Room.

Newcomers are welcome!

“Do not grow weary in good works”

I heard the above quote this morning on Ancient Faith, while listening to The Daily Bread podcasts. It is particularly appropriate today, the day after Thanksgiving, with all it entails. Though I did not have to prepare the meal, I did have a long drive to join family.

In the parish, this is a very busy time of year. We have Trunk or Treat; the Thanksgiving Luncheon; parish assembly; a Philoptochos general meeting; and now, Thanksgiving behind us. Still to come are the Paint Party, Philoptochos Christmas luncheon, Light the Path and the Parish Christmas party. In between, we
